Geo: -24.7435, 26.2573This afternoon the lodge was quiet, so a few staff members went for a small game drive. Declan drove Jaci, Jan, Manny, Paul and myself. We didn't go very far when we spotted a pair of white rhinos in the distance. We drove off the main track to a smaller track to get a bit closer to them. We were able to watch them from a close distance for a few minutes and then they turned around and walked off into the bush. Declan drove back to the main track. Jaci requested that we have a look at Jamala's waterhole. Jamala is one of the many lodges in the game reserve. As we drove towards the waterhole, a white rhino was approaching it. We watched it walk along the water's edge. Then it drank ... read more

Geo: -24.7435, 26.2573This evening we had no guests, so I went with Paul for a drive to pick up staff from one of the gates. On the way out of the lodge, we stopped in the wetlands to briefly watch some water buck. The water buck were enjoying standing knee deep in the mud, drinking and eating water grasses. We continued on and about thirty minutes later came to Vlei Pan - out of the best waterholes to see animals at. At that moment there were only wildebeest at the pan. We didn't want to stop just for wildebeest. A few kilometres along the road there was a rotting carcass of a giraffe that was killed a few days ago by a lion. As we quietly approached the carcass (which was just off the main road) ... read more

Geo: -24.7435, 26.2573This afternoon I went for a small drive with Roel and Paul. We wanted to have a look at how much damaged the fire had done to the bush. Although it was hard to tell how much damage had been done by only driving on the few roads. There were some trees still burning, their trunks alight with embers. I hope there were not many animals injured. We drove over a little hill and saw a small herd of breeding elephants. They were a bit cautious of us. We watched the elephants, which ranged in age and therefore size as well. The littlest one was staying right by its mother's side. I really feel for elephants at this time of the year, as there does not seem to be much food for them. It ... read more

Geo: -24.7435, 26.2573This morning the team met at our lodge at 7am to continue bird counting. They started the day by walking around the lodge. While they were doing this, I slept in - it was too cold to get up just to walk around the lodge. We left the lodge at about 8am. The guides had a route in mind. As we drove along we came across a crash of white rhinos - which are always special to see. Just off the main road it was reported on the radio earlier on, that the coalition of 4 cheetahs were resting under a tree. These cheetahs were released into the park a few months ago and this was the first time that I have seen them. We were just a few metres from them. The cheetahs ... read more

Geo: -24.7435, 26.2573Today I took half a day off work to join Paul and some other guides in the park for a birding competition that started this afternoon. We were meeting the other teams at the airstrip at 2pm to go through the rules. There was one other team at the airstrip, each team of mixed staff from various lodges, there were also two other teams from the other side of the park that could not make it to the meeting. In our team there were five of us. We chatted for a few minutes and then drove off in different directions. I was honestly more interested in seeing animals than counting the different bird species. We didn't drive very far at all before Paul stopped the car and everyone else got excited about the birds. They ... read more

Geo: -20.5573, 28.5126This morning we had planned to leave by 7am. We slowly packed our belongings into the cars and in-between we took photos of the beautiful scenery. The scenery consisted of various rock formations, as they slowly came into view as the sun rose over the hill. It is a shame that we were not able to spend two nights here as originally planned, as the chalet was in such a beautiful, peaceful location with a great outdoor barbecue area - a nice place to have sundowners. We also had a great view of Maleme dam. In the end we left just after 8am. I was on the lookout for klipspringers- as they are found on rocks. As soon as we drove out of the campsite I saw a klipspringer running across the road. It ... read more

Geo: -20.5573, 28.5126I had such a great night's sleep. It was so good to sleep in a bed and have plenty of hot running water. Unfortunately we could not enjoy a sleep-in as we had organised a day trip today. We left the B&B just after 8am. The drive to Matopos National Park took us about half an hour. It was about a twenty minute drive to the reception of the camp ground. Along the way we drove past beautiful scenery, mostly because of the interesting rock formations. Especially picturesque was the view of the lake where the water was ever so still. We were running late, so didn't have as much time as we would have liked to enjoy the view. The guide wasn't at the reception yet, so we had some time to bargain ... read more

Geo: -20.1678, 28.5813This morning we got up early and found it difficult to pack up. We were comfortable here and not ready to leave the wilderness. Finally we were packed and we slowly drove out of the national park. We left the camp site at about 6am. I rode in Francois' car as that 70km corrugated road was not going to be comfortable in our car, with the lack of functioning front shock absorbers. I was hoping for a few more interesting sightings on our way out. Twenty minutes into our drive, I noticed a large tree that had been knocked down since we last drove past this area. Standing behind the tree to the right hand side was a large adult elephant. It was enjoying the leaves and I hope feeling guilty - 1 less ... read more

Geo: -15.9455, 29.3115This morning we all went for a game drive. The first interesting sighting that we had was a pair of male impalas that were play fighting by hitting each other with their horns. They briefly stopped to look at us and then continued fighting. A little while later we got out of the car to go for a short walk around a little water pan that was full of water plants. I was a bit concerned that there could be hippos hiding in the water among the plants, so I frequently scanned the water and was on the look-out for a charging hippo. Luckily the only animals we saw was a family of ducks.Continuing on we saw a lonely bull elephant that was not bothered by our presence. For the next hour we did ... read more

Geo: -15.9455, 29.3115This morning we were woken up by the sound of many noisy hippos grunting. Paul, John and Francois left the camp site at 7am for a walk through the bush. After my last walking experience with them, there was no way that I was going to go through that again. Instead I went for a short two hour game drive.I drove towards Vundu Point, along the way I saw a couple of baboons grooming each other but would stop when I stopped to watch them, impalas, various birds and a small breeding herd of elephants. I turned around and drove along a track that I had not been on before. It was a very quiet road- no animals to see or any other vehicles. It was also difficult to see where the track was ... read more
