Geo: -24.7805, 26.2697This evening Paul and I got in the Land Rover and sat in the wetlands for a little bit to observe the bird life. The only bird that we saw was an African Spoonbill. Luckily there was also an elephant bull for me to watch. He was happily standing in the wetland and eating grass. After about half an hour we drove back to the lodge.... read more

Geo: -24.7805, 26.2697This afternoon I went for a drive with Paul to Derdepoort Gate. He was picking up staff that were coming back from leave. The waterhole/wetlands area was very busy this afternoon. There were waterbuck, impalas, zebras, various birds and elephants swimming in the waterhole. The elephants were having a great time swimming and playing in the water. It was so cute to see them move quicker as they got closer to the water.A few minutes later along the road I was excited to spot a lioness. She was slowly walking into the bush. Ten minutes, just after we had past the airstrip, we came across a family of warthogs. It was fun to observe them. When we stopped to look at them, they stopped eating, looked at us with their tails straight up in ... read more

Geo: -24.6601, 28.6966Again this morning we got up at 7am. We started the day with an Amarula coffee and rusks. We drove to the Jacana Hide. Along the way we saw the largest bird in the world – an ostrich. At the hide we saw many types of weavers, but not much else. As we drove back towards camp we saw a journey of giraffe. There were four of them. We stayed and watched them for a little bit. Back at camp we had toasted jaffles for breakfast and then packed up. I wish we could have stayed here for longer. It has been a relaxing trip. Next time I would like to do more of the walking trails. A few hours later we were back in Johannesburg. That evening we had a fun night out, ... read more

Geo: -24.6463, 28.6884This morning we got up at about 7am. Before going out for a drive we had a coffee with Amarula and some rusks. This morning we were going to the other side of the nature reserve. The strange thing with this game reserve is that to get to the other side, we had to exit at the gate and then enter again. The gate at the other side was locked with a combination padlock, we were given the code on check-in yesterday. The drive to the other side took us about twenty minutes. We entered this gate and walked towards the Croke Hide. This morning we saw many birds, butterflies and various dragonflies. The Croke Hide had also been burnt down by the bushfire. We then walked to the Dabchick Hide. This one had ... read more

Geo: -24.6463, 28.687This morning we met Neil and Claudine at Stuart's house. They happened to be in Johannesburg for leave the same time as us. The four of us went to the supermarket and bought food for our short trip away. Just after midday we finally left Johannesburg for Nylsvely Nature Reserve. It was a nice drive north and it gave us the chance to catch up. Paul and I were here about 18 months ago and really enjoyed our stay. This nature reserve consists mainly of a floodplain, but it is not flooded very often. This reserve attracts a large variety of birds, especially water birds and is a bird lover's paradise with over 380 varieties! There are also mammals here, but nothing dangerous. Due to this there were many walking paths in the reserve. ... read more

Geo: -24.7805, 26.2697Late this afternoon Paul and I got in the Land Cruiser and parked the car in the middle of the wetlands. We sat here for about half an hour and observed the birds. In the waterhole there was a terrapin standing on a log, with its neck stretched out enjoying the sun. We also saw a yellow weaver and a Woodland Kingfisher.... read more

Geo: -26.1538, 28.0389This morning we left at 5am as we wanted to get back to Johannesburg before sunset. From there Brett and Barney still had to drive back to Nambiti Game Reserve, as they had to work tomorrow. An hour into the journey we were stopped at a police road block. The policeman checked our car papers and asked a few questions. We told him that we were on our way back to South Africa. He then asked for some Coca Cola. I told him that we had none left, only cordial but he wasn't interested in that, he sadly waved us on.The rest of the journey was uneventful. We drove the back roads to avoid the capital – Maputo. We crossed at the Ressano Gracia border. Here there were so many people just hanging around, ... read more

Geo: -24.911, 34.187I woke up early this morning and decided to drag Paul out of bed with me for a walk along the beach. There were only a few local people on the beach. We went for a swim - nice and refreshing. Even though it was early, it was still warm enough for a swim. On the way back to the chalet, we went via the restaurant/pool/bar area. We wanted to take lots of photos to send to the travel agent with our big long complaint about this place. After breakfast, we slowly packed up our things and started to put what we no longer needed in the car. Tomorrow morning we were going home and I didn't want to go back. I could easily stay here for another week. During the afternoon while Paul ... read more

Geo: -24.911, 34.187We woke up to a clear, blue sky and warm ocean breeze. Last night we had a terrible night sleep. It was hot and there was no breeze. After breakfast, Paul and I went for a drive to the local village. It was about a ten minute drive. The guys thought that they were in need of meat. The only meat that we found was very expensive and Paul decided that they could survive a day without meat. The only other option for meat was to buy live chickens. Paul didn't buy them as he wasn't too sure if they were that desperate for meat. We did end up buying a large bag full of fresh, delicious bread rolls, coke, cheese and chocolate! In this village there were many little market stalls selling tomatoes, ... read more

Geo: -24.911, 34.187This morning we had a sleep in. We slept so well last night due to the sea breeze. The weather was disappointing this morning – grey, overcast and not very warm. In the afternoon, at low tide, Paul and I went for a walk along the beach. I was hoping to see some interesting sea life in the rock pools – but no such luck. Paul tried to catch a fish and was lucky enough to catch a garfish, which bit him when he was getting the hook out of its mouth. Finally the sun broke through the clouds and we enjoyed a nice blue sky. I got quite a bit more reading done this afternoon.... read more
