The rain continued on into the night but was starting to show signs of clearing in the morning. We had a bit of a lie-in and spent the morning updating the blog (it had been neglected for 10 days or so). In the afternoon we jumped on the ferry from Manly to the Circular Quay and headed off to the Hyde Park Barracks Museum. As most people will know, the first people sent from England to the Australian colony were in fact mostly convicts; these people had their sentences changed from death to transportation for 7, 14 years or life. The Hyde Park Barracks Musuem provides insight into the daily lives of the convicts arriving in NSW and their route to freedom. It allows you to do a surname search using the historical database to find ... read more

So on the one day that Steffan and Hannah were able to show off their new city to us it rained ALL day! We still headed from manly into the city and opted for the Museum of Sydney. We explored some of the other buildings in the city including the Queen Victoria building, which has a magnificent clock, and the customs house with its model-sized version of Sydney CBD under the glass floor. The evening consisted of a catch-up with home & away and neighbours and a delicious quiche dinner made by Hannah. Bailey's bit: It seems we were very lucky on our trip down the coast. Cyclone Oswald has made ground fall in north eastern Australia causing damage and severe flooding. Bundaberg, where we were only 5 or so days ago, is now at points ... read more

We awoke to a chorus of animal sounds, mostly cockatoos with the odd bark and snort! Alison, Simon, Charlotte & William live in a beautiful spot in Sun Valley and share their garden with lots of four-legged and feathered friends. Lola the pig is so cute! Unfortunately we also awoke to rain which meant the visibility wouldn't be great at the Blue Mountain hot spots. Un-deterred by the rain, Alison and Simon took us on a walk to Wentworth Falls and the mist cleared for a few photo opportunities. We weren't able to see the three sisters - so it's a good job we did that jigsaw you gave us last year mum! After a wonderful day in the Blue Mountains and a scrumptious breakfast and pie lunch we headed back towards Sydney to stay with ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling Harbour January 26th 2013

The 26th January is celebrated as 'Australia Day' marking the first day the ships arrived with the convicts aboard, back in 1788. Think 'queens jubilee' or 'independence day' -type celebrations, with flags, music, food etc. We caught the train from Emu Plains to central Sydney arriving mid-morning and headed up to The Rocks and Darling Harbour for the celebrations. The main programme started at 7pm with numerous speeches and the ships and tall ship parade around the harbour. This was followed by a pretty spectacular firework and light display finale! After a long day on our feet we caught the train back to pick up the campervan and had a brief drive to Sun Valley to visit my cousins Alison & Simon (who had kindly taken us in for the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Hunter Valley January 25th 2013

Today I had to wipe my 'I only drink Pinot Grigio and it has to usually cost more than £8 but be on a half price special' slate clean, or should I say palette clean! We headed into Australia's finest Hunter Valley for a vineyard tour and some wine tasting. We picked one of the oldest vineyards in the region, McWilliams Mount Pleasant and had a very interesting tour. We were able to pick a grape, see the wine-making process in action and learn all the tips and techniques that they use. The Hunter Valley is famous for its Semillon (white wine), Merlot and Shiraz red wines. We had a very comprehensive tasting session. Grandad - James highly recommends the Mount Pleasant Rose Hill Shiraz! We also had a try of some sparkling wines and dessert ... read more

We had a fair distance to cover today in order to ensure we got to Sydney for Australia Day, so we had to make some decisions about where to stop! After a bit of lonely planet advice we opted for Coffs Harbour. We walked along the marina jetty out to Muttonbird Island, a small island where the seabirds 'Sea ' come to mate and rear their chicks on land. Around 12,000 of these birds nest on the island during this time of year and guess what... yup we didn't see a single one! We did however see a blue-tongued lizard, and we've decided he's single-handedly responsible for their disappearance. During the afternoon we covered quite a few more miles and planned to set up camp in a nearby nature reserve. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay January 23rd 2013

Given that we slept next to the motorway, it's not surprising that we were up at 6am. Luckily we hadn't been caught for 'illegal camping' and we headed to Byron Bay for some early morning beach action. James went for a run and I popped down to the beach to do some light exercising before breakfast. Byron Bay is known as the 'chilled hippy town'; it continually comes under threat by developers to turn it into another Surfers Paradise, but the residents put up a strong fight and there is not a single high-rise building. How long this will last, I'm not so sure! After a wander around the town and finally some free internet access we headed back to the beach for a swim and a brief sunbathe (we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Tweed Heads January 22nd 2013

The border crossing was much closer then we thought and we said a fond farewell to Queensland. We made our way down the coast to Tweeds head, had a quick stop off at Surfer's Paradise beach and went for a relaxing swim at nearby Currumbin Creek. The Gold Coast is famous for its surfing, and boy does the pacific ocean crash onto the beach with some big waves! I think we'll stick to the beginner waves! The coastal route around the area was really pretty and quite remote. We found a cute little beach with a headland walk up to Norries head and decided to stop there for dinner. We'd seen a lot of people camping at nearby rest area's; technically this is illegal but we thought we'd risk it for one night. We pulled over ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Redcliffe January 21st 2013

After a late night at the turtles we allowed ourselves a lie in and a leisurely breakfast. Our facilities were just about advanced enough to make pancakes, so it was Nutella pancakes for breakfast! The rest of the day was spent on the road, and we wanted to get close to Brisbane before dark. We stopped at a number of little beachfront towns on the way and decided to stay at Redcliffe - once the home of the Beegees! Given that we ended up staying so close to Brisbane we knew that this would be our last night in Queensland and tomorrow we would cross the border to New South Wales. Bailey's bit: After our mad dash to the turtles a few insects unfortunately met their fate on our windscreen, this meant we had to utilise ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island January 20th 2013

What a day - all 20 hours of it! We had a 6am start to jump on our pickup for the Fraser Island tour and we got the first ferry across to the island. We were greeted at the other side by a resident female dingo. Approximately 200 of these live wild on the island and even though they look like dogs, they can be pretty vicious and are actually Asian wolves. Our first stop on the island tour was to Central Station in the subtropical rainforest, once the base for the logging workers. The 75 mile beach on the island is the highway and we had a pretty bumpy ride as we raced along the shore - infact the tracks all over the island are sand, so the bumpy feeling was constant throughout the day. ... read more
