This turned out to be my favourite day of the Upper Mustang. Lo Manthang Rest Day- A visit to the Chosar Valley NPI score of 0 this morning- no oats, therefore no porridge. We have a bowl of cooked muslei- courtesy of Dhana's food stockpile! Set off after 8 - it's our big day out (BDO) to the Chosar Valley with the Belgians. Packed lunch- check, Nike Ipod pedometer- check, enthusiasm - check. We detour via the Lo Manthang gompa on the way out and then we're off. Another beautiful blue sky, more good weather. It is great to be striding it out and mixing up the combination of walkers. One thing I LOVE about trekking is meeting new people from diverse backgrounds and just getting to know them within the constraints of time spent in ... read more

Tsarang to Lo Manthang The big day of the trek- the day we get to Lo Manthang! In all honesty Lo Manthang, the destination, isn't the big thing for me at all- it is the entire trek in this region. So far it has been such an incredibly different experience to the Everest region and the Annapurnas; in the culture, in the architecture, the people and the landscapes, it is very unique. So a routine breakfast? In a way- porridge as usual but.... this porridge is standout with an NPI (Nepali Porridge Index Score) 10/10!!! Departure is just after 8 this morning via the Tserang Thupten Shedrub Dhargyeling Monastery, phew, what a mouthful. The monastery is 700-800 years old. There are normally 45 monks in residence but right now most of them are away on holidays for ... read more

Syangboche (3800m) to Tsarang (3560m) My day pack is getting heavier by the day. I find I am now carrying apples, cheese and homemade biscuits courtesy of Dhana. I'm not sure if it is a) an attempt to increasing my general fitness b) an attempt to vary our diet (I order pretty much the same thing every day) c) an attempt to reduce our food costs, or d) excellent pre-planning to avoid the risk that every teahouse on the journey will be closed and we will have to completely provide our own food. Whatever the answer (my money's on c) we decide to eat the food as quickly as possible so as not to have to carry it any longer than necessary, especially in view of the fact that Dhana's pack has disappeared completely and appears ... read more

Chele (3100m) to Syangboche (3800m) WOW, WOW,WOW, WOW,WOW, WOW,WOW, WOW,WOW, WOW,WOW, WOW,WOW, WOW,WOW, WOW,WOW, WOW.... The walking today was amazing. Why? 1. Very steep downhill followed by very steep uphill leading to .... 2. Incredible soaring gorges and deep valley 3. Awesome swing bridge- probably the highest, most spectacular one to date 4. Some nice narrow paths and rocky ledges to negotiate 5. Utterly incredible views of the Upper Mustang, I can't impress enough how stunning it is (in a stark kind of way) 6. We lose the road (for a while) 7. I feel as though I am really trekking again Got a few little patches of snow and a few mules, a lot of mud. No tourists. Pre-lunch we have an incredible discovery, one that will stay with us for some time..... the McVities ... read more

Kagbeni (2850m) to Chele (3100m) Over breakfast the Norwegians tell us they have been in Nepal filming a doco on death rites and rituals around the world. They have been in the Upper Mustang interviewing a Lama on the old ways (maybe on sky burial?). Some people have really interesting jobs. We have also met wind turbine engineers, an artist, a guy who works for Garmin, a perfusionist, a psychiatrist, engineer/ultrasonographer of pipes, nurses, a radiographer, you name it....Catch up with the Polish guys- the sunburnt face is looking pretty good- my humanitarian mission is complete! We are walking through Kagbeni by 0730 and entering the.... restricted zone (sounds a bit super spy....). It's chilly this morning but there is no wind (yet). We reach the TIMS office and Dhana waves us on, pointing us in ... read more

Mustang (2800m) - Kagbeni (2850m) I'm so looking forward to walking again. Lazy start to the morning, only 10km to walk. Watch the planes coming in and leaving. Over breakfast we meet a couple of Australians who have just finished the Upper Mustang- they loved it, it was very quiet, incredible experience, etc. Leave the Tilicho just before 9. The main street is deserted except for some cow traffic, pass the airport- deserted. Pass the butcher shop- recently butchered cow (I guess that's why the other cows we passed were looking so worried), pass the bakery- go back to bakery, pass the chook truck, pass lots of jeeps.... Check in at the TIMS office. It is windy and cool as we retrace our steps of one year ago, but in reverse and happily this time. I ... read more

AKA Day from Hell I think the Upper Mustang sounds intriguing. We had met a Malaysian couple in Muktinath last year at the end of the Annapurna Circuit who were absolutely in awe after completing their trek through the region and this really piqued my interest. I came home, did a lot of reading and watched every youtube clip on it known to man. Given that it is in the restricted zone it was going to be a costly exercise- USD$500 for a 10 day permit, 2 lots of flights (KTM-POK-JOM-POK-JOM) for us and the guide, as well as the usual daily costs. Bit of a discussion with Mary. Decision made- we would do it. Now that this was the morning that we would actually start I was really excited. The plan was for a taxi ... read more

I was keen to look at food costs on the EBC so diarised prices as we went. Here is a small sample of costs of food/drinks- hot water cup/small pot/medium pot/large pot, black tea, porridge, toast, apple pancakes, momos, dhal bat, omelette chappatis, vege fried rice and power on the EBC in Feb/March 2013. Unfortunately I cant seem to put a table in the text section of this blog. For the moment I have added it as a JPEG in the photos section so if you want to actually see the details you will need to click on the photo to enlarge it to a point that it is readable. If anyone has any idea on insertion of a table please offer advice! I also took some photos of menus that have a few more prices. ... read more

March 14 - March 17 Up early and at the airport- bit chilly, no fog- a good thing for flights. It is a total bun fight at the airport, people and bags everywhere but it all gets sorted out and we are through to the waiting area. It is really nice to see so many familiar faces- the French from Angle are there, the German doctor and dentist are there, the Germans from Namche.... even the Korean guy on the horse from yesterday morning (horse is nowhere to be seen), it's pretty sociable. First plane comes in at 0710 then 3 more planes in quick succession, they all fly off again bar 1. Apparently it is foggy in Kathmandu so we're all running a bit late. I find it pretty exciting watching these little planes coming ... read more
