Moscow comrade!!!!!!!! We arrive into Moscow's 'St. Petersburg' train station in the morning and wander towards the Moscow metro with in trepidation; we have heard various stories about how difficult the Moscow metro is to navigate. We purchase our tickets and head down, the first thing that hits you is the glass / crystal chandeliers that line the ceiling of the station, each station is different with differing mosaics and chandeliers, you don't get them on the London Underground! We studied our maps and the metro map and match up the various words to identify the correct station to alight, we gamble on the train and it pays off, we get the intersection station and off we walk to find the next platform for our final trip. Again we are there books in hand; matching up ... read more

We finally arrive at the major transition stage of our trip, Russia. Transitionary as it covers a vast land mass linking Europe and Asia and it is during this leg that we cover long distances. One of the most interesting changes we are looking forward is to witness firstly: the cultural differences between European Russia and the Far East and secondly: the physical changes, the changes in appearance as we travel from European towards the orient, Japan and Korean. The sheer size of Russia is something to contemplate and as we spend days aboard various Trans-Siberian trains it will become apparent, Russia covers 6.6 million square miles and the traditional Trans-Siberian journey from Moscow to Vladivostok it 5,806 miles. There are three main journeys that cross Siberia, the classic, the Trans-Manchurian and the journey we are ... read more

It was time to head further east and say good bye to wonderful Stockholm. Our ferry was surprisingly large. We discovered after purchasing a walk on ferry ticket that there were not actually any seats you could sit in and sleep in apart from a room with nothing in where you could lie down, so we went to reception in hope that there was a spare cabin we could purchase!!! With luck there was for 40 Euros (below the car deck and with no bathroom) but it was a place to sleep and still feeling rather hung-over G was happier to have a bed to sleep in than a bit of floor. The ferry was more than we expected. It was huge with loads of bars and places to eat. We whiled away the time T ... read more

Today, we set off on another mammoth journey overland to Stockholm. 6 hours of drinking, sleeping and black jacking oh and many cheese crisp butties we arrived. We found our hostel very easily (City Hostel (we think) 50 Euros for 4 bed dorm). FYI, this hostel is well nice, so clean and we highly recommend it. So after a quick shower we ventured out to get our bearings and of course some food, with a map Keaney ripped in half two minutes after buying it up! Typically the bit where it ripped was the bit we needed!!!! Keaney also felt more like the local in the taxi ride back as he was directing the taxi man back to our place, the taxi dude didn't have a clue where we were staying, and mind you it didn't ... read more

It was an early start for us as we made our way to catch the ferry and once again in true G & T style (although this time we can blame this one on Keaney and Leila) things did not go according to plan. The journey to catch the ferry went something like this: Casa K&L (Iserbrook) to Hamburg Central: We did not have time to get tickets so we had to get off at the stop after theirs where more trains run from, only to find out trains were delayed because of works (something we thought only happened in England!!!!). Because of this, bearing in mind we had to catch a train, a bus and a train again, we missed our preferred train to Lubeck. Hamburg Central to Lubeck: Luckily the trains were every hour ... read more

Munich We arrived in Munich early, after a not so good sleep we were disappointed to find out that Munich has no showers (Tony not having washed for 48 hours was in need of one greatly!!!!). So we did what all self respecting backpacker would do and got out the wet ones!!!!! Feeling like tramps brushing our teeth next to people having number 2s we soon emerged slightly cleaner and less smelly ready to sample some of the Bavarian sights and beer halls!!! It did not take us too long to have a look around, Munich is quite a small city. We took in a burst river (too much rain for this time of year), a church, a Jewish museum, a market and by the time we had done all this we were rather thirsty and ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest » Buda June 23rd 2009

Today was the start of our very long (24 hours) journey back up North to Munich in Germany. We started at 6am in Sarajevo and a 12 hour train journey to Budapest with no food apart from 2 bags of crisps, 5 mini Twix’s and a bottle of water oh and G with a slight touch of the runs!!!! Not good. As it happened the journey to Budapest went rather quickly and once we got into Hungary a restaurant cart got attached to the train, but with only enough money on us to buy one small sandwich we once again went "Hungary"!!! Ha ha excuse the pun!!! We got into Budapest at about 6pm, G was hoping the train station was right in the centre so she could see a few sights as she had never ... read more

Mostar After a 6 hour bus journey going through many boarder controls we finally made it into Bosnia. Once in Bosnia we had a rest stop but were not allowed to go to the loo because some old woman wanted paying before letting us in, considering we had just come from Montenegro which uses Euros and Croatia which uses Kuna we could not quite understand how she expected us to pay her!!! She would not accept Kuna so we boarded the bus with our leg crossed and hoped the ride was not too bumpy for the rest of the way. After 8 hours going across 3 boarders we made it to Mostar. Straight away you could still see the lasting effects of the war and bombing in 1993 by the Serbs. Where Croatia had done everything ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor » Kotor June 19th 2009

Today we caught a bus to our next stop Montenegro, we were not originally going to come here but have heard such good reports we wanted to see for ourselves. We caught a bus to the town of Kotor. Montenegro is a relatively new country as it used to belong to Serbia. It is just as beautiful as Croatia, in some places even more. The coast line changed slightly to mountains diving straight into the turquoise blue waters of the Adriatic. Kotor is an amazing bay and like many towns along this coast line has a typical old city wall and an amazing fort high up behind the town. We were staying in another apartment €40 a night plus the added extra of G getting bitten a little bit more, this time by bedbugs (although we ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik June 19th 2009

After our long awaited BNO (big night out) we got an early ferry to Dubrovnik, now this was a ferry, a big ferry, so T was happy, the last two boats have been catamarans where you cannot go outside but with this ferry, outside was the only place you could go. We dumped our stuff in a corner, tying it on to the boat so it did not fall into the sea and chilled for the next 5 hours taking in the Southern Dalmati coast line. Dubrovnik is a beautiful town once described by Lord Byron as the jewel of the Adriatic. It was totally destroyed in 1991 by the Serbs and they have done an amazing job doing it back up. They even went as far as having it done up using old style methods. ... read more
