Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid October 23rd 2009

We purchased 2 day transportation passes at the airport Metro station and then started the trek to our hotel. We took the 8 line to Mar de Cristal, transferred to the 4 line to Avenida de America, and finally took the 7 line to Parque de las Avenidas. Once off the subway, it was a quick 5 minute walk to the hotel. The sun was just starting to rise and we could tell it was going to be a great day. It was a little too early to check in to our hotel, so we left our bags there and took a walk in the area to see what we could find. We walked back the hotel after about 20 minutes and had some coffee and croissants at the hotel bar. We were able to check ... read more

Sometimes when flying nonrevenue stand-by, you have to be creative. In this case, the flights to New York were all pretty much full. I don't know what was going on there that weekend, but then again isn't there always something going on in NYC? We left on Thursday morning from Indianapolis to Washington DC on a Delta Connection CRJ and then connected to another Delta Connection CRJ to New York-JFK. That is the creativity we had to use in order to make it to NY that day. It was about a four hour wait at JFK so we sat down at a Chilis for lunch. The Madrid flight was wide open, with 40 seats open in coach and 30 open in business. We cleared for business class about 30 minutes before departure and soon were off ... read more

And I am on that 737, landing over the world famous Maho Beach. I had been planning this little getaway for a few weeks and then I read the news today, oh boy! Tropical Storm Ana was heading towards the island. Well, Ana fizzled out. But then came hurricane Bill. I decided to postpone the trip until the following week. I kept a watch on the weather and saw that Bill was projected to turn north about 300-400 miles from the island and totally miss. Great news! The trip planning was back on. The flights were wide open in each direction since it is low season so I booked a hotel on Wednesday evening and departed Indianapolis on Thursday morning. I flew a Delta Connection Embraer 175 from Indianapolis to Atlanta and got first class. The ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena October 2nd 2008

I had wanted to visit Cartagena ever since watching the movie "Romancing the Stone" Now, the movie scenes from Cartagena were actually filmed in Veracruz, Mexico but that did not stop my desire to visit. I left Indianapolis on the morning of October 2, flying a Northwest DC-9 up to Detroit. I arrived at gate 7 and my connection to Miami was next door. What luck! My next flight was a Northwest Airbus 319. The flights were smooth and on time. I arrived into Miami at around noon and headed over to the Avianca ticket counter. At 2:10 pm, I was on on Avianca MD-80 bound for Cartagena! The two hour flight was smooth and had a decent meal service. I had my first Colombian beer, called Club Colombia but I was not a fan. Europe » Vatican City April 18th 2008

Oh well, That is what made it less crowded most likely. Wow, the church is so massive! It was almost overwhelming to take in the beauty of everything inside and out. I was really in awe of the peace I felt here. We had spent a good hour inside St. Peter's Basilica, looking at all the details. It was crowded, but not overly. We had talked about how quiet it was in there even with thousands of people inside. I know it is out of respect, but still hard to believe the stillness. The Vatican Museum was amazing! I love the details in everything. Even with all our technology, they cannot reproduce the beauty of the walls and ceilings in there. The Sistine Chapel is truly a sight to see! Oh how I wish I could ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome April 18th 2008

Two J Club members meet in Italy! J4 and J5 maybe????????? The idea for this trip was conceived a few months ago while chatting with Jennifer(Jenn79) about our travels. She had suggested meeting up somewhere but the timing just was not right yet. Jennifer had told me that she was going to Rome in April and asked if I wanted to go. Well of course I would! I kept an eye out on the flights and it continued to look good for me to get to Rome, so I booked a hostel and was all set. Finally, the day has come. On Thursday April 17, I get my daughter off to school and head out to Indianapolis International Airport for my Northwest Airlink flight to New York La Guardia. It was a smooth and on time ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo February 9th 2008

I had always wanted to visit Egypt. There are millions of things to see there and two days is not enough, but I did what I could in that amount of time. I left Indianapolis on Thursday afternoon on a Continental Express Embraer 145 to Newark. The NYC area was under air traffic control delays as usual, so I ended up getting there with only an hour to spare for the next flight. After arrival, I checked in for my flight to Madrid. This flight was lightly booked, so I stretched out in my whole row of 4 seats. I arrived into Madrid early Friday morning and headed over to the Cairo flight. The Agent gave me a lot of grief for not having an Egyptian Visa and was not going to allow me to go, ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisboa December 1st 2007

I often do crazy weekend trips and my trip to Lisbon was no exception. On Friday November 30, I headed out to Newark on Northwest and then caught a TAP Air Portugal Airbus 330 to Lisbon. I arrived into Lisbon at 5:30 am and within 30 minutes, I was on bus route 44 to downtown. The cost was 1.35 Euro. There is an airport express bus #91 but it does not start operating until 7:45 am. I walked all around the area near Praca do Comercio and Rua Augusta. I also walked up to Castelo Sao Jorge, which was a rough hike up hills and steps! At around 9 am, I took tram 15 to Belem so I could see the Torre de Belem. It was about a five minute walk from the Centro Cultural Belem ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris October 23rd 2007

We awoke at 6 am and left for CDG airport. Our flight was at 9:30 am and was smooth and routine. We arrived in Detroit at 1 pm. The flight used up all nine scheduled hours due to headwinds. We had about five hours in DTW airport before finally heading back to Fort Wayne. Drove home from there to Indy and that was it! Our daughter loved visiting Paris and It was actually my wifes first time there too. "Last time in Paris was strange"----Queensryche.... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris October 22nd 2007

At least that is what was planned. The transit system seemed to be running closer to normal this day as we headed out to CDG airport for our 2 pm flight to Detroit. We arrived to the counter at about 12:30pm and were told the flight was delayed 20 hours. They were putting everyone in hotels for the night, but since we are non-revenue, we were on our own. No big deal, another day in Paris! My job is extremely flexible, so I called in a vacation day. My wife was off, so it all worked out. We did a relaxing day in the city, but stayed in a Holiday Inn near CDG.... read more
