Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre September 19th 2012

I board the train knowing that today would be a very busy and tiring day, but one I am eagerly anticipating. Today I will walk, or attempt to walk the Cinque Terre trail. The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. "The Five Lands" is composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the national park. The entire area is around eight miles long, while the average distance between neighboring villages is two miles. I arrive from the train in Riomaggiore. My first task was to find my hostel. I follow the instructions and I go up this long hilly street. I have my large backpack on my back at this time, and this ... read more

Rome...what a historical & wonderful city to visit. This is my second trip here, and I mainly came back with two goals in mind which was to view the underground of the Colosseum, and to mail myself a postcard from Vatican City. Upon arrival, I have no trouble finding my hostel, for I have stayed in the same hostel before. I was familiar with the surroundings, so off I went to the Colosseum. I had originally booked a tour of the Colosseum on my arrival day, but I did not think after I booked that I could make the time slot, so I booked the next day as well. Lucky for me, my train arrived early, and after checking into my hostel, I made my way to the train station, and then to the Colosseum. I ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy September 14th 2012

I awake and anxiously board the train to Bayeux. This is the meeting point for the D-Day tour I booked, and I was so excited I could hardly stand myself. On the train, I met two other gentlemen, a father and son, that were also going to do the experience. Their tour was not until the next day, and we had good conversation concering what we may see. Upon arrival, I had to make my way to my meeting point. I had directions on about how to get there, but I was still a little unclear. Off I go. I found my first marker which was a sign that points to a specific hotel. I make the turn, and I am in the town of Bayeux. Now I had to find the meeting point.I walked around ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris September 14th 2012

Paris Paris. I love visiting this city. I come in from a very comfortable overnight train, one in which I had a reclining seat and not a bed. Still very comfortable, and much cheaper. I have been to Paris several times before, and I was quite familiar with the train station and where my hostel was located. I make my way there, and within a matter of minutes, I was at my hostel checking in. It is actually quite nice to not have to stress about locating the hostel. Anyway, as in Barcelona, I was not able to go up to my room yet, so I rented a locker to store my back pack, and off on my Paris adventure. I really did not have a large agenda while I was visiting Paris, as I have ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona September 12th 2012

I depart Atlanta not knowing what to expect from this new experience. I am excited, but a little nervous and anxious about this trip. I have a tight itinerary, and one missed train can mess everything up. I try not to think about this, as once I start my travels, I have noone to depend on but myself. The flight to Barcelona was smooth and uneventful, and upon arrival, I was starting to get excited. I knew I would not have the currency issues I have had in the past, for I purchased a little currency before I left home just in case of an ATM issue or anything else. I clear customs, and off I go. I did use the ATM, and I had no issues. I ask some airport workers how to get to ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich September 24th 2011

I arrive in Munich excited about being there during Octoberfest. In the train station, I already notice that some of the men are wearing leder-hosen and the women are dressed in the long colorful and checkered dresses. I started to get excited, for I have heard of this, but never experienced. Many people travel a lot of miles to come to the home of Oktoberfest - Munich. I am one of them. I am not a real big drinker, but there were many that took up my slack I am sure. The beer steins are huge mongus over here. I have been to Munich before, and it is one of my favorite cities. I leave the train station to go to my hotel. Munich is the only city that I did not stay in a hostel. ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague » Old Town September 22nd 2011

I awake from my overnight train, and I am Prague. This city was under communism for over 40 years and seldom visited by tourists until 1989. Then the Velvet Revolution of 17th November 1989 changed that (now commemorated as a Czech Republic public holiday) and today Prague is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. It is no exaggeration to call Prague one of the most attractive places on earth. I noticed this right away as I was walking to my hostel. My directions to my hostel were pretty clear, and I made it without any problem. I could not check in due to the time, so I decided to take a walking tour. I felt this would give me the best opportunity to see Prague from the eyes of an expert. Lucky for me, ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków September 20th 2011

Wow...almost an eleven hour train ride. All of my first day in Krakow was gone. I was a little nervous, because it was dark, and my directions to my hostel even stated that it was tricky to find it. Lucky for me, I had little trouble getting out of the train station, but now I had to navigate the streets in the dark. I must say I was a little scared, but after a few wrong turns up wrong streets, I trusted a local (who really could not speak English, only pointed) directions. I found my hostel, and I was relieved. When I got to the reception desk, the girl was very nice and friendly, and she gave me a good map and good tips. I appreciated this. I also purchased my ticket to tour Auschwitz ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin September 18th 2011

I arrive in Berlin and luckily my directions to my hostel were pretty good. I found it without much of a problem, and when I checked into my room, I found out that it was four Americans and one Canadian in with me. I got up the next morning with a full agenda. I went to take the free walking tour, and I am glad I did. We met at the Brandenburg Gate, and the tour guides name was David. He was a Brit who had moved to Berlin. He was very knowledgeable about Berlin and the history. We went to the Jewish Memorial first, and we walked through these amazing concrete columns. The walking ground was not level, so the walls got higher and lower. This was a pretty awesome sight and feeling for the ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam September 16th 2011

I arrive in Amsterdam at the Central station. The directions to my hostel were pretty clear, and within ten to fifteen minutes I was there. I was early, however you can store your luggage for a fee, and after figuring out how to do this, I was off. My first sight that I wanted to see was the Anne Frank house. I had asked at the reception in the hostel, and they told me with a map in round about ways how to get there. I first came upon the main square. Wow!!! The absolute beauty; the people; the bicycles. It seemed everyone was riding bikes. Needless to say I had the little bike horn or bell or whatever it was rung at me on more than on a few occasions. I took several photos, and ... read more
