We have been going at a slower pace since Ron broke his toe. Not much to do for the piggy that cried wee wee wee all the way home, but ice, rest and tape. We did an afternoon at the Fort McDowell casino in Fountain Hills. Ron won $40 on a penny slot machine so that kept us going for a while. We moved on to Cottonwood, AZ, to Dead Horse Ranch State Park. The old part of Cottonwood is a great little town. It considers itself old since it has been around since the late 1800's. There are several good restaurants and cafes and crafty type stores. On the weekend we went to the local Fair Grounds to see the Flywheel Engine Show - there was also a tractor parade! From our campsite we can ... read more

After leaving New Mexico we headed to Tombstone, AZ, for 4 days. We stayed at Wells Fargo RV Park right in the middle of old Tombstone on historic Allen Street. This is quite a tourist town, as you might imagine. They don’t do the gunfights on the main street anymore, but the stage coach rides came by our campsite every 15-30 minutes. Our plan was to have a beer in every saloon during our stay, but we ran out of time. Our favorite saloon was Big Nose Kate's Saloon. They had live entertainment and lots of old timey stuff. The most historic building, which is in original condition (including the dust), is the Bird Cage Theatre. It was famous for 8 years from 1881-1889 as a Honky Tonk. In those 9 years it never closed its ... read more

We are the new owners of a 5th wheel camper and truck to pull it with!! Our plan was to go to the botanical garden in San Antonio, and on the way stop to check out a 5th wheel we had seen at an RV show. We never got to the garden and by the end of the day we had traded in our Jeep and camper for a big white truck and 30' 5th wheel. Parting with the old was kinda sad, but living in the new is awesome!! We stopped for a few days in Kerrville, TX ,and stayed at the state park there. Kerrville is the city my family lived in when we first immigrated to the US from Austria in 1952. Our point of entry was New Orleans. We were sponsored by ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Luling February 7th 2011

This blog will be mostly pictures. We have been staying at Palmetto State Park located between Luling and Gonzales, Texas, since Jan. 28th. Did you hear about the Arctic blast that came through Texas - we were right in its path! We had 4 nights of 18 degree temps. We ran 2 heaters to stay warm and in the morning had to run a heater under the camper to thaw frozen pipes. The weather aside, this is an interesting place to spend a couple weeks. The park has a great little campground, hiking/biking trails and a rich history. We visited both Luling and Gonzales several times. Luling was founded in 1874, but really boomed when oil was discovered in 1922, that opened up a 12 mile long 2 mile wide oil field. The smell of oil ... read more

While staying at the RV Resort in Mission, we took a day to visit South Padre Island. In 2006 we work/camped at a private campground on the island for 2 months and found some favorite restaurants and areas that we wanted to revisit. The campground that we worked at has now been sold and is currently a KOA, and sold right along with it was our favorite restaurant, Fishbones, now called Pier 19. But the location is still on the fishing pier with a nice view. If you wait long enough you can see dolphins swim right under the dock. The breakfast at Pier 19 was still excellent, but the fish stew is no longer on the menu. The Birding center, north of the campground, is a great place for a walk even if you aren't ... read more

We have been in the Bentson Palms RV Resort in Mission Texas for a week now. We had 3 days of lovely weather and now 4 days of rainy cold. This camper gets mighty small in bad weather! We rarely stay in private parks like this; we much prefer state or national parks. But we wanted to bird this area and this park is a short bike ride from Bentson State Park which is part of the World Birding Center in Texas. The hurricane last year affected this area and some parts of the park were flooded when they had to open Falcon Dam. They are still repairing roads and removing mud. The area we left along the Alabama Coast had some terrific prices on shrimp and we had shrimp every day until we left. The ... read more

We're on the road again!!! We left Brighton on the 26th, and decided to go a bit west to avoid some of the winter weather south and east. Interstate 69 to 65 brought us to the south on clear roads with lots of sunshine. The last trace of snow was in Birmingham, AL - Ron gets credit for seeing the first armadillo (a live one) and I get the first palm tree sighting. So far only a few things we realize we left behind - most importantly my earplugs! I had a set especially made so I wouldn't smother Ron with a pillow some night when the snoring got too bad. Kris is mailing it so he will live to snore another night. We are at Gulf Shores State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Lovely park, ... read more

Day: 175 Miles: 7,580 with about 2,500 left to get home The Tucson Gem and Fossil show is enormous and we dropped in on just a very small bit of it. The huge specimens of gems and crystals for sale makes us wonder if anything is left in some places. We made some purchases and wanted many more. I found a ring with small bits of opal and amethyst set into silver and Ron bought a large piece of malachite to carve and polish. We'll be back next year. After the gem show we spent 2 weeks in McDowell Mountain Park just outside of Fountain Hills. This is a Maricopa County park and has won awards as one of the best parks in the US. Our campsite had one neighboring site across the street, but on ... read more

Day 143 Many of our adventures since leaving the condo have had to do with weather - wind, rain and snow. We arrived in Catalina Mountain State Park on the 18th. This is one of our most favorite parks, the views are wonderful and the hikes in the mountains are a challenge for us. This is also the park that we got stranded in 2 years ago when the only road in was covered in mud and sand when the snow melted in the mountains and the wash over the road ran like a river. Would history repeat itself?? Of course!!!! We left the nice cozy condo on the hill to park our camper at the base of Santa Catalina Mountains when the worst storm in many years was about to hit the Tucson area. ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Florence January 17th 2010

DAY 129 We certainly have enjoyed the luxury of being in Cindy and Rich's condo in Florence. Our square footage in the camper is about 105', the condo is about 6 times that. This area is known as the Cowboy Cradle of the Great Southwest and Florence is the fifth oldest city in Arizona founded in 1866. It is on the banks of the Gila River and there is a bridge over the Gila - but honestly we haven’t seen any water yet. The River Bottom Saloon advertises that it is on the banks of Gila River with water so clear you can see the bottom - LOL! Ron joined the flying club that meets in the park. On his first time out flying on a real airfield, he crashed the glider. He has flown this ... read more
