I have a feeling The French Cafe has become my second home here in China. I come here every day and every time I see some familiar looking faces from college or people I'm already friends with. The waitresses here know me too and it's funny how we have our English-Chinese converstaions. (I try to practise my Chinese with them while they want to practise their English when I'm here.) I usually come here after classes to talk on skype and spend some nice morning moments and then I drop by in the late afternoons. Also during the weekends I tend to spend here loooong hours. Probably once I start working I won't have that much time for it anymore but right now I can still enjoy my lazy Saturday. The atmosphere here is very home-like. ... read more

Today I eventually made it to apply for the resident permit. Once I get it I can start my bank account. Except that I did an important thing that had to do with my research project. And after that I eventually had some time to take a few pictures that some people were waiting for. (They show more or less my every day way to college :/ ) Right now though I'm sitting in the bar I have already friends in enjoying my last free time since I got a job and I start workig on Monday. Where? Maybe on Monday I'll let you know... :) *** Dzis w koncu uporalam sie ze zlozeniem wniosku o karte stalego pobytu. Kiedy go juz dostane moge otworzyc konto w banku. So yesterday I started the Chinese classes. A little bit boring but nice. I have to switch somehow to some slower way of studying as the Chinese teachers seem to take things very easy while the Polish teachers make you handle more than you actually can. Most of the students are Japanese and Korean. But lucklily there are also Europeans and Americans. Some of them look like New Age or Buddhism followers but well... it's China after all. The classrooms of course fulfill Chinese standards... three people sitting at the table that is supposed to be for two. Not to mention the moldy ceilings :) Yesterday me and a new friend of mine also signed up the contract to rent an apartment. It's a pretty tough thing to do here in China... Papers, photos, copies of ... read more

So today I went to get my medical examination record book which seems to be essential to get the resident permit. First, I need to mention though that before coming to China, I had to take lots of checkups which costed x00.00 USD. Additionally four copies of all the results including one in English for which of course I had to pay extra. What is more, filling by a doctor the Chinese physical examination form was not for free either. With all those documents I went to a place which was supposed to be a medical center and where many students were already waiting. In the registration point the Chinese lady told me that the Chinese don't really care about any results from Europe and that we (all the students) had to do everything again in ... read more

People here either do not speak English or they speak English this way... Good they at least added "please" at the end. (picture taken in one of the restrooms) *** Ludzie tu albo nie mowia po angielsku albo mowia po angielsku w ten wlasnie sposob. Dobrze, ze chociaz dodali "prosze" na koncu. First Sunday in China. The Sun started shining. Eventually. And since I'm not able to do any of the formal administrative stuff today, I decided to get full night sleep and spend my Sunday in the French Cafe. It's not really French but the most important... it's not Chinese either. Wooden sofas full of red cushions, cosy inside, lots of those small spots where you can just hide, collect all your thoughts and simply get rest... Lots of foreign people come here, all of them read books, work on the computers or write something in their diary-like things. I have a feeling that many people come here to "run away" from the Chinese culture and what's outside. Today I feel a little bit better but maybe thanks to the Sunday atmosphere of this place. What is ... read more

As many people know, some time ago I was applying for the Chinese Government Scholarship. From the begining everything seemed that I wasn going to get it. Because I was too young, because it was for people with a higher degree... I tried anyway and well... didn work. I thought thats ok, that maybe its even better. My ambition got a little hurt but quickly I just forgot about it. A few months later, I got a call from my college that I got the scholarship. I wasn sure answering the question if I still wanted to go. I guess at that point I had not known yet what it actually meant. I thought though that everything happens for a reason and that maybe my life didn change its mind without a reason. And that maybe ... read more

It's so hot that I'm not able to type... On Friday, the plane had 2 hour delay, then another 30 minutes. And when all the people were on the plane it still took another hour till the plane actually took off. At the Miami airport was just a mess. One big mess. One hour waiting for the bags and then catching a cab and eventually meeting my CouchSurfing hosts. Tohnya and Jeremy, very nice people who came back from Europe from their honeymoon like a week ago. When I told them the airport story they just said 'Welcome To Miami!'. Mess seems to be something totally normal here... Only 1% of people living in Miami are Americans. The rest, as I was told, has ran away some time ago. More than 80% of people are Cubans ... read more

Because New York doesn't only mean Wall Street, Times Square and 5th Avenue or a place presented in the show Sex and the City, today I went to see the Bronx. And well... there is not much to say. One hour by metro seems to be enough to move to a different world. A world in which you can see poverty and where the American dream unfortunately hasn't come true. PS.Tomorrow Miami. *** Poniewaz Nowy Jork to nie tylko Wall Street, Times Square i 5th Avenue czy tez miejsce jakim go ukazuje Sex w Wielkim Miescie , dzis pojechalam zobaczyc Bronx. When for the first time I went to see the Ground Zero, a place in which used to be the WTC twin towers, I hoped to see something that would move me or perhaps even schock me... I hoped it would be the one place in New York where I could discovere something spiritual, something deep what would give us a certain message. This is a place where the biggest terrorist atack took place and where died almost 3000 people. But nothing. 16 acres of an empty space that now doesn't even remind of the people who died. And all the thoughts and reflexions are disturbed by the ongoing construction. It is planned to build there another office building. And who knows if practicality will allow to build some memorial that would remind of all the ... read more
