Woke up in the creepiest hostel I have ever stayed at and got dressed in the dark. I left the hostel at around 5:30AM and I will never return to that particular hostel. I drove on the highway for awhile before stopping at a Denny's for breakfast. This would be my only meal until I reach Dallas in the evening. I usually skip lunch on vacation and load up at breakfast to compensate. I also loaded up on caffeine pills at this point to keep me awake on the road. I will advise people to very careful with caffeine pills because they are addictive. They should be only used for emergency situations. Drive to Dallas was uneventful but I enjoyed looking at the billboard advertisements on the highway. The Americans advertise so much better on the ... read more

Today would be my only day in Chicago. This entire trip is what I literally call a drive by trip, so I would only be spending a short time in each location. I woke up and grabbed free breakfast at the hostel. Today was toast with jam and an apple with some juice. I chatted with the hostel staff and told them about the strange dream. Apparently it was not a dream and last night some intoxicated people had come back to the hostel. Only some of them were actually staying at the hostel. A very confused fight broke up in the hallway where no one knew who was fighting whom. The hostel staff was finally able to sort who was who and throw out the interlopers. They did a good job because the hostel was ... read more

I left work at noon on my way to Chicago. Made sure I had all my necessities clothes, medicine, passport. I try to pack lightly and I knew along the way I can replace most everything except for my passport. So I would passing through the Sarnia border crossing on my way to the USA. I usually use that crossing because it is not as busy so you get through faster. Travelling alone I usually get interrogated by border police. I was expecting it to be even harsher this time because it would be the farthest trip I have ever done driving. So I took a deep breath as I approached the border. The border official asked me where I was going and I informed all the way to California. He seemed skeptical that I was ... read more

Took the overnight bus from Toronto and got into New York City at 8AM. The greyhound bus is OK comfortable and it only costs $80 return to get to New York. I will say buses in Europe and Australia are more comfortable than North America and have features such as seat side USB ports and movies playing. I had no real plans today beyond the Times Square ball drop so I decided to do some wandering. First stop was Times Square at the stage itself. Even at this early hour there were people camped out with sleeping bags and blankets. I admired their dedication to get the best spots. If you want to do this than you will need to be in a group because there must be someone there at all times to watch your ... read more

My last stop for this trip would be Bath, Somerset. I had meant to see the Roman Baths for some time but kept putting it off for other places. One of my Topdeck friends was working in Bath now so it was good opportunity to see her. Equity points hostel gives breakfast which included hard boiled eggs. I got there just in time as it starting filling up as soon as I sat down. I did some people watching and I did notice a large number of international groups at this hostel both European and Asian. This is likely because it is the closest hostel to Paddington which is on the direct line from Heathrow. I had another hard time sleeping which was due to the beds and the fact I was so hyped up from ... read more

I had a terrible night sleep in that hostel. I will say the bed they have at Isaacs hostel is one of the worse I have ever experienced and I usually can sleep on anything. I went downstairs to eat breakfast which was a standard continental breakfast. After getting some toast, jam and juice I sat down next to Annelise and Jeff, the two American students I had met the previous night before. I will admit now it took a few moments to recognize them as I was still quite groggy. After food, shower and packing up I headed to my first stop of the day which was the Guinness storehouse. I had gotten various advise on what to see in Dublin but the storehouse was the one place I wanted to see for certain. Dublin ... read more

This would be my 4th trip to Paris. I keep meaning to go to the top of the Eiffel tower each time before but something always gets in the way. So I was determined to make it work this time but things don't always work out the way you want it to. I was on a very narrow schedule and that was probably a mistake. I landed at CDG more or less on time but to exit the plane required us to board a bus which took us on 20 minute tour of the airport before dropping us off near the terminal. Customs and immigration line was another 15 minutes but Paris has a laid back immigration system and they simply stamped my passport and waved me through. I was already running late by this point ... read more

Woke up on my last day and said goodbye to the people I had met over the last few days. Some of them were leaving today while others had more time in New Orleans. My flight didn't leave until 5pm so I had a bit of time. I headed into town one last time to try a gator burger and get last minute gifts and souvenirs. I got advise from Lisa yesterday that you can get gator burgers in the French Market. I hadn't been there yet so I wandered along the river to get there. Gator burger was good and was actually mostly pork because gator meat does not become burger meat easily. After eating I managed to get my customary magnets and keychain at the French Market. I got some chocolates and pralines at ... read more

Today was my last full day so I left at 9AM for my French Quarter tour. I will admit at this point I was having a lot of trouble with the humidity so I was sweating like crazy all the time. I would go through many bottles of water each day. August is the hottest month of the year for New Orleans and is the slowest month of the year. That is quite surprising considering the crowds I saw during the day and night. Tour started at Jackson Square which is the heart of the French Quarter. It is called that because there is a big statue of Andrew Jackson on a horse who was a hero of the war of 1812. There is a strange carving on the side of the statue that says "THE ... read more

I woke up to a hangover headache but I had to get up because my first tour was 10AM. I struggled out of the bed and showered before heading to the streetcar. The hostel is right on the streetcar line which runs up and down Canal street. I paid $3 for my all day pass and headed into the French Quarter. FYI the French Quarter is actually quite small and makes up only a portion of New Orleans. First tour of the day was a Voodoo tour near Louis Armstrong Park. It was a free tour organized by Free Tours on Foot. The tour guide named Melissa told us about the history of Voodoo which is a blend Catholicism and African religions. As it turns out they were fairly easily blended and they worked on their ... read more
