We were heading to Amsterdam that morning so we left early and made our way to town where we had a cuckoo clock and beer stein demonstration. Wanted to get a Beer Stein but 280 Euros was too much for me. We had a bit of time in the little German town which had been flooded a few weeks earlier. I ended up buying a teddy bear as a gift. The drive to Amsterdam took the rest of the morning and into the afternoon and for the first time on the tour we stopped and ate at Mac urs (Macdonald's). I took the opportunity to grab a few happy meal toys as gifts. Kate told us about Amsterdam which she had been to many times now and warned us the nickname was Amsterdamage both for the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Bacharach June 16th 2013

After we left Dachau concentration camp we made our way up the Rhine Valley towards Bacharach where we would stay in a castle that night. It was pretty quiet on the bus and Kate could sense we were not in a fun mood so she showed us the video of Jordan (Australia) and Darcy (Australia) skydiving. Jordan and Darcy are sisters. I remember Jordan was 18 or 19 and Darcy was the older sister who also served in the Australian military in Afghanistan. They were brave enough to go skydiving each after the accident. Other people who considered it pulled out before paying the deposit. The skydive was in plane instead of a helicopter and I probably saw the plane in the air because they saw us paragliding. When they went up Jordan actually got sick ... read more

Due to the sensitive nature of Dachau Concentration Camp I will be separating it from my other blogs. We travelled from Austria into Germany. Our first stop of the day was Dachau Concentration camp. I knew a lot about WW 2 and the concentration camps but had never been to one. On the way there Kate told us about Germany, its history, the concentration camps and WW 2 in general. Dachau was the first concentration camp and initially used to hold Hitler's political prisoners. Eventually it held all the other victims of the Nazis. I was interested in going there but looking forward to it is not the right way to put it. We got there and Kate walked us to the front gate and let us go as we pleased and just told us to ... read more

Europe » Austria » Tyrol » Kirchberg in Tyrol June 15th 2013

Woke up that day feeling nervous because in a few hours I would be flying off the ground in a parachute and that terrified me because I am scared of heights. People were talking about the masked party the night before at the bar which was apparently a lot of fun. Some back story, Venice is known for its Masks which allowed in the old days people of nobility and peasants to go to parties. So last night's parties people had bought masks in Venice and wore them to the party. The bus left fairly early that morning because we had a long ride to Austria and we had to be there shortly after noon for the optionals. We were just pulling out when I realized I had left my jacket which had my passport in ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice June 14th 2013

Woke up with my 2nd hangover of the tour and vague memories of all the stuff I said the night before. I slipped out quietly of my cabin so not to wake my roommate Ken. I did my daily blog at the benches near reception as I waited for everyone to wakeup. We had a full day in Venice and I was looking forward to Gondola ride. I know it is a cheesy tourist thing but I can't help being cheesy. While I was waiting for the bus to drive us into town I ran into Christine from the Mega European tour. The Mega European tour is a 49 day tour that goes all over Europe and into Turkey as well. I got along well with everyone on the bus but after 49 days we would ... read more

Europe » Vatican City » Vatican City June 13th 2013

Today we get a tour of Vatican City. It would only be a partial day because we were leaving for Venice at 11:30AM. After breakfast we preloaded all of our luggage into the bus and Mike and Kate drove us to Cipro station where we would meet the bus after the tour. Mike the great driver he is put us directly/illegally in front of Cipro and we all piled out. A few of us were going shopping but most of us opted for the tour. Kate led us to where we would meet our tour guide and handed us off. The tour guide handed out radio boxes with headphones so we could all hear him speak. He took us up a flight of stairs and we could see the walls of the Vatican. We got there ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome June 12th 2013

Woke up that morning looking forward to the day because I have always wanted to see Rome but kept putting it off for other cities. After breakfast we waited for the bus and Kate advised we would all have to fit into this bus. Considering there was over 40 of us it was going to be a tight fit. That turned out to be an understatement as you can see in the picture. I ended in more or less in Aileen's (Australia) lap. She and others were very cool about the tight quarters we had on the bus. Funniest part was when a few nuns had to squeeze into the bus as well. After 20-30 minutes of this we all pushed off the bus at the Metro stop and got into the Metro cars which I ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence June 11th 2013

Woke up in Firenze which is the Italian word for Florence. Gillon and Ken were still very much asleep so I slipped out of the room quietly and went downstairs to reception. I needed to find an arts and crafts store so after a game of charades with the person at reception I gave up and just brought up a picture of what I wanted on a computer. After that he directed me down the street to a store. Reminding myself to go later in the day I headed back to the Plus Florence. Today's plan was we eat breakfast, load the bus early that morning, take a walking tour of Florence, a leather demonstration, and than a bit of free time before heading to Rome later that day. I went downstairs to the dining area ... read more

Woke and went to take a shower before breakfast and ran out into the rain. Stopped at that point and got my umbrella which I had almost left at home. When I got back to cabins a few of the ladies were heading to shower without umbrellas and I loaned mine to one of them. Didn't see the umbrella again until Belgium. Breakfast was early that morning because we were leaving early for Pisa/Florence. I woke up Ken and MJ to make sure they didn't miss breakfast, one of the reasons why we have roommates throughout the tour. After eating we packed the coach and left Switzerland behind. Emma had surgery the night before and was resting in the hospital and Jemma was on her way to be with her. Kate had rejoined us at that ... read more

Woke up today and went to reception to get some change because the showers were 50 Swiss cents. Unfortunately for me it was closed but thankfully Ken had the foresight to get some change the night before and I was able to borrow a coin. The campgrounds actually had the bathrooms and showers in a different building so if you wanted to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night you had to go outside. Breakfast was in the tent and we all got ready for today's optional activities. Most of us were going on a train to Jungfrau and 4 of the ladies Romy, Jemma, Emma and one other person were waiting for the weather to clear so they could go for their helicopter sky dive. The group that was going for the ... read more
