On April 7th, Kris and Ed joined us at Willow Beach Campground which is located in Arizona , just over the border from Boulder City, Nevada. The campground is a striking one with spires raising up from a high desert floor. The beach part of the name refers to the shoreline of the Colorado River which flows out of Black Canyon. The campsites are a steep 7/10 of a mile up from the river. We had three days packed with adventure. Day one was a visit and tour of the Hoover Dam. This is an amazing structure. The base of the dam is 600+ feet thick and narrows to 45' at the top. If you visited the dam before 2010 there has been a major change. The road across the dam is not used for through ... read more

This is a catching up blog since we have had very limited internet for a while. We have had our Las Vegas adventure thanks to Aaron and Tracy. They showed us how to conquer the Vegas strip by using trams, monorails, overpasses, elevators, escalators, moving sidewalks, shuttle busses, taxis and plain old foot power. March 30 - April 5 was a great week with a mix of hiking, a Vegas show, buffets and slot machines. We also got to spend Easter with family and celebrated 2 birthdays. To start the week we set up our camper at Sam's Town Casino which has a free shuttle to the strip which is nine miles SW. Using the shuttle made it easy for Aaron and Tracy to get back and forth from their hotel to our campground once they ... read more

March 1st will always be remembered as the day we spotted the Elegant Trogon our 432nd life bird, and what a terrific bird it was. We had just arrived at Patagonia State Park on Patagonia Lake in the town of Patagonia , AZ, and decided to walk the birding trail. Folks coming off the trail were telling us to hurry because the trogon had been spotted. We had tried to find this elusive bird in 2006 but we always just missed it. We hustled down the trail and saw 2 people who waved us over, and there he was!!!! We watched him for such a long time, in fact we left before the trogon did. A few days later we joined a birding group and when the trogon was spotted the group became the stereotypical bird ... read more

Tomorrow is our last day in Desert Trails RV Resort. Our month long stay has been an interesting one. We had some truck problems which involved a lot of expensive repairs - 2 different times, a rental car twice and a lot of frustration dealing with the Ford dealership, but all is better now. Getting back to life at the resort - there is an activity every evening in the Recreation Room. We made it to Karaoke one night, not to sing but to enjoy the music. We sat at a table with Larry and Nancy, folks who came all the time. They got up and did 'Running Bear'. If you remember the song it involves Running Bear who loves Little White Dove - they tried to get Ron to play the part of Little White ... read more

Yaaay! Our long underwear is packed away - probably too personal - but it is nice to have some warm weather. We made our way across Texas and New Mexico and arrived in Arizona on January 30th and are currently staying at Desert Trails RV Resort. We actually have an address here since we are staying until February 28. Ron or Tam Milostan, Desert Trail RV Resort, 3551 S. San Joaquin Rd, Tucson, AZ 85735 I know the word resort is in the address, but that word is used VERY loosely at this 'Resort'. The campsites are very close together and the views from our camper are not what we are used to. But on the positive side the folks here are very friendly and if you sit outside you will be sure to have one ... read more

On January 4th we left The Big Easy (not sure why New Orleans is called that) and headed to Texas. Our first stop was Caddo State Park right over the border from Louisiana in Karnack, Texas (birth place of Lady Bird Johnson). Dave was so happy to be out of the big city. He never asked even once go out for a walk while we were in New Orleans. We were also glad to trade the night time sirens for the howl of coyotes once again. Caddo is a park in the Big Cypress Bayou and when the water level is high it can turn into a maze of ponds, back water, and cypress trees. We paddled the area several times and always felt dwarfed by the size of the cypress trees. We found a beaver ... read more

Happy New Year to every one of you and your families. We also hope you had a very merry Christmas. Being on the road at Christmas is difficult, one of us was kinda weepy, but avoiding the snow storms in the north has its advantages. At Christmas we were still at Gulf State Park in Alabama. We really like this park and might stay here for a month next winter as this state park allows extended stays during the winter months. We did have some scary weather, but the weather man kept saying how unusual it all was - we hope he is right if we come back for a longer time. From our site we were able to push aside some cattails and launch our kayaks . On our paddle we watched as an osprey ... read more

On our last day at Hunting Island State Park we took a ride to the pier. It was bad timing on our part since a pilot whale had beached itself along the surf line. We watched as it struggled to keep its blow hole out of the water. The park personal were waiting for the DNR to arrive before they attempted any help. We left after an hour of watching. Very sad to see our first , up close, of a whale in this kind of situation. The next day we learned that 4 more whales had stranded themselves in the area and eventually died. They loaded them on a flat bed trucks and took them to Charlotte for examination. We never did hear what was wrong. Our good friends Tim and Ann introduced us to ... read more

Hey there everyone, we're on the road again. This year we're not doing any volunteer work. We loved the experience last year ( the blog entries for that trip start inDecember 2011) but the volunteer situation we were accepted for this year involved cleaning public bathrooms and that is just not part of our retirement plan. Ron told them that when they hired professional cleaning crews we would apply again. We left Brighton on November 25, Sunday at about 9 and pulled into Levi Jackson State Park near Corbin, KY around 6pm. A great little park and perfect as a park to organize all the stuff we just threw into the camper before we left. Somewhere along the way one of the rear panels fell off the camper!! It's like losing a back panel off a ... read more

The last blog was March 20 and our situation has changed dramatically since that time - more about that later. Our last days at Sevillta were enjoyable but also sad. There was a great volunteer dinner prepared by the staff - prime rib, salmon and lots of side dishes - awards and gift cards. But it was also a time to say good-bye to some very special people. We had become good friends with the 7 permanent staff members of the refuge and also the other volunteers. We plan to come back and visit again and also see what the remodeled visitors center looks like. Our trip home was to involve some wandering to new places before and after we met up with Aaron and Tracy in San Antonio on Easter. Our first stop was at ... read more
