Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Westport March 10th 2013

We had the morning to relax on the beach and get some sunbathing in before the chill of the South Island sets in further down the coast. The drive to Westport took about 4 hours so we had a tiptop ice-cream stop half way in a town called Mercherson. Westport is a small coal mining town but after dinner we headed back on the bus towards the coast for a walk. It went dark really quickly but the path was fairly easy to follow, unfortunately we couldn't tell if the seals were just rocks or not! We all congregated on the beach for an hour or so before heading back to the hostel.Bailey's bit: The hour congregation in the beach wasn't everyone huddled together, our driver had lit a bonfire ... read more

Adventure is our middle name - today that translated into a 16km kayak trip around the national park. The three of us (plus Dave our guide) paddled the seas for a good four hours, with some beautiful stops along the way. We set off from the impressive sand spit at Bark Bay and our first stop was Pinnacle island to see the seal colony. There were a couple of seals sunning themselves on the rocks. We continued on to our lunch stop at Adele island (named by a French explorer, after his wife) and this was the best spot of the day. The beach was beautiful, clear waters and great views of the national park - plus the lunch provided was pretty tasty! We had a couple of other stops after lunch and our arms were ... read more

Two became three as Lizzie joined us on our trip to the South Island. We all took a sea-sickness tablet in case the 3.5hr cruise across the cook strait got a little rough. I'm convinced that they were just sleeping tablets as we all fell asleep for 2 hours. We managed to wake up for the best part of the journey and headed out onto the boat deck to soak in the splendour of Marlborough Sounds. We arrived into Kaiteriteri, the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park, early in the evening.Bailey's bit: Kaiteriteri is a small coastal town with a nice little beach, 1 camp site, bar, hostel and that's about it! We soaked up some late afternoon sun before cooking dinner and then being in bed before 10. ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington March 7th 2013

We managed to get out of bed a little earlier and headed into town for a smooch around. Although Wellington has the nickname Windy Welly, the weather has been superb - apparently this had been the case since Christmas. Our first stop was the Te Papa museum, which houses a diverse selection of exhibitions about New Zealand. Odd yet rather interesting was the preserved Colossal Squid accidentally brought to the surface by eating fishing bait around 10 years ago and given to the museum. After a couple of hours in the museum we ate lunch along the waterfront and walked along some of the main shopping streets towards the beehive (parliament building). Despite being the capital Wellington is still fairly small, clean and relatively quiet compared to its big sister Auckland. To make the most of ... read more

Ahh no noise all night - no snoring and no noisy drunk travellers! We had a great nights sleep and treated ourselves to a fairly relaxed morning in the apartment. After lunch we headed out towards town and decided to climb Mount Victoria to see the views of Wellington city. The city is clustered around the bay and there are some pretty suburbs just outside. In fact that evening we headed out to watch Liz play football at Eastbourne, a really quaint suburb over the other side of the bay. Liz' women's team were up against a local lads team and the girls did some great defending against the much larger and faster boys. There have recently been spottings of Orca and dolphins in the harbour - we'll look out for them from the ferry on ... read more

We had the morning to ourselves at River Valley and so James went for a run and a swim and I had a tootle around the grounds and along the river. It really is in the middle of nowhere but it has a nice homely feel to it. They were looking for travellers to stay there and work in return for free accommodation, food and horse trekking. I have to say I was tempted!! We were on our way to Wellington by 1pm and I was super excited about staying with Liz for the next few days. Upon arriving we bid our fellow travellers goodbye and wished them luck at the hostel as we headed off to the apartment. We'll be meeting back up with a number of them on Friday to head over to the ... read more

Pain! Serious thigh pain had set in from our walk yesterday and our bus driver informed us that we would be heading back towards the national park for more walking!! The waterfalls at the end of the long walk (Taranaki falls) were however really pretty and we stopped for a quick lunch break before getting back on the road. Upon our arrival at River Valley we quickly started preparing the group BBQ and our first job was to make 50 burgers. They were really yummy burgers if I do say so myself, and we had lots of compliments from the rest of the bus. Our sleeping arrangements were a little odd, we along with 30 other people were in the orgy room - essentially just a wide bench with mattresses running down alongside one another. There ... read more

Last night the hostel partied hard... We however did not as we had to begin our journey to the national park at 5.30am. I barely slept a wink but I think that may have been a mixture of the loud music and the adrenaline from the sky dive. We started the track at 7.00am and had a 10 hour walk ahead of us. Due to the volcanic eruption in August 2012 part of the original crossing is closed, therefore we opted for the 'highlights' walk which includes the famous Mount Doom from The Lord of the Rings. I can safely say that this was the hardest mountain I've ever climbed, but the views from the top were phenomenal. I particularly liked the emerald lakes, that looked beautiful amidst the brown volcanic soil. Infact if you picked ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo March 2nd 2013

I was still stuffed from the feast the night before so I skipped breakfast and hoped to burn some of it off on our morning walk. We headed to Te Puia gate to see some more Maori culture, thermal geysers and finally a pair of Kiwis! The geysers were huge, steam pours out all day long - a bit like a whale's spout. Kiwi's are nocturnal and highly endangered so there are small breeding centres throughout New Zealand. The chance of seeing one in the wild is really slim so we were pleased to see this happy pair of kiwis saving their species. We then got on the road to our next stop, Lake Taupo. We had a relaxing afternoon, with a casual 12,000ft skydive above the lake! It was a fantastic experience and was much ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua March 1st 2013

Another scenic walk to get our day off to a good start! The walk took us out to the Ruaki forrest & caves and we climbed through some little tunnels. We arrived in Rotorua around midday and had the afternoon to explore the city. Rotorua is one of three geothermal hotspots in the world, everywhere you look steam is coming out of the ground! We even saw a bit of pavement cracked with bubbling water coming out, scary stuff. These hotspots are usually mud pools with a horrible sulphur smell - the city smells like this permanently. We did a 3km walking tour around the city, aside from the smell the lake and museum buildings are beautiful. In the evening we went to a mauri village and concert with a huge buffet dinner. On the way ... read more
