This will be a long blog starting at 12AM on April 18 and not ending until 11PM of the same day. The blog starts with me going to Canberra greyhound bus station. I thought Canberra seemed like a boring city but on my way to the bus station the streets were filled with college age kids running around and partying in the streets. A lot of people were shouting at me on my way to the bus station. Taking a bus in Cambodia can be dangerous and taking a bus in Canada and USA is not comfortable. I was not looking forward to the Australian bus but it was comfortable and it had charging ports at each seat which helped a lot. I was able to sleep through most of the ride so I woke up ... read more

Very early morning ride to the airport. I had wanted to take the train but it did not run early enough so I got a ride from the hostel manager for $45 AUD. Had to wake up at 4:30AM to pack up and take a shower. Car left promptly at 5AM and 45 minutes later I was at the airport and in line for my Virgin Airlines flight. I am usually good about my flight planning but here I made a mistake because I didn't realize my ticket did not include checked baggage. I had to pay an extra $70 for my bag. If you buy through Travelocity or Expedia than always check with the airline itself to confirm what it covers. Ok first flight took me to Sydney and I will say Virgin Airlines does ... read more

Everyone should have a bucket list. A list of things you swear to do before you die. #2 on my bucket list is hugging a Koala. To do this I would have to head to Queensland state in Australia. Most other states in Australia allow you to see Koalas and get close but not touch them. So I did some research and located Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary near Brisbane. They allow you to hug them but keep strict limits on how long the Koalas do this in a day. So the key is to get there early so you don't miss your opportunity. The hostel has free breakfast so I helped myself to some toast and jam. I was planning on taking a bus to the sanctuary and the train to the Gold Coast. After some ... read more

First thing this morning would be a catchup with another Topdeck buddy Sam. I remember her from the tour because she was one of 2 muslims on the tour and on top of that they were both vegetarians. It did cause them some issues on the tour because a few of the vegetarian dishes had wine in them. We arranged beforehand to meet at Central station for breakfast. Central station is very large so it took a while to find each other. At one point I was on one floor and she was directly below me on a different floor LOL. So once we found each other and had the customary hug greeting we settled down to some baked goods from a Chinese bakery in the station. I told Sam about my travels so far and ... read more

Woke up that morning and went looking somewhere to have breakfast. I could have just gotten something at the convenience store but since I was going to be doing a lot of walking that day I opted for a full breakfast. I found a nice restaurant that served breakfast nearby and had a regular breakfast of egg sandwich with bacon along with some orange juice. It was not cheap being almost $11 dollars. I reminded myself to try to stay within budget for the rest of my Aussie trip. First stop on the day was another post office. I should explain that I send a lot of postcards while traveling it does save me the trouble of buying gifts and bringing them in my luggage. This time I was posting a package to New Zealand. It ... read more

Landed at 9AM at Sydney International airport. Due to my traveling I have a lot of experience with Aussie accents so I felt right at home once I landed. Airasia was not a great flight but far from the worse I have been on so I will consider them for future travels. Immigration check was required for people not from Britain, USA or New Zealand. I had paid for my E Visa before I left Canada so I went to the line for people who had the E Visa. I presented my Passport which had been electronically connected to the E Visa. After a few questions I was advised I would be subjected to secondary checks. This has happened a few times when traveling and oddly enough most often when I cross back into Canada on ... read more

Today I would start out in Phnom Penh and by the end of the day I would be in Australia. I left the hostel in the morning to look for some breakfast place. Specifically I was looking for a place that served Durian. Durian is a large spiky fruit with a very sweet, almost custard like seed inside. It is native to South east asia and is known as the King of Fruits. Part of the reason is because the size of the spike fruit and the very strong smell it gives off. It is one of my favourite foods and I wanted to eat it at the source. I tried to politely decline the numerous tuk tuk drivers I past along the way. After wandering around for awhile I settled at a place that looked ... read more

Today I would be meeting my Aunt who I have not seen since I was about 2 and her children (My cousins) whom I have never met face to face. I did a walk around the neighborhood with a hostelmate and kept getting called by Tuk Tuk drivers. One of the things that have changed about Cambodia over the last decade is the proliferation of tuk tuk drivers who call out to all the tourists at all times. If you walk down the street of Siem Reap or Phnom Penh you will be asked many times. Anyway we were looking for a place that she had heard about but when we got there it was not opened so we just headed back to the hostel. Around 9AM I got on a Tuk Tuk and gave the ... read more

Waking up that morning at 6AM I showered and packed as quietly as I could. I went downstairs and took a Tuk Tuk to the transport company that would take me to the capital. I had gotten advise from the hostel to take a van to capital because it was faster. BAD ADVICE. It was a 12 seat van and I managed to grab a window seat and shortly after 7AM we were on our way. The other van passengers were all Cambodian nationals and was not really built for tourists. It was fairly crowded and the air conditioning did not work that well. Once the van got going I wished I had went with the Giant Ibis bus instead. I did not put this incident on my facebook daily blog but on the way out ... read more

4:30AM wakeup for my sunrise trip to the Temples. I had given a headsup to the Dutch ladies that I would be waking them. I skipped a shower because I would have to shower when I got back anyway. I was using the same Tuk Tuk driver as yesterday and he competently drove me to the ticket location. It costs $20 for a 1 day pass or $40 for a 3 day pass. My parents are both Cambodian so I have technical Cambodian citizenship but the lady at the ticket window refused to recognize my claim. DAMN DAMN DAMN. Ok enough of that, I paid the $20 and was on my way. It took about 30 minutes or so to get to the Angkor Wat temple from my hostel. The Temple is almost 1000 years old ... read more
