The last few days have flown by and what I thought was a few days was actually closer to two weeks. Lisa and I spent way too long in Chang Mai waiting for my Chinese visa to come through from the consulate. While we waited we did manage to do some coool things like visit the zoo, (first time experiences of pandas, hippos, lion) walk the nigt bazaar, catch a movie and visit some other touristy sights. We chilled out and caught up on some sleep but the Thai food here has seriously let us down and it got to the stage where we depressed by the fare on offer. We had planned our CM trip to make sure we included the Sunday Walking Street market and this was Chang Mai's only redeeming quality. It was ... read more

The nightbus was more of a nightmare. The VIP bus had taken a turn for the worse, so they piled all the tourists on the local bus. No problem apart from the fact that it stopped every half hour or so which meant the lights kept coming on and off, hence sleep was near impossible. We pulled into Chang Mai's bus terminal around 7am on Tuesday morning and after a few wrong turns, managed to locate the Sk GH. We had made reservations for this place as it had a pool and after several close calls with heat related illness and in general being fed up with sweltering, we thought we deserved some poolside refuge. As murphy would have it, today it rained and was much too cold for swimming. The rain also cancelled today's plan ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ayutthaya July 12th 2010

Today is Monday. Last night Spain won the 2010 World Cup. Lisa and I were tucked up in our noisy room at Tony's Place in Ayuthaya. I think the name Ayuthaya sounds like a Star Wars Princess but unforunately if this was the case we are about 5 centuries too late. This place has lots of wonderful old temples, wats and the ruins are impressive but what's left of the town is pretty ordinary. We arrived yesterday, after an epic 8.5 hour bus jouney. We braved the local transport- always an adventure but it took us a mere 7 minutes to realise that 1.5 days was enough on this little piece of earth. Today we hired a scooter- drove all around the island and checked out some of the main temple/sights. Tonight we are jumping on ... read more

Lisa and I arrived in Bangkok bleary eyed at 5am on Saturday morning. The overnight bus wasn't too bad. We both managed to get quite alot of sleep on the 8hr journey- thanks largely to being tranquilised by the bus sick tablet. We made for Soi Rambuttri- a tourist street close to Kho San Road. Accomodation prices were the most expensive I've seen in all of Asia, but I guess that is to be expected. We decided to treat ourselves to a nice hotel room with aircon, t.v. in english and a proper shower. This delightful luxury was made possible thanks to Mum. We love you! After sorting our accomodation we spent Saturday getting our bearings, trying out local cusine and buying some bits and pieces from the street side markets. On Sunday we walked to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao June 28th 2010

Monday was check out day. Our two Irish neighbours and the 3 English guys had decided they would tag along to Koh tao. We farwelled Power Beach resort and it's oh-so-lovely swimming pool bound for the ferry pier. We had booked and paid for a 12.30 ferry across to Koh Tao but when we got there the pier was packed, packed, packed with people. Everyone had the same idea as us. The system involved exchanging travel vouchers for a sticker and paper ticket then lining up to get onto the ferry. At 1.30 we had managed to get onto the pier with stickers and tickets. We all had our ginormous packs, hangovers and were about to experience the frst signs of heatstroke when a lady began speaking. We were in shock to hear that the 12.30 ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan June 26th 2010

The June Full Moon party on Koh Pha-Ngan's Hadrin beach surpassed all my expectations. There must have been about 4,000 people there (apparently a quiet party) and we made it our goal to stay awake until the sun rose- which we did easily! The evening began with a few G&Ts on our Power Beach balcony, chatting to our neighbours and painting ourselves with glow in the dark body paint. Around 10pm it started to rain...softly at first but before we knew it, we were in the middle of a near monsoon. It was terrential- the wind was pretty fierce and we were considering our options- not exactly ideal party weather. An hour and some vodka shots later, 10 of us were huddled into our neighbours bungalow. Soon enough it died down and we took the opportunity ... read more

Finally Wednesday night had arrived. I had successfully located ' Boardroom Beach Bungalows', checked in, then patiently waited ntil 10pm when Lisa Legs arrived. I went to the airport with Chris (Aussie GH owner) and his friend Conrad. We brought along welcoming beers. So, as I located Lisa (last off the bloody plane) I greeted her with a 'spotlight.. i found you' and a cold beer to quench her Thailand arrival thirst. With greetings done we made a beeline for the bungalow where we quickly chatted and moved across to the chillout bar. We enjoyed a few more beers, a moonlit beach walk and collapsed into bed about 1.30am. So, so so great to have her here! In the morning we grabbed the 10.30am ferry to Koh Phangan where we were thrilled with our accomodation. While ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao June 21st 2010

Not sure where I last finished off but the past week was literally one massive travel exhaustion headache. I spent last Tuesday night in a mini van, awakening groggily in Vientiene where I grabbed my extended Thai visa in a matter of 30 hours. On Thursday night I was on a night train from Vientiene to Bangkok. By 6am Friday I was surrounded by the chaotic humidity that is Bangkok. While I was on a travelling role I opted to buy a ticket to Champon- another 6 hour train journey south. I arrived around 4pm. At 9pm Friday night I climbed aboard the scariest looking cargo ferry I have ever seen where I slept on a metal platform with the travelling locals, arriving in Koh Tao at 5am. By that stage, I was beyond travel weary ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai June 15th 2010

My mini van pulled into Chang Mai around 4pm on Sunday afternoon. It had taken all day to get from Huay Xui in far north Laos to CM. I followed some recommendations and found a decent guest house right in the centre of the old city for 150 BHT a night. Every Sunday night there is a massive street market so I quickly found an ATM (pleased it let me withdraw a decent amount- Laos has a ridiculous limit of 70,000 kip per time= $70) and went shopping. The best part was trying all the different street food. I ate 3 times that night. Pad Thai, fruit shakes. sushi and lemon icecream. All delicious- it's making me hungry just thinking about them. On Monday I had a 'Western' day. I went to Central Airport Plaza, had ... read more

Asia » Laos » North » Luang Namtha June 10th 2010

My Gibbon Experience actually began on the 9th June as I had to get a local bus from Luang Nam Tha to Ban Donchai. This town consists of 3 buildings. Within my first 3 minutes 2 other Aussie girls arrived; Lana and Jess. They were also doing the GE. We staying in Donchai's only guest house - a wooden room with many, many bugs and ate from the 1 restaurant with no menu. It was lovely in a unique kind of way. We attempted to chat with the 6 local girls who were aged between 7- 22 years. Although they didn't actually speak to us in english I could tell that they understood more than what they let on. It was a fun 20+ hours but by 10 am the next morning we were sooo ready ... read more
