There were a couple of things we couldn't squeeze in on our first trip down, Queensland's largest island Fraser Island and the Turtle Rookery at Mon Repos. So we headed back up north in Maurice (our trusty campervan). We had a quick stop off at the Glass House Mountains in the morning; these amazing mountains are the peaks of once volcanoes that now just suddenly appear out out of the dense forest as you're driving along. We arrived in Hervey Bay in the afternoon and set up camp. We had a bit of a relax with a quick game of chess in the pool (Budapest style!) and sorted some laundry etc. Tomorrow we have a jam-packed day of activities! Bailey's bit: So after the cliffhanger last night we woke early, as we hadn't closed all the ... read more

A couple of the historical buildings in Brisbane were shut for renovation (City Hall and the Museum of Brisbane), so we headed down to the botanical gardens - we seem to find ourselves in these in every city! James had to head off to collect the campervan so I continued through the gardens and walked down towards the south bank park and beach (a fake one, full of (real) children). I continued my walk along the river path under the pretty floral canopies, trying to get in shade wherever possible (it was so hot!). Our campervan has been named Maurice, we thought this was an apt name given his age (he has a cassette player!?!). Maurice will be our home for the next 26 days! After playing around with all Maurice's fixtures and fittings we headed ... read more

Our final destination in the car (Diane Von Furstenberg) was Brisbane, and after 2400 miles in total we made it in plenty of time to the airport car rental. It certainly felt very odd being in a big city, where you have to pay attention to the road signs, because there is more than one road! Brisbane has a really nice feel about it, busy but not too busy. We spent the afternoon at SouthBank cultural centre looking around the Museum of Queensland. Bailey's bit: I think today will be the one and only time I will be ushered out of a museum because it is closing! Interesting exhibit on Queensland including the spearing of an explorer by an aboriginal! Our little i20 served us well, hopefully the campervan will do the same if not better. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mooloolah January 16th 2013

After a great nights sleep in our luxury apartment (but feeling a little stiff from surfing) we headed off early to walk along to the Sand Blow for views of Rainbow Beach and Double Island. The Sand Blow is essentially a huge sand dune that runs down onto the beach, weaving its way in between the coloured cliffs. The views extend all the way over to Fraser Island. Our next stop was an hour down the road to the local Eumundi markets. There were hundreds of stalls and crowds of people - the busiest place we've been yet! Our afternoon was then spent at Noosa National Park, walking along the coastal path and spotting the wildlife. We saw our first Koala (sleeping in a tree), a huge lizard (lace monitor) and possums. We booked a hostel ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Agnes Water January 15th 2013

Agnes water is a pretty little town just south of the more well-known town of 1770. It's the most northerly point in Queensland where the waves get big enough to surf and is a great place for beginners... So we enrolled in surf school and headed down to the beach with our instructor and class-mates. Surfing is one of those just try and try again until you succeed sports, and after 3 hours most people in the class had managed to stand and ride a wave to the beach. James was pretty good and after a bit of help from the instructor I was up on the board too! I swallowed a good few litres of sea water and got a few knocks and bruises during the class - but had lots of fun doing so. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Agnes Water January 14th 2013

Yup the title pretty much sums up our ,day! A massive drive from Airlie, through Mackay, Rockhampton and down to Agnes water. We spotted our first Kangaroos (or Kangaroo-roo-roo-roo-roo if you're trying to keep James awake behind the wheel) and later had them for dinner - luckily not the same ones. Our Kangaroo burgers were delicious with salad, a crusty bap and corn on the cob! Bailey's bit: To keep you entertained on the long drive there is the occasional road trivia to get you thinking. the one and only question: what is the highest mountain in queensland? A: mount butler farrer. As we approached Rockhampton the radio informed us of a bush fire near the coast. Although we were no where near it the smoke drifted over the road and caused quite a haze! Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays » Daydream Island January 13th 2013

The best way to experience the Whitsunday's is by sailing; not only did we pick a sailboat but we picked a 1946 tall ship as our sailboat! The 'Derwent Hunter' has an incredible history in Australia and we had a fantastic day aboard. We helped the crew with the sails and driving the boat. The day trip included two snorkelling sessions and we finally got the chance to swim with turtles. They were most likely hawksbill and while some were fairly small we saw a huge one too. The turtles were on Langford Reef which also has a beautiful beach just popping out of the water amid the other islands. The Whitsunday's are beautiful, the sea is warm and a perfect Turquoise colour... book your flights now! Bailey's bit: An amazing day sailing the high seas, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach January 12th 2013

Again another day of driving, this time we covered twice the distance! Before hitting the road we had a quick wander down to the beach itself. Mission beach was the first stretch of land hit by the Grade 5 Cyclone Yasi in 2011, but it seems to have recovered well. The trip from Mission beach to Townsville took approximately 3 hours and we arrived around lunchtime. Townsville 'strand' bears a striking resemblance to the esplanade in Cairns! After another 3 hour drive we arrived in Airlie beach, a very popular stop for backpackers and also the gateway to The Whitsundays. At each stop we now have to make the decision between YHA hostels or NOMADS hostels - we've stayed on a number of both, but YHA is winning on service at the moment! Baileys bit: Even ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mareeba January 11th 2013

Today involved quite a bit of driving but we did take a couple of detours on our way. First stop was the Granite Gorge, situated about 20 minutes outside the small town Mareeba. Here wallaby's will feed from your hand, we saw a couple of young ones and a tiny one still in the pouch! Then we were back on the road to Yungaburra in the hope of seeing a Platypus (no such luck!). Our next stops were a beautiful swimming lake (Lake Eacham) and Millaa Millaa falls. We arrived at our final destination, Mission Beach in time for dinner and an early night. Bailey's bit: For the first time on this trip we woke up and had no idea about where to head next. A guy in the hostel gave some good recommendations and so ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns January 10th 2013

An early start to board TUSA 6, our dive vessel for the day. The boat and crew were great and we arrived at Thetford Reef for our first dive around 10. Having only just qualified, we decided to go with a dive master, one other couple came with us (they'd done their PADI in freezing waters up by Hull .. crazy). Larissa our dive master was fab and we had three very smooth dives. I was so much more confident than in Thailand and a sea sickness tablet meant James felt fine all day. The water was calm and really warm and the visibility was perfect. There were so many fish, giant clams and crazy sea creatures on the reef. We saw a turtle on the surface but he swam off before we got in the ... read more
