Wednesday, July 24, 2013 found me heading to an IHOP in Houma LA to have a “see you soon” breakfast with several friends. I had selected the IHOP because of its proximity to a Home Depot and the accompanying large parking lot that would accommodate my truck with the Pilgrim in tow. Today was a great day for a late start because my next destination was Baton Rouge LA – a mere 85 mile drive. After having stayed at half a dozen RV parks in Chapter 2013 of “The Great Adventure,” I am getting back into the routine of campsite set-up and teardown. It’s amazing how rusty the mind can get after seven months of dormancy. After breakfast, I set out for Baton Rouge. The trip to the Farr Park RV Campground was uneventful. Actually, the ... read more

Most who know me well know how I came to be adopted by an extended family in the Houma LA area. I have stopped to visit a few times since we “found each other” in 2005 but have never visited with tourism as part of my agenda. This time, I vowed, would be different. As I prepared to depart Biloxi MS on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, I noticed a low tire on the left side of the Pilgrim. The owner of Woodland Farm RV Campground in Saucier MS offered me the use of his air compressor. I knew the tires were due for replacement soon but hoped they would last a few more miles. I was able to keep an eye on the questionable tire in my mirror and saw the “slow” leak wasn’t quite as ... read more

My departure from Andalusia AL on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 was uneventful. My GPS guided me over a few miles of state and county roads before I made my way onto westbound US 84/AL 12 towards Evergreen AL. There I caught I-65 to Mobile AL and I-10 to Biloxi MS where I exited onto MS 67 and some county roads to the Woodland Farm RV Campground south of Saucier MS. The owner had properly cautioned me over the phone that the location is about 20 minutes from the downtown Biloxi casinos; however, I relished the calm at the end of the day. This small park is rural and quiet and (from all appearances) is a retirement hobby and social outlet for the very accommodating owner. Thursday was properly forecast for rain for most of the day, ... read more

With my annual “tune-up” and my (seemingly semi-annual) kidney stone removal completed, I departed Sanford FL for parts north. It’s not that I dislike Florida summers – they would be fine were it not for the humidity. Actually, with the news I have heard from the West, Midwest and Northeast; I picked a pretty good year to be held in limbo in Florida anticipating a strike from the chrome cobra! Actually, I am told by the natives, this has been the most typical summer in many years – afternoon showers to add to the “humidity half” of the temperature/humidity index. Alas, all is well as long as the air conditioner works! The forecast was not-so-good for the next several days when I set out for Big Oak RV Park in Tallahassee FL on Friday, June 28, ... read more

When I began planning my “Off to New England in 2012” trip, I knew Mother Nature would be at the epicenter of two activities near the top of my priority list. I was abruptly reminded just how fickle she can be when the cherry blossoms had already disappeared by the time I arrived in Washington DC for the 100th Cherry Blossom Festival. At least the Festival Parade had a firm date – fall foliage does not! I had built a considerable amount of flexibility into my leaf-peeping schedule to assure I still would be in New England/Upstate New York for the pinnacle of the annual display and had told my aunt, who resides in White Mills KY, to expect me during the week of October 14, 2012. As the final days of my 2012 journey unfolded, ... read more

Tuesday, September 25, 2012 dawned another in a string of Chamber of Commerce days in Vermont. Irene, my GPS, led me south on VT 100 to Warren VT where I turned west on VT 17. A long, steady climb brought me to The Appalachian Gap. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was enlisted by the State of Vermont in 1933 to build the easternmost portion the McCullough Turnpike which initially connected VT 100 to the Mad River Glen Ski Area. When completed through the Appalachian Gap (or App Gap) in 1958, the route provided an east/west connection between the Champlain and Mad River Valleys. The spacious parking area at the gap provided plenty of room for my rig and gave me an opportunity to sightsee without the distraction of a steering wheel! The remainder of my trip ... read more

My third good weather day in northern New Hampshire was the day of my departure. The bright side of that coin is that I didn’t have to pull the Pilgrim on rain-slickened roadways. Lancaster NH is located on the shores of the Connecticut River so Vermont is only a bridge away. The short drive to Duxbury Country Store & Campground in Duxbury VT on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 was uneventful although I couldn’t help but think of the events that transpired eleven years earlier and of the monument I had seen in Eastport ME about a month ago. It was dedicated to Angel Juarbe, Jr., the New York City firefighter who won a reality show grand prize and lost his life in the World Trade Center attack a week after the airing of the final episode. ... read more

I left Maine with a heavy heart on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 for I had not seen a moose during my six-week visit (except for the mounted “albino” specimen and that was in Errol NH). Kidding aside, but admitting there was a hint of disappointment, I had had a great time in Maine and hope to return. According to MapQuest, the trip from Farmington ME to Lancaster NH was 99 miles and would take 2 hours and 21 minutes. That’s more in line with my overall approach to travel during The Great Adventure. I already had driven over the first 1/3 of the route while getting to the scenic drives I enjoyed so much in west central Maine; however, after I made it to Newly ME, the scenery was all novel to me. West of Bethel ... read more

Tuesday, August 28, 2012 found me facing a relatively long day behind the wheel – MapQuest told me 245 miles and a little over 4 hours by using I-95 for about half the trip. Although the stretch of I-95 between Houlton ME and Howland ME is not marked as scenic in my atlas and is not as scenic as many, it is at least as scenic as some stretches so labeled and, regardless of the designation, is an enjoyable drive. The Troll Valley Campground in Farmington ME is a small campground about a mile from town and was sparsely populated even over Labor Day Weekend. There were few attractions on my “to do” list other than three day-long (or at least the better part of a day) scenic drives. One of the two attractions was the ... read more

On Tuesday morning, August 21, 2012, I was still savoring the delight of the whale watching trip of Monday afternoon as I readied the Pilgrim for the drive north to Presque Isle ME. The weather was just as good as my mood. I drove back up US 1 to Calais ME instead of taking a slightly shorter route the GPS had offered me. First, I knew US 1 had a good surface and, second, I wanted to see if nicer weather would give me a better impression of the community. It did not. US 1 from Florida north is, for the most part, a great drive. Most of the surface is good, and the scenery between towns is enjoyable. Irene, the GPS, gave me perfect guidance to the Neil E. Michaud Campground about a mile south ... read more
