After 3 days hiking at Campobello Island in New Brunswick, it was time to head home. Since I was only a bridge away from Lubec Maine, I decided to get one more visit in - Quoddy Head State Park. There is a colourful red and white stripped lighthouse - West Quoddy Head Light located here which is quite photogenic. It was automated in 1988 and became the focal point of the park. Interestingly, West Quoddy Head is the easternmost point in USA. There are also 5 plus miles of trails at the park including a 2 mile Coastal Trail which hugs the coast. The scenery is marvelous with wonderful views of the cliffs and coves of the area. There is even a beach access area where you can scramble along the rocky beach. It was low ... read more

On my final day at Campobello Island, I saw two very unique rock formations - "the Friar" and Gibraltar Rocks. Both are accessable via a trail, the first at Roosevelt Campobello International Park. To see the "Friar", one must go at low tide and do some scrambling over algae and or seaweed covered rocks. I accessed the rocky beach and slowly and cautiously approached "the Friar". During my hike I met two "winklers" picking up periwinkles (or winkles as they call them) which are often attached to the seaweed. They are sold at $1 a pound (to a local retailer) and sent to France and Japan where they are considered quite the delicacy. Gibraltar Rocks can be viewed along Gibraltar Rocks trail at Herring Cove Provincial Park. The trail is about 4 km long through a ... read more

Another busy day hiking. In total, did 4 trails within the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. I started with the 1 km Eagle Hill Bog. A wooden pathway allows easy access to the bog. This was followed by some beachcombing at Herring Cove Beach where I added two more walking sticks to my collection. Following more beachcombing at Raccoon Beach ( 2 more!), I started a 6 mile loop of 3 trails, leaving and returning to Raccoon Beach. On one of the trails was the Sunsweep sculpture, near Liberty Point; commemorating three national parks with boundaries in both Canada and the US. In all, the hike took around 4 hours, including some more beachcombing at Lower Duck Pond. The evening was spent at Mulholland Point Lighthouse, overlooking Lubec in the state of Maine. This is the oldest ... read more

Spending 3 days on Campobello Island to hike the trails and see the sights. Although you can drive to Campobello Island via a bridge at Lubec Maine, living in New Brunswick, I travelled by small ferry (free) from Letete NB to Deer Island. Another ferry takes you from Deer Island to Campobello Island - a short 20 minute trip. Once on the island I visited the information centre of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. Armed with my trail guide off I went. I was hoping to get a glimpse of the rock formation - Friars Head, but unbeknownst to me at the time, one had to do the trail at low tide to see the rock. Will return tomorrow! One of the must do activities on Campobello Island is to visit Head Harbour Lighthouse (also known ... read more

Spending four days on the "island". Weather is perfect for the beach (around 30 C or 90 F). And of course PEI is known for its plentiful sandy beaches, warm, warm waters and the red sand, red dirt and red cliffs. The first day was at Brackley Beach, one of the more popular beaches. Lovely sand, kilometers of beach, and the warm waters. Something different on day two. We drove to Thunder Cove which is not as well known as the popular areas but just as spectacular. In addition to a lovely beach, a short walk leads you to the "teapot"; an interesting red rock formation close to the shore which of course looks like a teacup. Following another day at Brackley, the final day was spent soaking up the sun at Stanhope Beach, one of ... read more

The third and final day of my trip to Grand Manan. Having to catch a ferry back to the mainland of New Brunswick at 3 PM, I had the morning to do one last hike. I chose the Southwest Head area, the furthest point south of the island. Part of the Lighthouse Trail circumnavigating the island, I tried a portion of the first leg - Southwest Head to Hays Point. The first part of the trail followed the coastal cliffs rewarding one with wonderful views of the cliffs and the coves and inlets below. Known for its thick fog, particularly in early morning, my pictures had an eerie look as the fog enveloped the coast and cliffs. The trail eventually made it inland, passing bogs, ferned areas, trails with summer flowers blooming, and of course the ... read more

Started the day by driving to Dark Harbour on the west coast of Grand Manan. Known for it's world's finest dulse (edible seaweed), a natural rock breakwater provides protection to the harbour. Since the tide was going out, I hiked along the shore to the breakwater where I could beachcomb to my hearts content. I added two more well-weathered hiking sticks to my collection. After about 90 minutes I drove to Ross Island. At low tide only, you can walk to it from Grand Manan and hike entirely around the island; a total distance of around 8 Km (almost 5 miles). The hike around follows various beaches and coves, interspersed with short inland jaunts where the beach was not hikeable. One had to be careful as the route markings were few and far between so vigilance ... read more

Spending 3 days, 2 nights at Grand Manan Island doing some hiking. Following a 90 minute ferry ride from Black's Harbour, NB, I first did a short 30 minute hike along Net Point Trail. A coastal trail with good views of Pettes Cove, Swallowtail Lighthouse and a variety of coastal views. Had to visit the actual lighthouse - Swallowtail, where again you see some majestic views of the coastline of Grand Manan. The final trail of the day was Red Point. A well-maintained trail (2 miles return) along the coast. This is the only place on Grand Manan where the grey volcanic rock meets the red sedimentary rock at a geological fault. Today was an easy day with just 3 short hikes. Tomorrow, at low tide, I will attempt to circumnavigate Ross Island - slightly more ... read more

Following three days hiking the Cabot Trail, I wanted to hike one more popular trail in Nova Scotia - Cape Split. The trail is described as moderately difficult, which it is. It could also be described as rustic, which it is. If you are looking for a polished, manicured trail this is not it. Roots are exposed, some wet areas, rocks in spots, and some lovely areas with just-the-right-amount of elevation change to add an element of challenge. Just the way a hiking trail should be. It is 4.8(8 Km) miles one way. It took me 100 minutes each way for a total hiking time of 3 hours and 20 minutes. The views at the tip are quite picturesque so allow yourself plenty of time to rest, take pictures, have a picnic, or all three. We ... read more

The third and final day of my tour along the Cabot trail. I followed the Coastal (more scenic) route from Cape North toward Ingonish. Passed thru White Point and Neils's Harbour, both scenic fishing villages. Although it was raining as I left early in the morning, by the time I got to the Coastal trail the sun came out and it turned out to be a fine sunny day. This was the most enjoyable hike of the trip and a must do if you are in the area. Ocean coves, waves crashing against the rocks, the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean. You can get down and dirty on this trail as it follows the coast with ample opportunity to scramble off the beaten path (with due caution of course). There are numerous observation areas ... read more
