It was an early start for us as we made our way to catch the ferry and once again in true G & T style (although this time we can blame this one on Keaney and Leila) things did not go according to plan. The journey to catch the ferry went something like this:
Casa K&L (Iserbrook) to Hamburg Central: We did not have time to get tickets so we had to get off at the stop after theirs where more trains run from, only to find out trains were delayed because of works (something we thought only happened in England!!!!). Because of this, bearing in mind we had to catch a train, a bus and a train again, we missed our preferred train to Lubeck.
Hamburg Central to Lubeck: Luckily the trains were every hour so we did not have long to wait for the next one, the journey went smoothly until we got to the end of the line and found out the ferry port was two stops back. With half an hour left until the ferry was due to set off we flagged a taxi and jumped in - thankfully the taxi dude could understand us.
Lubeck to Trelleborg (Sweden): We got to the ferry check in desk with 20 minutes spare. We found out that Keaney had booked us on the ferry for the next day!!!!! As you can imagine the look on our faces was a picture and Leila gave up the pretend sprained ankle we were practising as our excuse for being late. Luckily the check in woman was very very nice to us (would not happen at a Ryanair desk!) and allowed us to board the ferry leaving in 10 minutes, not without giving us a good telling off as she had to call the bus back to pick us up. Still in disbelief we boarded the ferry and found a place to dump our stuff and sit. 7 hours later and after many beers and a good nap we landed in Helsingborg.
Trelleborg to Copenhagen: This journey involved us running around Helsingborg to find the bus station then a cash point, after realising Sweden is not in the euro. We boarded the bus and off we go to Malmo. The rest of the journey was pretty calm so after 4 train journeys, 2 buses and 1 ferry - 15
hours after we left Keaney and Leila's we arrived in Copenhagen. Apparently there is a quicker way to go which takes about 5 hours but where is the fun in that hey!!!!
We found our hostel (Dan Copenhagen 50 Euros for a 4 bed dorm, dumped our stuff and headed out to sample the Danish nightlife.
After recovering from how expensive Denmark is (25 Euros for 3 pints) we got up early to explore the city on bikes. It was baking hot, G being a quick thinker we donned our day packs with bags of vino to have at rest stops to save a bit of cash. So looking like we were carrying a bag of blood and a bag of urine we headed off for a nice long bike ride to see the sights. Copenhagen is a wonderful town but so expensive. NB the mermaid is a let down, she is tiny. It is great to cycle around as it is really flat. Highly recommend the place if you ever win the lottery!!!!!
