Bonaire The island is much as I remember it. The buildings looked freshly painted and the streets are clean and almost graffiti free. I arrived at the meeting place at the end of the pier early and found I forgot my credit card. I fought my way against the tide up the gangway, rushed back to my room and returned to the meeting spot. It was great morning exercise. But wait there’s more to come. The boat was moored at the Divi Flamingo Hotel so off we went by foot. The hotel is not far, about ¼ mile but we all had our gear so it was a trek. Once on board we immediately headed to Klein Bonaire, a small islet offshore that is located in the middle of the Bonaire Marine Park. We began our ... read more

Samana, Dominican Republic I awoke to a cloudy sky. By 10 am the when the tour started it was pouring. The rain stopped as we boarded the tender. At the pier our group boarded the catamaran and Wellington, our guide promised sunshine in a half hour. Evidently he has a long line to the weather god as the sun came our and we had a beautiful day. We sailed along the coast and Wellington pointed out the various resorts and small villages that line the coast. Fishing and farming along with tourism are the main economic activities. DR also fosters and trains promising young baseball talents and the major leagues have profited. We sailed/motored to a small offshore island. I was second into the warm water and headed to the rocky shore. The bottom was mostly ... read more

Turks and Caicos … NOT We had a surprise sea day. The winds were so strong that the Captain decided not to try to navigate the narrows. There was no way we could dock and a tendering operation was out of the question. The winds would not let the ship to maintain a safe position away from the reefs. Headed for the aft pool, found a lounge chair and read for about an hour. Then a do it yourself taco, nacho lunch and a restful time in the shade on the Promenade Deck and decided it was time for a nap. Found the message light on and needed to see the Front Desk. Straightened out a credit card problem, returned for my nap and had a message that the casino would be running a Hold ‘em ... read more

Central America Caribbean February 28th 2011

Half Moon Cay Enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the Dining Room and headed for the Cay. It was another beautiful day, hardly a cloud in the sky, and the water surrounding the Cay was clear. I rented a float, found a lounge in the shade and headed into the sea. It was refreshing but I soon acclimated and floated in the gentle sea. It was so peaceful that I almost fell asleep. After about forty-five minutes I decided to get out of the sun and read a bit. Oh no, forgot the Kindle so I sat and people watched. After a bit I headed to the rocky edge of the beach and enjoyed my first snorkel of the trip. Since the bottom is primarily sand and very shallow there were few fish to be seen. At ... read more

Sail away My cave is great! First time in an inside cabin and I lucked out with a very large one. I have a wrap around sofa and coffee table. The bed is set up as a queen and there is at least 4 feet of room on each side. This is more room than the average ocean view cabins I’ve been in. There is plenty of closet space, a frig, safe, and ample size desk. It’s aft so I get some motion and I keep the TV tuned to the bow cam and therefore have a view. Right now I’m watching the sunrise as we approach Half Moon Cay. It’s looking like a lovely day. Yesterday I was invited to a Mariners luncheon on boarding. There I met a couple from NC and three retired ... read more

Into the warm --- Random thoughts on get away day. Traffic at 8:45 on Rt 95 was sparse, more like a Saturday than a Wednesday. That can be attributed to the President’s Day vacation period in part but it really felt spooky to pass my Stamford exit at 55 mph or more. For some unknown and silly reason Delta has renamed the area in the concourse where the gates are located as the “Gatehouse”. “ If Ms Smith is in the gatehouse, please go to the podium at gate 7” The flight attendants were not happy campers. The plane was small, an MD88, with limited overhead space and it was a full flight. It’s fun to watch folks cram their coats in the overhead just after the flight attendants asked them to wait until the luggage ... read more

Joy of travel – meeting people On the shuttle from the airport yesterday I chatted with a couple from Ontario, Canada. Today I was sitting by the pool when they peeked in, on their way to the shopping center. We got to talking and they asked me to go along. I needed some items and so off we went. There was a shuttle service for $10pp but we decided to walk the two or three blocks to the crosswalk. It was a pleasant walk in beautiful warm weather. Ellie and Mac are in their mid-seventies, look and act much younger and are sailing Friday on the Westerdam. They are real happy folks and pleasure to be with. We did our shopping, Mac stocked up on wine for the cruise and I picked up a bottle of ... read more

November 2-6 At Sea November 2. Lobster tails for lunch. Lost the Hold ‘Em tournament but made a little in the cash game. Read on my verandah with a glass lovely Portugees white wine and dressed for formal night. Dinner included both pate and escargot so I had the pate for an appetizer the lovely cold soup and a double order of escargot for my main course. The show tonight was a magician. It was entertaining. Then it was off to watch another lecture on my DVD and prepare for another stressful day. Nov. 3 The Sea was a little rough today so I played in the wave pool. No, HAL does not usually have a wave pool but today it did. It was fun, like being a kid again. For lunch I went for Mexican, ... read more

October 30, 31 - Boo The seas are calmer today and the wind has died down. The Captain is ducking storms and doing a great job. Today is the CruiseCritic Cabin Crawl but first there is the lecture on the founding of the EU to attend and lunch and reading and a little sun. The group meets at the Pinnacle Bar. We are 45 strong and some are wearing Halloween masks. The purpose of the crawl is two fold. One we all get to see the various cabins and second we get to party hardy. My cabin is on the list and it is the least impressive of the lot but there are bats hanging from the ceiling and the lights are out and eerie sounds are echoing down the hallway. We visit superior verandahs, deluxe ... read more
