Geo: 5.86667, 117.967This morning we had a coffee and pastry at the cafe in the hotel. Our taxi picked us up at 8:30am. We hired him to drive us around for the day, so much easier than trying to work out the local bus timetable. Our first destination was the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Here we would see wild orangutans and young ones that were orphaned and learning life skills so that they could be released back into the wild. We arrived in about half an hour. The adult entrance fee costs international visitors six times more than the price for local visitors. Although we thought the price was quite reasonable. We had to pay extra to use our cameras. We had to leave everything in lockers and just take our cameras in. The first orangutan ... read more

Geo: 5.84117, 118.113I had a great, normal night's sleep last night – jetlag is gone! We got up early, packed our bags and then went to the bank to get more cash for our trip. The bank was only a block away. Then it was breakfast time and we ate at the cafe next to the hotel. At 10am we were in front of the hotel looking for our taxi. He found us and we were off. This driver was better than yesterday's, as he didn't tailgate. It took an hour to get to the airport and cost the same as yesterday's journey of 120 Ringgit. We quickly found the crowded Air Asia desks. The lines were massive and we soon realised that they were moving too slowly. We had already checked in on-line like everyone ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684Rach and I left Melbourne on a delayed Air Asia flight just after midnight last night. We arrived at Tullamarine Airport with plenty of time before our flight. Rach drove us in her car and we parked it in long term parking. Once we checked our bags in we went through Immigration. On the other side we walked around and looked for somewhere to eat. At the WHSmith we bought some drinks, snacks and magazines for the flight. Then we went in search of a snack to eat. I felt like some hot chips from Hungry Jack's. No such luck, it was nearly 11pm and they were closing and wouldn't allow us in. I was very unimpressed, as there were many travellers still around waiting for late night flights and most of the eateries ... read more

Geo: -24.1511, 30.9492This morning we got up early as we had a busy day ahead of us. As we had breakfast I noticed some animals on the other side of the river. There were about six warthogs of different ages. They were busy eating grass and digging in the ground with their tusks. Near the warthogs there was a small herd of impalas. After we had our breakfast we cleaned up and packed all our belongings into the car. Unfortunately on the short drive out of the reserve we didn't see much wildlife. On the six hour drive back to Johannesburg, once again we were pulled over by the police. I was so glad that again it wasn't me driving! Apparently Paul was driving just over the speed limit. We stopped and had a little chat to ... read more

Geo: -24.1511, 30.9492This morning we had a sleep in and then sat outside as we ate breakfast. Later this morning we drove to the nearest town of Hoedspruit. Here we were meeting up with two of Paul's friends who he did his guiding course with many years ago. Together we had lunch and then we went back to the lodge. On the drive through the reserve back to the lodge, we only saw a couple of wildebeest. We spent the afternoon relaxing outside the lodge and looking out at the river in the hope of some more amazing sightings. Later in the afternoon we spotted a couple of waterbuck on the other side of the river hiding among the long grass. It was a very peaceful afternoon.... read more

Geo: -23.926, 31.4209This morning we got up early and prepared ourselves for a day out. We were going to spend the day in Kruger National Park. It would take us about an hour to get there. We left Maninghi Lodge just after 6am. On the drive out we saw a few animals – waterbuck, kudus and impalas. It was an easy drive to Kruger on the main roads.Once in the park using the Phalaborwa Gate, we drove slowly and enjoyed all the animal sightings. I was happy to be back in Kruger, as it had been four years since we were here! To begin with, we saw giraffe on the way to Sable Hide. Here we parked and got out to spend some time in the hide. From the hide we could see many impalas grazing. ... read more

Geo: -24.1505, 30.956We were up quite early this morning, as we were being taken for a game drive by the lodge owners. We left just after 7am. Soon we stopped to watch a couple of giraffe, saw some antelopes (kudus, impalas, waterbucks and a grey duiker) and then had to stop and wait for a large herd of about 150 buffaloes to cross the track. There were quite a few young buffaloes in this herd and they were just a few metres from the vehicle. The buffaloes were slowly moving through the bush. Once they were off the track, we slowly drove away. Just before we got back to the lodge we saw a male kudu. On our game drive we did not see any other vehicles, which made us feel like we had the place ... read more

Geo: -24.1511, 30.9588The last week of my life has been quite crazy and emotional. Yesterday was my last day of work at Jaci's Lodges. I had worked there for three and a half years, beginning as Front of House and soon after progressing to an Assistant Manager. Just over a month ago I handed in my resignation and spent the last few days packing and selling things that I wouldn't be taking with me. In less than a week I was permanently moving back home, to Australia. This morning Paul and I are on our way north. For the next four nights we were staying at Maninghi Lodge. It is on the Oliphants River in the Balule Game Reserve. We were self catering and stopped along the way to buy food and drinks. The drive to the ... read more

Geo: -28.4791, 29.9289This morning I couldn't resist having another sleep in. When I did wake up I made myself a cup of tea, put the robe on and sat outside on the deck. Here I watched birds hop about. Then just like yesterday morning, a male Tree Agama appeared. They are such colourful reptiles. I spotted him on a nearby rock, probably warming himself up. After a little while I went back into our room and started to pack. After brunch today we were leaving Nambiti Game Reserve as the trip has come to an end. Later this afternoon we were dropping Juliane and Max back at the airport. The others then returned from the morning game drive. On the way into the main lodge for brunch I spotted another male Tree Agama. This one was ... read more

Geo: -28.4719, 29.9399I was lazy this morning and choose to have a sleep-in instead of getting up at 5:30 and going for the morning game drive. I got up at a bit after 9, made a cup of tea, had a look at the view outside (in case there were any animals visible) then drank my tea in bed. Eventually I got up, I didn't want to still be in bed when they returned from the game drive. It was now 9:30 and they should be back soon. While I waited, I sat on the deck, read some of my book and observed the many different birds hopping about. In between pages I noticed a colourful male Tree Agama with a blue head. Then I put my book down and began to stalk it with my ... read more
