According to my trusty MapQuest, the trip from Burns Park in North Little Rock AR to Mississippi River RV Park in Memphis TN would be about 135 miles and would take just over 2 hours on THURSDAY, April 16, 2015. Mississippi River RV Park looks to be in a great location for the tourist – on the river, close to downtown – but there was no answer on the phone. Several attempts gave me zero results. Since the drive would be short, I decided I would have plenty of time to go to the address and find out, “What’s up, Doc?” I generally don’t set out for a destination without a reservation (or at least a phone conversation to confirm availability). So, cautious Uncle Larry developed a backup plan before departure. I arrived to find a ... read more

In May 2010, only two months into “The Great Adventure,” I made a one-week stop in Hot Springs AR and made a day trip to Little Rock to see three attractions: the Central High School National Historic Site, the Clinton Presidential Center and the Old Statehouse Museum. The Arkansas State Capitol and the Arkansas State Vietnam War Memorial remained on my “Must-See-In-Every-State-If-At-All-Practical” List. That list had developed after I had been on the road for several months and both those attractions had escaped me in that newbie foray into Arkansas. I utilize numerous mapping tools from my computer and hope *()&^#%$% the results coincide with Irene’s (my GPS’) analysis of my route; but I have my trusty Rand-McNally at my side – just in case. ‘Twas a very good thing I had followed my (some would ... read more

I was somewhat leery when I learned my travel day would be April Fool’s Day and hoped no untoward “jokes” would be played on me. That Wednesday, April 1, 2015, found me awakening to a mild but overcast day – nothing threatening, but a layer of gray gloom obscured the blue skies. I took a brief time out during teardown to chat with a neighbor and got underway AFTER the morning rush hour since my trip north from South Main RV Park to Diamond Jacks Casino & Resort in Bossier City LA would take me northward through most of metro Houston. Irene, my GPS, directed me onto U.S. 59 until I reached Carthage TX. There I turned northeastward on U.S. 79 until I reached its intersection with I-20 near Greenwood LA. A short drive eastward on ... read more

The drive from Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission TX to South Main RV Park in Houston TX on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 retraced the southern portion of my journey to Mission on US 281. When I reached Falfurrias TX, Irene (my GPS) directed me eastward on TX 285 until I reached Riviera TX where I turned north on US 77. In Victoria TX, I veered northeastward to Houston metro on US 59. The roads were in average condition and, for the most part, four lanes – some divided, some not. Since this part of Texas is much more populated that the stretch I drove on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 from El Paso TX to Junction TX, finding refueling stops was not as great a concern. The entire trip went without any glitches and found me arriving ... read more

My next stop was to be in Mission TX; however, the journey from El Paso TX would be slightly over 12 hours according to MapQuest – that does not accommodate my “cruising speed” of 65 mph instead of the posted 80 mph on Texas’ rural interstate highways, fuel and food stops, one hour each for teardown and setup and the hour lost moving from the Mountain Time Zone to the Central Time Zone. So…. Uncle Larry planned a one night stop at Junction TX – relatively close to the midpoint. I awoke to a light drizzle on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. That drizzle continued as I tore down my campsite at the Mission RV Park in El Paso and light rain or heavy drizzle continued for about 75 percent of the drive to Morgan Shady Park ... read more

From my retirement in 1998 until I began “The Great Adventure” in March 2010, I lived 2-1/2 hours from El Paso TX, whose literal translation means “The Passage,” and have been to the city many times to shop and to retrieve or to deposit passengers at the airport but have never actually SEEN the historic city. As an adolescent, El Paso’s namesake song by Marty Robbins offered a certain mystique to the city. Stories related by my relatives and my father’s friends who had been stationed at nearby Fort Bliss TX fueled my fascination. Having travelled through western Texas and southeastern New Mexico many times, I often wondered what factors caused such a vibrant, thriving city of almost ¾ million people (22nd largest in the U.S.) to develop HERE – amid such stark desolation. Since I relocated my winter headquarters to Phoenix metro early in 2014 and since one of my sister’s granddaughter’s (my great-niece) relocated to Chino Valley AZ in mid 2014, my sister has been planning a trip to Arizona and, then, to California to visit her best friend. She dislikes the snow and the cold of Illinois winters as much as I, but, all thing considered, it’s not really practical for her to relocate. At 84 years young, she doesn’t have the stamina to walk even moderate distances anymore, so I tried to pick a few attractions that wouldn’t tax her abilities too much and saved them for her visit in mid-February – a GREAT time to escape Illinois. Our first stop was the Wells Fargo Museum in downtown Phoenix AZ. There is no parking lot for ... read more

I had taken a look at the MapQuest data for the drive from Riverside CA to my winter base in Apache Junction AZ and didn’t really like what I found – it would be a much longer drive than I fancy. Drawing upon some shorter options, I remembered friends of mine from Illinois winter in Winterhaven CA, just across the Colorado River from Yuma AZ. A quick phone call informed me they already had arrived at their winter home, so Plan B went into full swing. ‘Twas another fine southern California day as I departed Rancho Jurupa Park. Irene, my GPS, guided me through Riverside and onto eastbound I-10. Near Indio CA, I exited onto CA 86 which took me to I-8 near El Centro CA. There I headed eastbound until I reached Winterhaven. I arrived ... read more

The agenda for Wednesday, November 12, 2014 was a drive to Riverside CA. I was looking forward to spending some time back in the area as Riverside is one of my old stomping grounds. After I returned from Vietnam, I was stationed at nearby Camp Pendleton CA and spent many weekends with my cousin and her husband (both teachers, now retired). I ended up returning to Riverside after my USMC days, spent a couple of years there in the early 1970s and, after some mild urging by my cousins to use my GI Bill education benefit, had gone to junior college there. College in the 70s – yes, Riverside is home to a lot of Larryistory. The Ram, Pilgrim and I departed Country Manor Mobile Home Community in Visalia CA under sunny, blue skies – well, ... read more

Wednesday, November 5, 2014 dawned another blue sky day and had me geared up for the drive from Cal Expo RV Park in Sacramento CA to the Country Manor Mobile Home Community in Visalia CA. The drive south on CA 99 is generally flat with an abundance of agricultural endeavors dotting the landscape. CA 99 is about as close to being an interstate highway as one can get without having the “I” in front of the route designation. By the time I arrived, the office was closed (shortened hours during the off season is a common encounter), but the manager saw me pull in, led me to my assigned site and told me we could settle the business in the morning. As I had noted in a previous blog, my southbound itinerary for the 2014 Chapter ... read more
