North America » United States » Maine » Eastport August 21st 2012

As I moved further north and east from Bar Harbor ME to the Seaview Motel, Cabins & Campground in Eastport ME on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, the landscape became markedly more remote and less affected by the footprint of mankind. There were pockets of civilization, but the duration and frequency of stretches of uninterrupted, tree-lined highway increased. The villages and towns still heralded an occasional art or antique store as a beacon to passersby; but hardware stores, pharmacies, banks and grocers emerged from the hidden lairs they occupied in Bar Harbor to become the norm along US 1. The trip from Boston or New York City became less and less attractive for weekenders the further I drove. Eastport actually is quite a little diamond in the rough. The historic city core boasts of 29 buildings on ... read more

I suppose many would contend that a visit to Maine is incomplete without a visit to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor. I know that was my sentiment when planning this journey. I had been exposed to so many glowing reports by so many people from such diverse backgrounds that had visited from so many different locales. All these people from hither and yon cannot all be wrong. Have you ever set your expectations far above the reality of the situation? I try to avoid prejudging good or bad but have fallen victim to that curse in the case of Acadia. My expectations were much greater than the park could deliver. I must say the weather did not cooperate either. On my drive from Appleton ME on Tuesday August 7, 2012, I passed the Fort Knox ... read more

When I initially planned my advance north along the Maine coastline, the distance between stops made the Camden/Rockland area a logical stopover point. I learned that my cousin’s wife grew up in nearby Union ME and that they usually visited sometime during July and/or August. I penciled in my dates but, when I learned Rockland would be hosting “The 65th Maine Lobster Festival” during my “tentative” visit, the dates became etched in ink! It turned out the arrival of a new grandchild in Alabama altered their Maine visitation plans for 2012, but who needs to have your cousin watching as a seafarin’ neophyte learns how to disassemble a whole lobster anyway! It also turned out that the campground I selected was very close to Union and was one they knew well. The spot I was given ... read more

North America » United States » Maine » Kennebunk July 31st 2012

I selected Biddeford as a home port for my first stop in Maine largely because of its proximity to the storied Maine coastline, its location between Portsmouth NH and Portland ME and its nearness to a high-profile neighbor - Kennebunkport. Tuesday, July 24, 2012 was thickly overcast from the outset, but rain was held in check until I was about two miles from the RV park. A light rain was a mere inconvenience during set-up. Shamrock RV Park appears to have been a “three-room” house that has experienced multiple additions as the “family” grew. I was directly across from a picturesque, peaceful pond that can be viewed from very few RV windows because, it appears, there was no master plan way back when. Be that as it may, I wasn’t there to enjoy the park facility ... read more

Exeter NH is what I oftentimes have imagined when I visualized a small New England city – colonial homes close enough to the tree-lined street to clutch one side of the sidewalk, classic churches with steeples that command at least a glance against a brilliant blue sky, ornate public buildings that taunt us in melody, “If you knew what I know,” and streets that radiate from the core like spokes on the wheel of a horse-drawn carriage. My drive from Salem MA to The Green Gate Campground in Exeter NH on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 was uneventful, and I was pleased to find that I had only a short 1-1/2 mile drive from the campground to town. Several area towns hosted attractions which made my “to do” list, but my main reason for selecting Exeter as ... read more

In the last year and a half, I have heard stories from hades offered by those who have driven in Boston without being in tow of a trailer. My common sense prevailed, and I programmed the GPS for my journey from Plymouth to Salem via the longer route and I-95 around Boston instead of the shorter I-93 route through downtown Boston. I arrived in Salem without any problems, but the trip from the freeway to the municipal campground at Winters Island Park was a real challenge. As in most older cities, the streets (and lanes if there are such things) are very narrow, the telephone poles are immediately adjacent to the curb, the various roadway hazards (potholes, manholes, etc.) catapult the truck like a cannon ball and almost every corner where I had to turn came ... read more

My relocation from Sandwich MA to Plymouth MA on June 19, 2012 held a brand new curve ball. I knew the trip would be one of the shortest campground to campground journeys of my “professional tourist” career, but was dumbfounded when MapQuest calculated the route from Peters Pond RV Resort (Sandwich) to Indianhead Resort (Plymouth) at only 12.39 miles. Scratching my head in bewilderment, MapQuest rescued me from the threshold of a rubber room. To reach downtown Plymouth from Indianhead Resort, I would have to travel an additional 13.94 miles! It literally took longer on each end of the trip to make ready my travel trailer than it did to traverse the route. After set-up, my Pilgrim (the brand of my travel trailer) felt right at home in Plymouth. Wednesday found me venturing back toward the ... read more

I knew my attractions list on Inner Cape Cod was short when I set out for the Peters Pond RV Resort in Sandwich MA on Tuesday, June 12, 2012. I couldn’t have planned a short week any better. The laundry was demanding attention, and the truck needed an oil change. By the time the week drew near, I learned the weatherman was not going to be a tourist’s best friend either. Perfect! The locals need some rain sometime, and it might as well be while I have non-tourist activities to attend to. The first of my two tourism days was Friday. I set out for the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center. The idea of constructing such a canal was first considered by Miles Standish of the Plymouth Colony in 1623. Between the first notion of a ... read more

The weather was great on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, and the drive from Newport RI to Wellfleet MA was pleasant and uneventful. I had chosen Wellfleet as my base of Outer Cape Cod operations because of its central location. Many of the attractions I wanted to visit were in Provincetown, out at the tip of the Cape Cod peninsula; but some were located closer to the mainland from Wellfleet. If for no other reason than geography, Wellfleet was a good choice; and Maurice's Campground was a good choice for the solitude after a busy day. In spite of the inaccessibility of some of the attractions during the “off season,” one advantage of visiting then is the serenity of the sparsely populated campgrounds at the end of a busy day. Wednesday morning I headed for Province Lands ... read more

North America » United States June 5th 2012

Since my drive from Old Mystic CT to Newport RI was only about 60 miles (or 90 minutes), I spent a leisurely morning Tuesday, May 22, 2012 preparing for departure. Avoiding rush hour traffic and school bus pick-ups are good reasons to plan a late departure when the destination is nearby – say nothing of getting to a campground before the reserved spot is vacated. Tuesday began with a drizzle hard enough to make the streets wet and kick up spray sufficient to have the wipers on intermittent. The journey was quite pleasant in spite of the weather until I arrived at the Claiborne Pell Bridge, commonly known as the Newport Bridge, where I paid the $8.00 toll and proceeded across the most deteriorated surface I have encountered on any form of FREE divided highway in ... read more
