Dave the traveler
Dave at Isaac Creek Campground On our last day at Hunting Island State Park we took a ride to the pier. It was bad timing on our part since a pilot whale had beached itself along the surf line. We watched as it struggled to keep its blow hole out of the water. The park personal were waiting for the DNR to arrive before they attempted any help. We left after an hour of watching. Very sad to see our first , up close, of a whale in this kind of situation. The next day we learned that 4 more whales had stranded themselves in the area and eventually died. They loaded them on a flat bed trucks and took them to Charlotte for examination. We never did hear what was wrong.
Our good friends Tim and Ann introduced us to the tradition of stopping at small local taverns for a beer in order to get a feel for the community - sounds like a good excuse doesn’t it? So for anyone who comes to this area, Johnson Creek Tavern just over the bridge from Hunting State Park is a great place. The tavern was also serving buckets of local steamed oysters and Ron finally
Eastbank Campground
1,000's of ducks and coots out in the lake convinced me to try them - if you don’t think about what you're eating , they aren't bad. The She-crab soup, on the other hand, was the best we've ever had.
We had a long drive to our next Corp of Engineer campground on the border of Georgia and Florida. These long rides are a time for Ron and I to bond…. he told me I have been a real asset on this trip - I'm sure he said asset, so I told him he was good to have around for manual labor. On this drive we also decided that the old adage about experience being the best teacher is not really true. For instance at home we are always forgetting to put the coffee pot under the maker and end up with coffee all over the floor and dripping downstairs onto the carpet. We have started the same tradtion in the camper .
The Eastbank Campground on Seminole Lake , by Chattahoochee, Florida is very nice. Our site was right by the water and we were able to launch our kayaks right there. The paddling was only around the shore line, but it was still fun. The
lake is on a flyway and the ducks numbered in the 1000's ; the number of coots was in the millions. One day a bald eagle sat in the tree right in our campsite for a good long while and we watched him from the camper windows.
Our next stop was at another COE campground called Isaac Creek near Monroeville , AL. The campground is located a short distance above a dam on the Alabama River. This is a submerged dam which means you can go right over it and plunge down the other side!! After a heavy rain the current was very fast and lots of debris was heading downstream over the dam. We never put our kayaks in at this park. We had reservations for 7 nights , but left after 3. After hiking and biking the trails several times there wasn't much left to do. The fact that it rained and the creek was rising most of the time didn't help. So we packed up and left.
We're at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, AL , right now. Great park, great site with sewers, electric and water and near to the city. Great reception
Seminole lake
Paddling along the shore of Seminole Lake on our phones and for the computer. Lots of bike trails and we can put the kayaks in at our site again to paddle two little lakes that are part of the park.
A cold front is moving through the area today and this morning we woke up to our very smart phones alerting us to a tornado warning. At times the rain came down in chunks not drops. It really is a bit scary to be in a camper during a tornado warning. Sunshine now!!
Pictures this time include a tour of our camper. We're a little short of adventure pics. 11 pictures in all. Click on pictures to enlarge and scroll down to see them all.
