I am travelling to Africa this summer, to undertake a four-week community project, attend the 13th World Scout Moot and climb Mount Kilimanjaro. I am participating on the community project through a gap-year company called Frontier and will be volunteering in a hospital in the coastal city of Mombasa. I'm sure I will learn a lot from the experience. The World Scout Moot is the first event of its kind to be held in Africa, and I am a Guide in the UK Scout Contingent attending the event. It will be an amazing opportunity to share in world cultures, and also take part in adventurous activites, community projects and global development activities. After the Moot, I am travelling on with some of the UK contingent to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. This will be a huge challenge, and I am sure it will test me to my limits.

Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro - 5895m, the highest peak in Africa, the largest free-standing mountain in the world. I made it! On the first day of our climb, we set off from Marangu Gate and started our trek through a rainforest. It was a beautiful place, and thankfully not too wet. It was mostly a gentle climb, and our guides constantly told us to go "polepole" - slowly. We were to hear this phrase an awful lot over the next few days! After hiking for about 4 hours, we reached Mandara Huts, where we were to stay for the night. The accomodation was very basic, but there were beds which were a welcome change to tents! After settling in, we did a short acclimatisation walk to the top of a nearby crater to become used to the ... read more

I've managed to get to an internet cafe in a place called Moshi, where we are staying for the night before starting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro tomorrow. I'm pretty excited, but also quite nervous about the climb. On the last day we leave at midnight and walk to the summit and down again, which will be pretty tough! It has been lovely to be in a hotel with a comfy bed and hot shower! The last few days at camp were great, and I was sad to say goodbye to everyone yesterday. I did some African dancing, went to the international fair, watched a Britain vs Australia game, went to the National Museum, made a campfire and saw a show of African song, dance and music amongst other things. The Moot was a great experience, and ... read more

During my last couple of days in Mombasa, I spent a lot of time saying goodbye! I visited Bomu again, and gave gifts to the staff I worked with to say thank you. As a leaving present my hosts took me to have my arms painted with henna, which was really cool. I helped out at another medical camp, and was wished well by all the people I had spent time with on these trips. On my last night, I went out with my volunteer friends, and partied to say farewell. I then travelled on to Nairobi, to meet the rest of the UK contingent for the 13th World Scout Moot. We had an action-packed two days in the city, visiting a centre of traditional tribal houses, seeing a performance of tribal dances and acrobatics, going ... read more

With only 2 more days remaining of my time in Mombasa, I have been trying to fit as much in as possible! After my last blog entry, my hosts took me out to the cinema, and we saw a Bollywood film called "I Hate Luv Stories". It was very different to the type of films I am used to watching, but I really enjoyed it. Bright and early the next morning, I met up with some other volunteers and a family on holiday to go on safari. We travelled west towards Nairobi, and then entered Tsavo East National Park. Our guide (Patrick) told us, once we had entered the park, that it may be up to 50km before we saw any animals. However, about 2 minutes later we saw a herd of elephants grazing about 50m ... read more

My time in Mombasa seems to be rushing by, but I'm trying to fit as much in as possible. I have been learning more Swahili each day, and the locals seem to understand what I am saying - on the whole! Nasema kidogo Kiswahili (I speak a little Swahili) and nafurahi kukufahamu (I'm pleased to meet you) feature frequently when I am meeting new people. Last Saturday I went on another medical outreach camp, this time to a remote area south of Mombasa. We passed through Shimba Hills Nature Reserve to reach the village we were going to, and the scenery was breathtaking. There were rolling hills covered in lush greenery as far as the eye could see, and the brick-red soil of the road/track we were travelling on was a stark contrast. The journey was ... read more

The name of my project was "Hospitals and Beaches", and I have certainly been enjoying both! I transferred from the data office to the lab, and spent a week there. It was a fascinating place, and I learnt a lot. During my time there I carried out numerous tests on blood samples, stained blood and viewed it under a microscope to look for the malaria parasite, and carried out urinalysis. It was hard to know how it compared to a lab in the UK as I haven't been to one, but they had lots of modern machines alongside simple tests. The staff were lovely, and seemed very grateful for my assistance. Yesterday I moved to another department called Muangalizi. They organise volunteers to visit HIV positive children and their caregivers, in their homes. I have been ... read more

My first impression of Mombasa - it's hot! On Friday morning I was picked up from Moi airport by the in-country Frontier coordinator, after a long journey via Amsterdam and Nairobi. The flight from Nairobi was very short, and afforded an amazing view of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above cotton wool clouds. I commented on the heat during the journey to Mombasa's Old Town, and was informed that this was actually cold weather! There were hundreds of sights and sounds to take in on the journey including the crazy traffic, slum areas and street stalls. My host, Dr Hassan, and his family were occupied with a family wedding, so I spent the first few days of my trip staying at his brother's house. It was situated in the Old Town, which is full of narrow streets, souvenir ... read more

It's less than 8 hours until I fly! A few last-minute items have been added to my rucksack, and I'm ready to go. It's been so long in the planning, and I can't believe that my adventure actually starts today. I think nerves will kick in soon! I arrive at Mombasa at 9.30am tomorrow, and will be picked up from the airport by a member of the Frontier staff who will take me to my home-stay. I think there will be a few shocks and surprises in store for me when I arrive in such a different country, but I am sure that my host family will make me feel very welcome. I hope to access the internet at least once a week, and I will no doubt have lots of news and stories!... read more

Well, it's only 17 days now until I leave for Kenya! I'm getting pretty excited, and am just getting the last few things organised for my travels. I've lost count of the number of injections I've had so far - they've not been very enjoyable! My fundraising has gone amazingly well, with over £1000 pounds being raised through the Family Ceilidh I organised, cake sales, donations kindly given to me and various other things. The generosity of the local community has been fantastic! I have also recieved a grant of £400 from the South of Scotland Youth Awards Trust and a donation of £50 from the Rotary Club of Langholm, where I will give a talk on my travels. ... read more
