Lobuche (4930m) to Gorak Shep (5160m) to Kala Patthar (5546m) Say goodbye to the Christians, they are heading for Gorak Shep and EBC, we are doing Gorak Shep with Kala Patthar. Out the door in a lot of clothes with the addition of the crampons we bought in Kathmandu. They are small, lightweight and just slip over your boots. Getting them on is challenge though when your fingers are soooooo freezing cold. Anyway, we head out along the icy, rock terrain. Its noticeably harder going this morning. The crampons are a fantastic asset. We pass the Italian research station mentioned in the LP guidebook. Here is their link complete with webcam views from Kala Patthar- very cool. http://evk2.isac.cnr.it/ Lots of yak trains this morning. The views are, once again, stunning, the sky has taken on an ... read more

Dingboche (4360m) to Lobuche (4930m) Bad start, Mary is feeling really dreadful today, decision made to stay a bit longer and see how she feels after breakfast. This girl is such a trooper, she never gives up. After some Panadol (wonder drug) and Psuedafed and a LLD (little lie down) she appears saying she's feeling a lot better. The breakfast porridge arrives- it has a distinctly weird smell to it, I gag down about 1/3 of it before throwing in the towel- better than throwing it up! Mary has already finished hers- she must be feeling better! Apparently as a gesture of kindness and to give us extra strength for our big day the cook decided we needed a "treat"- porridge with yak (nak, actually) butter! Nak butter is an acquired taste- I dont think I ... read more

REST DAY Dingboche Unusual porridge this morning- 6.5/10 on the NPI- thin, sweet with 1 peanut (???). Todays rest day entails a hike to Chukhung Village - an elevation gain of approx 490m, its supposed to be a 5-6 hr return trip- knowing how these estimations now work it might mean 8 hrs- who knows?? While waiting to head out Dhana and I have an impromptu game of point scoring via an ice hockey/soccer mash up. What's the saying- "Small things amuse...". Anyway... at 0846(precisely), fully sunblocked, all 4 of us pick our way through the icy stepping stone path out of the village. Pass 2 internet cafes- both of whom state they have the fastest internet speeds in the village- we'll see. It's quite icy and snowy along the track but a path has been ... read more

Pangboche (3860m) to Dingboche (4360m) Make it through the night managing to put off going to the yak toilet until 0600. It's actually a very nice toilet and quite peaceful out there in the early morning light. Enough toilet talk... Slow start, we dont leave until 0830, projected time is a 3 hr easy walk to Dingboche. It is in fact pretty easy, we cross the Khumbu Khola, lots of gentle up and down, we follow the Imja Khola pretty much the whole way with the sun on our backs. The way is punctuated by various coloured yaks and sizes- or are they dzopkayu? Take a morning tea break at 0945 - we sit in the sun, very peaceful. Soldier on over flat terrain, take another break, walk a bit further and see Dingboche off in ... read more

Namche Bazaar (3440m) to Pangboche (3860m) Up at 0615, breaky at 7. Pay the bill- 150rp for a phone recharge. 150rp for a camera recharge. It has been a great place to stay- we'll be back on our return. I am hoping Maya will still be cooking. Out the door before 0800. We leave the village walking on ice- not thin ice, but solidly frozen muddy ice. First stop is at Kyangjuma for a cuppa (there is also an excellent toilet here in Kyangjuma - holes in planks of wood on the floor and after you've been you then sprinkle leaves into the pit- no odour, super clean). The track after the steps up out of the village is pretty level, it's very easy walking. Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest are visible this morning. Cool ... read more

Namche Bazaar Acclimatisation Day Headache gone, sleep well. Work out that residual water in my thermos (still hot) can be put into small jug in bathroom lined with plastic shower cap = wash! = ingenious. Go to breakfast refreshed and smelling sweet. Late breaky at 0745 because its our "rest" day- porridge rates 8/10 on the Nepali porridge index (NPI). Guide and porter are majorly calorie loading- cornmeal, eggs, toast ++ and coffee- hmmm. We sip on our black tea and finish our small serve of porridge. 0840 we make our way up the hill, wow- the elevation kicks in- its a bit harder going this morning. We reach the Tashi Delek Monastery, pass the mani walls and prayer wheels in gold and others in red. Stunning views. Lots of blue pine and juniper (even typing ... read more

Phakding (2650m) to Namche Bazaar (3340m) 0615 up and packed. 0700 porridge, small pot black tea. Porridge rates 7.5/10. An utterly clear, sunny, not a cloud in the sky day. We hit the trail before 0800 and meander through the relatively flat Dudh Kosi Valley, well just a few little ups at this stage. The pine trees are spectacular, the air smells good. AMAZING VIEWS, the snow covered Kusum Kanguru at 6367m is pretty damn impressive. We go through the village of Toktok after 0900 and then Bengkar (2710m). The fields are alive... not with the sound of music, but with planting and harvesting. There's a lot going on in the potato fields, it seems to be mainly women doing this sort of work. We get to witness this spectacle of daily life, I keep having ... read more

Kathmandu - Lukla (2800m) - Phakding (2650m) Alarm set for 0500. Wake at 0200, 0400, 0430... Tings has left us some yoghurt, bread and bananas- dutifully consume with a cup of tea. Dhana collects us in a taxi, strap bags on roof rack and we take a speedy 20 min drive in the (sort of) dark to the airport- the taxi has these weird lights in the back window that are attached to the brakes, every time he brakes (often) the blue disco lights flash maniacally. The only other light is that of fires by the sides of the roads- preferable at 0530 to blue disco lights. Go through the 2 obligatory pat downs at the airport and score the first flight out to Lukla, it's 0814 and i am strapped into the first row seat ... read more

A recap of the intro to set the scene .... A deep seated yearning to go back. A willing friend to go back with again. A supportive husband happy for me to pursue the dream. A trusty guide willing to have us back.... it's on.... Bistari, Bistari 2.0. So, after 318 days or 45 weeks (rounded down) or 7632 hours or 457,920 minutes or 27,475,200 seconds Mary and I are going to be heading back to Nepal. In August 2012, we formulate "The Plan" - fly to Kathmandu via Bangkok, trek the Langtang/Gosainkund Region over 19 days, trek the Upper Mustang over 14 days, spend 3 weeks volunteering in a nursing capacity and intersperse all of that with time at various other spots- organic farm accomodation, traditional home in Patan, back to the Paulines in Chandeswori, ... read more

Goodbyes- check Mary- check Check in- check Luggage- check. We actually get to check in our bags (pretty light this year at 12kg for the entire trip- in an effort to be more minimalistic than last year) as well as 2 overly large extra ones bound for a hospital/ orphanage/ midwifery centre supported by The Healing Tree in Perth (an initiative set up by a Perth doctor). Thai Airways have been generous enough to accommodate the extra stuff because it's going to a charitable organisation. Day pack- check. Got my travel docs, my money- all 4 currencies, my camera, my ipod, my iphone, blah, blah, blah Voting- check. Polling booths have been set up for absentee voting in the Western Australian state election scheduled for March 9, 2013 (Liberal landslide as it turns out). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We... read more
