Another beautiful day in London Town and I’m off for a two-hour walk around the Palace area and the West End. We started out at Big Ben (St. Stephens Tower) and headed off through St. James Park towards Buckingham Palace. We hurried along so that we could see the guards. The park was filled with people enjoying the great weather, reading, playing with the kids or their dog, the ducks, geese and swans honking. We found a great spot along the Mall just around the corner from St. James Palace. The New Guards paraded by, band playing, scarlet coats brilliant in the sunshine. These soldiers will replace the guards currently on duty. After they passed we followed our guide through the park and to the area where the old Guards were guarding. There are five groups ... read more

The day dawned bright and sunny. I hadn’t planned anything in particular so decided to take a ride on the river to Kew Gardens. The boat was a converted 1890’s barge and left from Westminster. Big Ben ringing twelve noon announced our scheduled departure. Since the weather was fine I rode the open top deck and had great views of the passing scene. We road passed the Houses of Parliament and the HQ of MI5 and MI6 and the sight of the new US embassy next to a trash recycling plant. Does anyone else find that strange? The old Embassy has been sold to the Saudis. Luxury flats and million dollar houseboats have replaced the warehouses and barge docks. Our guide pointed out the “Homes of Rich and Famous” but I am so out of it ... read more

Slept in this morning. The alarm went off at seven and I snoozed till 8:00. Boy did that feel good. Hives gone. Following a quick breakfast, cereal, fruit, juice and coffee I caught the tube for the Barkerloo Line and got off at Charing Cross Station. It was a short walk to Trafalgar Square and the National Museum. Dingbat left without replenishing the cash supplies so I was lucky I had enough for the Audio Player. If I weren’t old I wouldn’t have. I love those senior discounts. The museum is fairly small compared to the Metropolitan in NYC but has an astounding number of masterworks. It is limited to European art from the 12th to the 20th centuries. I took the docent tour where a group of us were led to a few important paintings ... read more

Awoke early to an overcast day. Read for a while then went downstairs for a breakfast of fresh fruit, juice and coffee. A bit pricy but was convenient. Around 9 I headed out. Just as I left it started to sprinkle so I went back for my jacket. Halfway down the stairs of my hotel I saw the sunshine. Decided to drop off the raincoat and take my chances with the weather. My plan was to get my travel card, hop the tube to the Tower stop, meet the group from London Walks at 10:30 and tour the Tower of London. Paddington is just a block away but the tube station was a zoo. The machine doesn’t sell 7-day travel cards so it was line up to buy the ticket from the only live person selling ... read more

New York to London I swear it will be the VERY LAST TIME that I get carried away with luggage. I seem to over estimate my hauling capabilities and the availability of skycaps and just get myself in trouble. From door to gate took exactly 3 hours. Would have taken longer if a nice gentleman at the airport hadn’t taken pity on me and hauled the bags to the check in counter bypassing the lines. I thought he was a skycap but it seems that he was just a Good Samaritan and would not take a tip. The security line itself took almost 45 minutes but once the bags were checked it was a smooth trip. Enjoyed a salad before boarding. It was a full flight and for some reason I was unable to get much ... read more

Thursday It’s our last full day in Spain and today it’s all about beach and pool time and cocktails by the water and dinner on the beach. Marylou and I had a lovely breakfast and then sat by (and in) the pool for a couple of hours. We showered and walked the beach looking for shells but only found stones, but very pretty stones they were; marble and quartz and others that looked like polished limestone or sandstone. Above the hotels along the beach is the town of Torremollinos. To get there one can climb the steps or take the lift. Guess which one we opted for. Unfortunately it was about 2:45 and the lift was closed for siesta so we opted to people watch and sip mojitos. La Cabana won the “best mojitos of the ... read more

It is now Friday, 6/17, and I’m back on the blog. Just going to hit the highlights and hope to remember all the wonderful sights we have seen. Tuesday Tuesday morning we left beautiful Granada for Seville with a stop in Cordoba to see the Mosque and the old Jewish Quarter. Our guide, Carmen, lives in Cordoba and loves the city with a passion that infected us all. Our first stop was the Jewish Quarter. Prior to the reconquesta by the Catholics from the Moors, the culture lived peacefully together with three religions, Islam, the official religion, Christianity, and Judeism. Once the Catholics gained control the Jews were restricted to living in a particular area, basically a ghetto. During the Inquisition, the Jews either had to convert or were expelled. Those who converted were never really ... read more

Leaving from JFK is never easy. Arrived at the airport at 5:30, a two hour and fifteen minute drive on a Friday afternoon. Klutzy me managed to flop on the sidewalk but appeared to be unhurt. Got in line to check in two people behind Ken and Laura. Rich and Fran were at the counter negotiating flight changes as our flight was delayed until 1:30 am. No point going into detail but after demanding priority security screening to make the “6:00 pm? flight, when we got the gate it was now scheduled to leave at 9:00, the same time as our original flight. MaryLou and I shared a great salad and a glass of wine and relaxed for an hour or so at the bar. Except for a brief interlude of turbulence the flight was smooth ... read more

ST MARTIN OPPS! Wrote it, didn't publish it. Today I was up early. Had breakfast is the Windjammer, really good scrambled eggs, fruit and potato patty. I was one of the first off the ship and checked in for my tour at the information booth. The sky was very overcast and didn’t bode well. Fellows around the booth were joking about selling tickets for skiing and they weren’t talking water skiing. One fellow was running around with a down jacket with the hood up. I guess they it felt cold to the locals. We got a bit of a late start and then the skies opened up. A typical tropical cloudburst! Water was running down the hillsides and the streets started to flood. Kind of reminded me of Guadalcanal, well that’s a bit of an exaggeration! ... read more
