Today would be my first full day hiking in the Iroquioan section of the Bruce Trail. I have already mailed my travel blog to the Niagara Trail association. Starting hiking at 8AM at Beamer Conservation Area. The first 2 km or so is walking down Ridge Rd. You should keep walking until you see the communication tower and turn right. You walk for another 500 meter until you turn onto the trail. This trail runs along the edge of the Escarpment and has a nice view of the Lake in the distance. The trail is fairly level and easy to walk on. You will pass over Fifty Road and McNeilly Rd but for the most part you are just walking through the woods. I was the first one walking through that morning and I knew this ... read more

Day 5 of my Hike. This time I would have some company of my hike. Lea is an old friend from high school and I knew she would be good at hiking because she ran competitively in University and would be good shape. We met up at Beamer Conservation Area and left her car there and took my car to Quarry Rd Beamsville which would be the start of our hike. The weather was beautiful and only a bit chilly. We dressed in layers so that we could just lose layers when it got too hot. This section is rated hard to hike but aside from a few hills and muddy sections we made good time. The fact that it was mostly dry made hiking easier. It was lovely views along the way we chatted along ... read more

Day 4 of my hike. This is my first hike with good weather so I was looking forward to it. Drove down to the Niagara region again. I am slowly drawing closer to my home base so that each drive is a few kilometers shorter. I parked my car at the Rockway Community Center and started my hike. I took the Rockway Side Trail and connected with the Bruce Trail after a few hundred meters. The hike went downhill and you get a nice view of Rockway Falls. About 1 KM in I also ran into a group of deer that suddenly appeared near the trail. In a flash all 3 of them took off running. They were white tail deer because I saw the white flashing tails they had. The next 5 km were a ... read more

Day 3 of my hike. Another cold day and the temperature with the wind chill would be -10 degrees. This makes hiking hard because your muscles just don't work as well in the cold. I drove down to Decew House and parked my car and started my hike all bundled up. I walked along a lake and watch the geese playing in Lake Moodie. It is a full double trail so I was making good time walking along the water edge. There were a few waterfalls along this hike and the first one is Morning star Falls. You see when you are exiting the first part of the trail and back onto Decew Rd. I turned right on Decew Rd for about 500 meters before turning back onto the trail. You enter Short Hills Provincial park ... read more

Day 2 of my hike. Decided to hike every Sunday for the first month of my journey. I should be able to hike the final few hundred kilometers sometime in August. Tried to get someone to go hiking on this leg but no one wanted to hike in freezing weather that distance so I decided to do this another way. Early morning drive to Woodend Conservation Area which is in Fonthill, ON. Temperature was -5 degrees and I was all bundled up to combat the weather but it was still a bit chilly for me. You start off the hike by climbing over a ladder to get into the hiking trail. It was an icy trail but I was making a decent time until the trail became a slushy mess and I was forced to walk ... read more

I decided hike the Bruce Trail this year. To hike the entire trail (800KM) would take 30 days straight. I can't take that much time off at the same time so I will hike the trail each weekend until I get the number down to hike the last few hundred KM straight. So early morning I drove down to Niagara on the Lake to the Queenston Heights Park with the Brock memorial overlooking. After touching the plaque signifying the start of the trail I went to the other side of the park and started hiking. The first few KM is easy hiking through the park. After that you reach the top of the escarpment and have to descend down. It was muddy and slippery and the incline is quite steep. If you stay on the trail ... read more

Tamara and I left the hotel at 8:30AM and headed to Ottawa for a stopover at Parliament. Ottawa is only 2 hours from Montreal so it was a relatively short drive. We parked near parliament hill and went to the ticket office for our free tickets. The tickets are free and you are assigned a time for your tour. We went through security which is similar to what you have to go through at the airport. I have been through security like this many times and I sailed through. Strangely enough Tamara was stopped and subject to a secondary search. I think she forgot to take off her watch which set off the metal detector. It was a funny moment though while the security guard use the security wand on her. The tour of parliament was ... read more

I woke in my hotel room at New Years as with most of my travels it took me a few seconds to realize where I was again. We had breakfast at the hotel before heading out to face Montreal once more. After talking to the concierge we found out a lot of places were closed on New Years Day but some museums should be open. Our first stop would be McGill university. It has a lovely campus right in the middle of the city. We wandered around the campus and Tamara talked about how she is considering attending this university. If she chooses to do that it would be a lovely place to live. We went next to the underground mall. Some background, Montreal has a whole city underneath it where you can shop, be entertained ... read more

This would be my 2nd destination New Years trip. Last years in New York was so good I decided to make it a tradition. Coming with me this would be my girlfriend Tamara. We have been dating for 3 months and this would be our first trip together. She is a wonderful lady and we have a lot of fun together. It would also be a good test for our relationship because we would only have each other for 2 days+. I chose Montreal partly for geography and partly because the Montreal people I spoke to heavily recommending it for New Years. We would be staying at the Chateau Versailles which is a hotel located in Old Montreal. Thursday morning I found myself at Tamara's house. After a greeting with her dog Buffy we packed up ... read more

Woke up early and went quietly downstairs. I had a 7:30AM flight to Lima. I checked out of the hostel and the guy at security got me a taxi which I paid 12 Soles for the ride to the airport. My flight back to Canada would also be with Avianca and as I was checking in a guy tapped me on the shoulder and showed me a badge and told me he wanted to ask me some questions. This was not the first time I have been pulled for secondary screening and it was fairly benign. He searched my bag and asked me some questions before allowing me to go to my flight. My flight to Lima would arrive in Lima at 9AM and my flight back to Toronto would be 19 hours later. I didn't ... read more
