Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo Caves February 28th 2013

Ahhhh finally a great nights sleep! Our little cabin was warm, comfy and quiet, which made the 7.15am start a bit easier. Our first stop was a refreshing walk along the old gold mining tunnels at Karangahake, the rocky streams and chain bridges made for some nice pictures. We then stopped at the town of Paeroa, home of the world famous 'L&P' lemon sparkling drink - thought to be a great hangover cure. Our final destination for the day was Waitomo caves, we both chose slightly different activities so parted ways for the afternoon. I chose the Black Labyrinth tour where you descend down into the cave and sit in a donut while floating underneath the amazing glow worms that light up the ceiling. There were a few ... read more

No dramas on the bus this morning thank God! We rocked up at Hot Water Beach at around 2.30pm and headed straight down to the beach. Unfortunately so did 100 other people! We didn't succeed in finding our own hot spot to dig so we waited for a family to depart theirs and swooped in for the take-over. All the pleasure without any of the hard work digging the hole! The water was pretty warm, too warm in some spots. We stayed in a holiday park and managed to bag ourselves a private cabin so hopefully a better nights sleep than the past few days. Bailey's bit: To answer yesterday's question the answer was no. 2 of our fellow dorm shares went out and returned at 3am (1st disturbance), then they started snoring (2nd), then at ... read more

After check-out we rented bikes and cycled out towards Whaitangi, this is the spot where the treaty was signed between the Maori chiefs and the British. The meaning of the original treaty is thought to be very controversial and is still debated in court to this date. Before boarding the bus we had a quick scoot around the town centre; Pahaia is a quaint beachside town and most importantly had TipTop ice cream! The bus to Auckland took just over 3 hours, so we arrived at the hostel just in time for dinner. Bailey's bit: Pahaia is a small quaint seaside village whose main industry is tourism so holiday homes, hotels and restaurants galore! Today's ice cream flavours were; Cat: Pure passion (fruit), James: Orange chocolate chip and rum & raisin. All 3 very good, we ... read more

A 6am start to an incredibly stressful morning! After being told we had secured places on the bus it turned out that actually only one of us had been confirmed and the other was still on the wait list! Luckily 9 no-shows meant everyone got on the bus up to the Bay of Islands. I think we were still in 'Fiji time' because all the activity and accommodation booking sheets were stressing me out! Upon reaching the Bay of Islands we managed to chill out a bit and hopped aboard an afternoon boat cruise out to the bay. We saw a pod of 20 bottle nose dolphins - they are much bigger than any dolphins I've seen before. The boat also took us out to the famous 'hole in the rock' but due to choppy waves ... read more

Apparently Auckland is a party hard weekend destination - the clubs were still going when James went out for his run! We decided to spend the morning at the Auckland museum and walked from the hostel to the 'domain'. We'd agreed to meet a friend of mine (Henry, who I met while travelling in America) after the museum and he picked us up and took us for lunch. We had the most amazing mussels for lunch; they were huge green lip mussels! Henry was a fab tour guide and drove us to Mt Eden, Davenport, Bastion point and One Tree Hill where we got some great views of Auckland. Later, he turned into the hostess with the mostess by giving us BBQ NZ lamb for dinner and selecting a few NZ treats for us to enjoy: ... read more

Goodbye to wet wet Fiji and hello to sunny Auckland! Just a three hour flight this time and a quick transfer from the airport to the city. We fully engaged backpacker mode and headed straight to the supermarket for dinner. After our sausages and mash we walked up to Albert Park for the lantern festival. The park was heaving with people all there for the amazing lantern designs and the Asian food stalls. Our favourite lantern design was the zoo - the giraffes head even moved! Baileys bit: It was a little unfortunate about the weather we had in Fiji, the rain seemed to stop during the night but as soon as we woke it started again. After the stories we heard about swimming with the dolphins in NZ we invested in a replacement waterproof camera ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands » Yasawa Island February 22nd 2013

We managed to recruit lots of the newcomers at Nabua for the cave trip so we were able to go before our departure. Plus, it had stopped raining and blue skies had appeared. The boat ride up to the caves was about 40mins through some pretty exposed bits of sea up past Yasawa Island. A small group of tour guides greeted us and took us inside the caves. The water was cool and the limestone formation was pretty spectacular. To get to the second cave (the spitting cave) you have to swim underwater for a couple of metres and enter the pitch black cave. These caves were also used in the film Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields. After our lunch we boarded the long boat which took us over to the catamaran. Five and a half ... read more

Unfortunately we awoke to rain (it hadn't stopped all night!) and the forecast for the day wasn't great. We had booked onto the caves trip but a minimum of 5 guests from the local resorts are needed to run the trip and the rain had put everyone off so it was cancelled - hopefully more people will want to go tomorrow. So instead we decided to do the Nacula hike up into the hills. There were some great views from up there and the land really is untouched. After lunch 10 more guests arrived, along with 8 travel agents (resort inspection). The rain really started pouring down and so it was back to chess and basket weaving! Guess what - I beat James at chess for the first time ever! Dinner was fab, Nabua lodge serves ... read more

We didn't want to leave barefoot lodge this morning. We'd had such a good couple of days on the island but we were excited about seeing another island too. We boarded the large boat heading north, but encountered an engine failure about an hour from our destination! This meant a very slow cruising speed of 6 knots and a little longer than expected to get to our next resort - Nabua lodge. We'd come through a lot of rain on the boat and this continued for the whole day! I'm not gonna lie I started to get very bored this afternoon as the activities get a little limited in the pouring rain! The food at Nabua lodge has been great so far and best of all the local tea shop bought over some delicious chocolate orange ... read more

After 9 hours sleep we thought it best that we get up and breathe the morning air before breakfast. There's a short hike up to a lookout point and so while James ran back and forth a couple of times, I walked up to the top and back. Breakfast was good and we had these delicious banana scones. The morning activity was coconut jewellery making, and it's amazing what you can do with a coconut shell and some sand paper! The rest of the morning was spent hanging around in a hammock, sun bathing on the beach or swimming in the sea. We booked in with Reef Safari for a couple of dives this afternoon and after speaking to some other divers we decided to got out to the caves for our first dive. Our second ... read more
