North America » United States » Missouri » Kansas City March 4th 2015

Just a few more long drives and I would be home and I can consider this trip a success. Left my final hostel of the trip, Hostel 66 at 7:30AM and mentally prepped myself for a 12 - 13 hour drive to Kansas City Missouri. I must admit I was already exhausted before starting just thinking about it. 2 hours in I made my first stop at Denny's. As far as I can tell I have been to a Denny's in basically every state on this trip. Standard breakfast with juice and it was tasty but I will say the waitress I had was quite rude to all her customers. She kept trying to hurry everyone along by coming back every 30 seconds and asked if "You ready yet". I didn't mind too much but other ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Grand Canyon March 3rd 2015

This would not be my best idea of the trip. Driving to the Grand Canyon with limited sleep into a snow storm. I had actually been warned off by various people back home but I decided it was worth the risk. I left the hostel at 5AM. It was a nice hostel but not overly friendly and I do prefer hostels have a friendly atmosphere. I drove on the same route that the bus took yesterday. There was a storm coming in later that day but it was not expected to hit until early afternoon and I was hoping to reach the Grand Canyon and get out before the storm hit. 4 hours later I reached the Grand Canyon at 10AM (Time zone change). There are surprising number of hotels, motels and other accommodations right next ... read more

Today I would be going to one of the key spots of my tour, THE GRAND CANYON. My ride was scheduled to be there at 5:30AM and I almost missed as I somehow slept through my alarm at 5AM and woke up at 5:25AM. After some frantic dressing I met my ride which was a small mini bus. It went around to various casinos and pickup other passengers. We were than taken to a parking lot where the actual bus was waiting. The bus was half full and consisted mostly of Asian tourists and a scattering of other people. We stopped first at the Hoover dam and took pictures there. The Hoover dam is an impressive display of human engineering. We had about 15 minutes at the dam before we got on the bus and headed ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas March 1st 2015

Left Yosemite at 5AM in the snow and rain. I was sorry the park was a wash because I was really looking forward to it. The drive down was both challenging and dangerous in the dark. If you want an extreme drive go down from Yosemite in the dark during winter. It would be an 8.5 hour drive to Las Vegas. It is not exactly my favourite city but I figure it is a place you should visit at least once. The drive through Northern California and Nevada is good and the Mojave desert is desolate place. Case in point when my GPS showed I was crossing the Mojave river I saw just an empty dusty riverbed. I got my first view of the Las Vegas Strip once I hit the city. It is a dizzying ... read more

Today my trip would be half over. Every day after today I would be closer to home. I reluctantly left Ocean Front hostel in San Diego as it was the best hostel I would stay at on this trip. Traffic was light considering what I was expecting for Southern California and I made good time all the way to the base of mountain near Yosemite. At this point the roads narrow and go up a winding mountain route. I lowered the gear on my car and drove very slowly up the mountain. It was slow going and the roads were slippery because it had started to snow. I got to Yosemite hostel and checked in. It was deserted as the one in St Louis and I was informed they weren't expecting any tourist until a few ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Diego » Ocean Beach February 27th 2015

Left hostel at 7AM on way to Tijuana and San Diego. My left foot had been hurting the day before and I was planning on visiting a pharmacy before heading out but Zaina who is a doctor advised me to elevate my leg as I slept. That really helped because my leg felt much better after 1 night. Driving through the desert away from Phoenix I made good time but when I hit California the gas prices jumped to the same as Canada $1/liter. I was surprised about this until I figured out that it discouraged people from Mexico from coming up and taking gasoline down to Mexico where the prices are high. Driving through Southern California is surprisingly challenging because the mountains are so high and the highways go right up the mountains. The engine ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Phoenix February 26th 2015

Woke in my own room for the first time in a week and took a minute to realize where I was. Got breakfast at Ihop before driving out. Next meal would be in about 5 hours or so when I get to Phoenix. Driving through New Mexico and Arizona can be some of the loneliest driving you can do. It felt like I was driving through a scene from red dead redemption. I think I even saw the same mountain range from the game. Driving through a desert can really make you reflect on your life as you have so much time to think. I got to Phoenix around 2:30PM and put in a message to my local friend Zaina that I made it. We arrange for a meetup later that evening. Hostel for this evening ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Carlsbad February 25th 2015

Today I will be going hundreds of feet underground in the form of Carlsbad Caverns. One of my earliest memories was reading an entry in a fact book about Carlsbad Cavern. It is the deepest natural cavern in the world and was created when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone. Native American artifacts have been found deep in the caverns so human beings have been exploring the caverns for thousands of years. It is an 8 hour drive from Austin to Carlsbad so I left at 5:30AM. I stopped for breakfast at a small Texas town called Sonora which is also the name of the desert I was driving in as well. I must admit I felt out of place in a room full of Texans in their boots and big hats with me in shorts ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Austin February 24th 2015

Early morning drive to Austin so I got up at 6AM and prepped. I was giving a ride to Naveen that day as he was heading to Austin as well. I would have given a ride to an Irish guy as well but apparently he thought I was leaving at 7PM instead of 7AM so he had already bought a flight to Austin. Roads were mostly clear this point and the ice ended about 50km south of Dallas. Drive to Austin took about 3 hours and we were going to a hostel called Drifter's Jack. It was recommended by multiple people so I wanted to give it a try. Austin has a reputation as a weird liberal bastion in conservative Texas so I was curious to see it. We got to Austin in good time around ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Dallas February 23rd 2015

Woke up at the hostel and checked the weather report. The ice storm did a lot of damage to Dallas and it was advised to stay off the road. I went out to take a look at my car. It was encased in ice and I had to use my ice scraper to shatter the ice while I set the heater to the highest level. Took a bit of time but I cleared the ice. I had spoken to my local friend Jillian at this point and we arrange a meetup at her place for pizza. I was considering heading into Dallas to look around but there was really nothing I wanted to see so I held off. So I have no pictures of Dallas landmarks. First time I ventured out was to drive Salira to ... read more
