Today, after waking up, we looked at our pedometer and we had walked 26,000 steps yesterday which equated about 10 miles. Legs feeling like Jello, I convinced Ralph to go back to the Tsukiji Fish Market with me. We ended up having the lunch for champions as I ate about every kind of fish the restaurant had to offer. After sushi, we wanted to head down to a city called Yokohama which was about 30 minutes away by subway. The city is a port city and the first Japanese city to host a foreign port. We ended walking to The Yokohama Landmark Tower which is the 2nd tallest building in Japan, we got a quick view of the city from up there and again, I learned that I should not be up that high. We then ... read more

8AM, woke up and figured we might as well check out the Tsukiji Fish Market which hauls in fresh fish everyday at 5AM. (You can bid on the fish against the store owners if you wake up early enough at 3AM to line up, you might get beaten up and fed to the fishes, so Caveat Emptor). Upon reaching there, it was packed. Packed with people and stores hauling in fresh fish and catches of the day. We settled on one hidden restaurant that served Don bowls which are selected fish served over rice. I had the chance to get the Salmon Bowl and it was definitely the best sashimi I have ever had. The market has many different variations of sushi and seafood if you're a fan. Part of traveling is eating different foods, so ... read more

Our day started at 10:30AM today and I was excited to see what the city has to offer. Our first destination was a place called The Tokyo SkyTree, not only is this a must place to go see for the view, but Japan is Star Wars crazy. I thought the U.S. was ready for the movie, but Japan will transform their tallest structure into a lightsaber. (Step it up, guys) Some fun facts that I learned about the Tokyo Skytree: I'm scared of heights. I'm really scared of heights. Why are my pants warm? The Skytree Tower is the tallest in the world and the tallest in Japan. When we stepped in the elevator, we were moving at 10 m/s or 32.8 feet/second. Our ears popped and the cold air would hit your face and before ... read more

20 hours later, I finally made it to the Royal Park Hotel in Tokyo. The 12.5 hour plane ride was pretty rough as I sat in the middle seat of the middle row between my friend and this spawn Satan of a child that couldn't sit still, kicked and punched everything that moved. No wonder her mother was nowhere to be found, she probably was like "Allison, you sit right here, but Mommy is in First Class cabin if you need me." It was about 11:30PM after getting out of the airport and we still had about a 30 minute train ride to get to the hotel. First thing that I noticed about Japan is how clean it is. There is absolutely zero trash on the streets, no overfilled trash cans, let alone gum stains on ... read more

Today was the last day of the residential and I probably got sick at the best time. I woke up sick with a sore throat and I guess it was bound to happen. We had free time from about 12:30PM to 7PM and I did a smart thing by sleeping. The class had dinner and we split off into groups. I had decided to meet up with some Hong Kong MBA friends to get shown around the town. On a side note, every year, Hong Kong hosts a Rugby tournament known as the Rugby 7 and there is a massive influx of people from Australia, England, etc. that come here during the weekend to join in the festivals. So we decided to try LKF on a Friday. LKF = a district where its just bars after ... read more

Today was the last full day of the residential and it felt somewhat good to complete it on a good note. We had presentations in the morning and I went exploring in the inner city today and my Cantonese is terrible. I had to draw a map for strangers to point my back in the same direction. We only had one company visit today and that was Cathay Pacific. This company is an airline, but it also does commercial transport of freight. We got to walk around this 220,000 square meters site and there was so much logistics involved in a cargo site like this. They had a cold room where they would store perishable goods and I stood in a -20 degrees chamber for 30 seconds and it was awesome. Sorry, Cathay Pacific did not ... read more

Last 6AM of this week as the class drove towards Shenzhen, immigration stop, blah blah blah. Today was different though. We went further into mainland China and there definitely is a different vibe. (see pictures) The places seemed a few years behind from Hong Kong and the immediate city of Shenzhen. Buildings just seemed a bit off and the infrastructure just was not all there. (see pictures) Our first company was Payton Technology and their parent company is Kingston. If that name sounds familiar, the company multinational computer technology corporation that develops, manufactures, sells and supports flash memory products and other related memory products. They gave us a tour of the facility of how to make memory and circuit boards. But it wasn't the biggest surprise... Our second company was TCL Multimedia and the company designs, ... read more

6AM. The alarm rings and I cannot believe I have a 2 hour bus ride, We had two classmates that showed up late to the bus and they had to sing for us. I included their American Idol tryouts here. I apologize in advance, but the videos are sideways as the phone was held sideways. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0hM9G_NEc9JLUpTcFdFdGZQcTg/edit?usp=sharing GUN https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0hM9G_NEc9JOGw5YjRLeDdDWnM/edit?usp=sharing CLIFTON So we drove towards Shenzhen and we had to go through TWO immigration checkpoints. The Hong Kong side was all happy and loud, and as soon as you walk into the mainland China side, everything is organized, color oriented, quiet, and very strict. No smiles here and the officials went through each passport immaculately. NO PICTURES HERE. Day two began at 9AM in the conference room with 2 presenters on air and trucking freight industry in Hong Kong. Two people came to speak to us from the Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong Council about building additional runways at the airport to sustain growth in this industry as airports in Guangdong and Shenzhen were their main competitors. Costs of transporting freight has risen due to the exceptional rising wages in Hong Kong. The next individual to speak was Frank Lavin, CEO of Export Now. I recommend you looking him up via Wikipedia and his CV will definitely stand out. His company transitions American products into China E-commerce and trade facilitation. I know. That was the last boring part about this blog. Our first company visit was Li & Fung, they source hard goods ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island » The Peak March 22nd 2014

Today was the first day of school here in Hong Kong as I will be here for the next 7 days visiting companies, touring facilities, and trying not to eat everything in site. The day began at 9AM as all 45 students huddled into a conference room waiting to be debriefed of the day. We had 2 expats come and speak to us about Hong Kong history and opportunities, and it was strange. I had two NON-CHINESE people telling me how to live in Hong Kong and be able to "fit-in" this lifestyle. Its almost like asking Kim Kardashian how to be a model citizen. Or asking Dane Cook to be funny. Or Adele NOT to be whiny. Its just weird. Group meetings ended around 12PM and we headed to get Dim Sum. After Dim Sum, ... read more
