We've traveled about 3,500 miles so far of the 10,000 that we anticipate going. Ron figured out how to add a map to our entry. If you click 'fit route' on the map it will show our trip so far. This entry will be lots of pictures so be sure to scroll past the map. Right now our camper is parked next to two enormous pines at Deception Pass State Park. We'll be here total of 8 nights - a very long lay over for us right now. It will be nice to slow down a bit. The park is on Whidbey Island, north of Seattle. This park is so picturesque, it is like camping in a postcard. Towering pine trees, ferns, huge boulders. I don't think pictures will do it justice. This is the most ... read more

Starting Sept. 29 we had several days of rainy weather and cooler temps. I started piecing a quilt on my sewing machine and Ron fixed the camper windows again. This time the windows work but the turn signal doesn't and neither does one brake light. I'm sure there is a repair shop in our future. We also moved across the Columbia River into Washington to a campground up the side of a mountain. Down by the river there is the constant sound of the trains and the highway, up in the mountain all of that disappears. Timberlake Campground in Home Valley is a lovely place if you are traveling through this area. We picked up our mail in Hood River, a very pretty town, with steep streets and way too many bicycle shops. There aren't many ... read more

After leaving Crater's of the Moon we followed the Snake River to Baker City , Oregon. Here there is an Interpretive Center for the Oregon Trail. The display is enormous with mounts of real oxen teams pulling wagons and horses and riders. It is so lifelike that we came away feeling like we had seen the real thing and had a SMALL glimpse of the hardships these folks went through. But unlike those pioneers when we got back to the campground Ron flew his RC glider in a mowed hay field and we made ice cream in a bag which worked just like it was supposed to and was pretty tasty. An aside - the folks here in Oregon are some of the most considerate drivers we have ever seen. If you only look like you ... read more

Trials of camper traveling and Yellowstone continued... When camper traveling there are always problems that come up. This year has not been as bad as when our transmission went out in Texarkana on New Year's weekend. Our biggest concern, although Ron says not to worry, is the camper overheating on long grades. Ron has figured out ways to overcome the problem one of which is to turn the heater on full blast, this works out well except for the second problem we have. The automatic window doesn’t work! Ron has fixed it twice, but it won't stay fixed. The first time it locked when the windows were down - a real problem with Dave in the camper and the second time it locked when the heat was on full blast. This made for a very ... read more

On Monday, the 14th, we got up to find a buffalo in our campground at Custer. I guess the rangers call him Fred. Some nice neighbors volunteered to take our picture if we wanted to stand by him, I declined that offer! Today we went to see Mt. Rushmore. Just the drive there from Custer State Park on 16 is an experience. There were 3 tunnels and the end of each framed Mt Rushmore. There was a spiral on part of the road that wound up, or down depending if you were coming or going, just like a spiral staircase. The monument itself doesn't look real just because it is so big and seems impossible to have been chiseled out of a mountain side. We heard some people complaining because there is no charge to see ... read more

Ron was right -the fun did start in South Dakota! The drive from Michigan is very long! One of the best parts is on highway 90 right at the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is all hills and valleys where the small rivers feed into the Mississippi. There are stretches of S. Dakota that have acres and acres of corn and sunflowers. We are in Custer State Park which is on the western edge of the state about 70 miles from Wyoming. This park is enormous, 71,000 acres in the Black Hills. We are in the Blue Bell campground; there are 7 others. On the way to the campsite we saw one buffalo along the road and one in a campground, big horn sheep were coming down the side of a hill, also a deer ... read more
