Africa October 26th 2010

Sitting at a bar drinking a kutche kutche beer and letting the warm breeze waft over my sticky skin. Life is good here! We left Livingstone a few days ago bound for Dar es Salam (we will arrive in 2 nights time). We have spent some lovely nights camping along the Malawi waterfront and in the bush. The highlights so far have been riding a horse bareback into the river as well as a dress up party which ended with hideous photos and a sore head! We drank Springbok shots (new favourite) and danced until 11pm- quite a victory to stay up so late. Tonight we are planning to sleep on the beach, however as I write this the wind has just picked up so our plans might have to change???? Tomorrow is a long car ... read more

So I have missed 2 weeks on entries and basically it's just a whole lot easier if i go back and write those later. I prefer to write in the here and now. So, we arrived in Livingstone after a massive ferry delay as the border between Kasane in Botswana and Zambia is notoriously slow. We did get to see some live smuggling action but the 3 hour wait in insane heat made that excitement a short lived novelty. Livingstone was the half way point for me. Here, we loose 8 of the original gang and gain 5 newbies. This parting of ways is hard, hard, hard. No one really wants to leave our amazing group. I will be especially sad to farewell an Australian couple (but hopefully they will come and visit me next year). ... read more

Africa » Namibia October 8th 2010

Hi from the adventure hot spot of Namibia. I have already lost track of the days of the week but I have just been informed that today is Friday. I have been on tour for 1 week and 1 day but it feels like a lifetime longer than that! I last wrote that we had crossed into Namibia and were holed up at a lush campground just inside the Namibian boader. That was our last sight of green. From there is has been red dust, dirt and lots of sand. There have been long days of driving and as we passed through Dune 45 in the Namib desert the temperature climbed to a mighty 41 degrees (good preperation for next year). The highlight of the last few days was camping in a bush camp with nothing ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape of Good Hope October 1st 2010

Hello Africa!!! I arrived safely and relatively rested after my 24 hour Emerites journey. It was a thrill to fly with a full service airline after all those AirAsia flights. The free socks, eye mask, toothbrush and hearty meals (including wine) were not wasted on me! everything went to plan and I checked into my backpacker's with ease. The next morning after breakfast I decided to use the Hop On, Hop off bus and for about $20 I took in the sights of Cape town. It was a glorious day and the commentery onboard was really interesting. My favourite stop was Camp's Bay, a beach where all the action is... but where the water is like ice. Interestingly enough a young girl sat down next to me and we started chatting. Yes, of course the coincidences ... read more

The past 6 weeks have flown by and tonight I'm off on Part 2 of my travel year. Although this is meant to be a travel blog it is also meant to document my 2010 journey. Let's just say that if I didn't record some of the highlights of being home I would miss some very important aspects. Food was high on my list of priorities. By the end of my second day of being home I had polished off the majority of my "Home Foods" wishlist. Everyone knows that you just can't beat home cooking- or the foods that symbolise friends and good times. That is why red wine was sitting pretty in the number 1 spot of "to be consumed'. Also up there was beetroot, roast, large quantites of Vegemite, and all the gourmet ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing August 5th 2010

I've been home for exactly 2 weeks now but I needed some extra time to process my thoughts on what I would write for the time I spent in China. Bascially, I think I spent 90% of my time there praying to God. Generally it went something along the lines of: "God, please help me find my way home... God, please let me catch my flight on time.... God, please let this man not be a physco killer". All of these prayers were said at least once during my 5 and a half day stint in China. So, what actually happened I hear you say. I will write a brief account of my China dramas as I intend to catch up with most of you in the next week or so and I have to leave ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Chang August 3rd 2010

So, I may have mentioned that it has been quite a week on Koh Chang. Lisa and I had planned to top up our tans, relax by the sea and enjoy our last few days together in a state of cocktail induced bliss. Not so. After our mission to get here and then a below average accomodation situation we were bummed out but ready to give the island a second chance. We knew it was low season here but this is obviously lower than low. There's like 18 people here or something stupid. Ok- slight exaggeration but the place is dead. This might also have something to do with the fact that it has been raining non stop. No- to tell the story proplerly I better go back to the beginning. We spent our first day ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ko Chang July 29th 2010

I have to write this entry more for my own memory than anything else. The journey to Koh Chang was something else and I don't want to forget all that we went through to get to this island known to most as a tropical oasis, but to us has been something quite different- but that is another entry altogether! We left Pai at 2.30pm on Wednesday afternoon. We had bought a direct ticket to Koh Chang for 1000b. Slightly overinflated but worth it for the convienience. The drive down from Pai was always going to be curvy as the hairpin bends seemed to be never ending. That wet afternoon our driver must have had a grudge against those mountains and decided to taken them on at crazy speeds. We buckled our seatbelts and held on for ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai July 28th 2010

White water rafting was awesome. We left Sunday morning with a group of 30 others. It was a slow start getting everyone organised and into their safety gear. We made the 1 hour trip to our starting point by way of an openbacked ute and even the fresh air couldn't stop me from feeling the effects of the 600 or so curves. Luckily, I felt much better once I got out of the ute and onto solid ground. Just as we were about to climb aboard our rafts it started to rain. Nothing was going to put a dampener on our trip so we just paddled harder to keep warm and waited for the sun to come back out. The rain didn't last long and soon enough the sun was beating down making us hot in ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai July 24th 2010

This is our third day in Pai and we're having a blast! Pai is very much like a Margaret River without the beach. It is much cooler here (guessing about 26-29 degrees), and there are loads of mozzies but that is all I have to complain about. Otherwise, it is cheap, small enough to walk in 20 minutes, artsy and... has good food! I decided to make the most of all this wonderful town has to offer and signed up for a yoga course. Lisa and I spent yesterday with our body in knots and as a result yes, today the muscles are a little tight. It was a great day and we are now pros at breathing- who knew we were doing it wrong! We are now certified yoga do-ers and have made a vow ... read more
