Today I would start in Bangkok and by the late evening I would be in Siem Reap Cambodia. I had until 4pm in Bangkok and I had a few options for the day. I could have taken a well reviewed food tour or do some shopping and go to chinatown to try the wolfpack trail. I decided to eat first before I made my decision. This hostel did not provide breakfast but the 7 Eleven nearby had various baked goods. So my breakfast that morning was a orange bun with some fanta drink. Not the healthiest breakfast you can have but what the hell I am on vacation. Over breakfast I opted for to do some shopping and Chinatown. I couldn't book the food tour through the hostel and that was a disappointment because hostels are ... read more

Next hiccup of the trip. I had told the hostel that I would leaving early and they assured me someone would be waiting for me. Surprise, no one was there. I left my sheets and key at the door and lost my key deposit :(. Flight path for today would take me from London to Helsinki to Bangkok. Taking the tube from central London to Heathrow only costs 4 pounds and takes about an hour or so. First flight was with British Airways and was uneventful 3 hours to Helsinki. I had a few hours in Helsinki and I decided to count that as having visited Helsinki (Take That Christine). Airport in Helsinki is very close to the city so wouldn't take that long to get into the city. I will do an actual visited to ... read more

I woke up at the Duke of York Hostel still feeling sleepy because I had not caught up yet to the local time (Lousy Jetlag). My roommates were still asleep so I went downstairs and ate some cereal that the hostel provides as a free breakfast. To save money I have a habit of booking hostels that serve breakfast and loading up as much possible. Confession here, I will smuggle out fruits and granola bars if they are provided so I can eat those later. Anyway I went back upstairs and met some of my roommates. Mostly Aussies and 1 English lady. I apparently had a conversation them last night when they had gotten in late. I had a vague recollection it but mostly it was drunk talk from their side and sleepy talk from my ... read more

i was prepared for my trip and had brought my luggage to my workplace so that I wouldn't have to drive back to my apartment. Company security was nice enough to allow me to park my car in the parking lot where it would be safe. I was working that day to save myself a vacation day. Time went quickly until around 3PM when I got a text message from British Airways advising me my plane would be at least an hour late due to the fact the plane was late in arriving from London. That was bad news for me because I was on a tight schedule when I land. I had calculated I had enough time to get out of the airport and drop my luggage at the hostel before making a train north ... read more

I woke up in my hostel bed refreshed. Sleeping in a hostel is a hit and miss. Sometimes the beds are comfortable and sometimes not. You also don't know what kind of roommates you are going to get and who will come in at what time. This time I was exhausted enough that I went right to sleep and slept through the night. Breakfast was provided by the hostel and consisted of various cereals, bread and pancake mix. I needed to check out before I left for the day and I was waiting for the hostel clerk to show up so I could ask where I could store my backpack for the day. To pass the time I chatted with a friend on Facebook who was apparently madly jealous I was in NYC. I didn't feel ... read more

I got into New York City at 6:30AM completely exhausted and not in a good mood. Bus arrived at the Port Authority which is right in the middle of Manhattan. I couldn't check into my hostel until 11AM so I could wander around Manhattan until than. My first mistake was to eat at the first breakfast place I ran into. I will say that Mama's kitchen is a terrible place to eat. The food was expensive and the omelet, toast and coffee was just terrible. The bacon was just about the hardest bacon I have ever eaten and I am really disappointed with the meal. So I condemn Mama's kitchen for such a terrible meal. OK that is enough about my breakfast. I didn't have a fixed plan for today beyond my broadway show at 2pm ... read more

Well the time has arrived. I didn't have a lot of money for this trip so one way to save was to take a bus instead of flying. I checked around a bit and find out the bus was not that comfortable. In particular the overnight bus attracts sketchy people and was not easy to sleep on. Unfortunately I was out of options so I decided to tough it out. I arranged for a friend to drive me down to the bus terminal in downtown Toronto but unfortunately I had forgotten to tell her that it was in Toronto and she arrived to late to drive me. I am experienced traveler so I always have a fast backup plan in case something like this happens so I quickly drove to Toronto and parked in a nearby ... read more

Woke up to the sound of a rain storm. A glance at my cellphone said it was 5AM. We were planning on watching the sun rise from the roof but the cloudy sky and the rain made me go back to sleep. Danielle wasn't surprised when we woke up a few hours later to start the day. It took both of us to carry all the things Danielle and I purchased in the last 2 days. On our way out of the door we ran into a hostel employee at the front desk. We dropped off our key and I explained to her that our keys were switched with our neighbor. I had actually found this out last night when Danielle had gone to the bathroom and the door had opened with a confused but very ... read more

North America » United States » Ohio » Cleveland November 16th 2013

Woke up early the next day and since Danielle was still asleep I went out myself and did some exploring of the building. The rooftop terrace had a nice view of Cleveland and I reminded myself to go up later that evening to see the buildings lit up. I wandered around the neighborhood looking for some place to get some breakfast. As it turns out the famous West Side market was a block away from the hostel. I sat down for breakfast at the West Side Café which got all their ingredients from the neighboring market. Most of the breakfast was fairly standard eggs, toast, and potatoes but I will say the bacon they had was incredible. I wanted to get some bacon to bring home but it would be hard to keep it fresh on ... read more

This will be my first blog about a road trip. I take road trips all the time but I have never written about them. I quite enjoy driving aimlessly and I can drive 12 hours in one day so I can go a great distance in just a few days. For this trip I will have a driving companion, my good friend Danielle Takacs I originally wanted to go to NYC but the greater distance and the fact we only had a weekend caused Danielle to veto that idea (GRRRRRRRRR). So we settled on Cleveland and honestly the only thing I know about Cleveland is that their river was on fire at some point. Before we left Danielle and I worked out a few things we could see, Christmas Story house, Rock and Roll hall of ... read more
