Hvar We left Split on our first boat of the trip and headed to the island of Hvar. The Croatian islands have the look and feel of Italy's Amafi coast and the Greek islands but more bite than them, once again, we love Croatia. Hvar is the sunniest place in Europe (apparently) receiving 2724 hours of sunshine each year. Hvar town is gorgeous; it is built within 13th century walls of medieval Hvar. It is marble paved, like split and most old towns in Croatia and very slippery. We were going to camp but we went the wrong way and got fed up of looking for the camp site so we followed two other backpackers who were heading to a hostel, The Green Lizard. It turned out it was fully booked but we got offered an ... read more

We caught another bus from Zagreb to Spilt on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. It all started to go wrong at the coach station, Tony brought two tickets to Split for 200kn each and mistook a 200kn note for a 100kn and effectively handed over an extra 25 quid! We then boarded the "Willy Fog" bus and it literally stopped EVERYWHERE, the journey which was supposed to take 6 hours (according to the lying lady at the Zagreb bus station) actually took 8 and half hours! Luckily we had booked an apartment just on the boundary of the old city, so we did not need to hunt around for somewhere to stay. The “apartment” was a large room with a little kitchen and bathroom, but most importantly this little number had a washing machine!!!! So ... read more

Interesting Fact: (well not a fact but a quote published in Korcula Island) “Travel maintains an appetite for adventure. The eyes of travellers blaze with sparks, while the eyes of those who have not travelled beyond their horizons do not experience this" anonymous. Well what a pleasant surprise Zagreb comes as. We have travelled about 17 hours on a medley of trains and buses and 48 hours after packing up our camping stuff in the rain in Switzerland, we arrive at a coffee shop at about 8am. We were smelly, tired from brat boy's antics and the temperature was rising exponentially, we had to find somewhere to stay the night and shower before we offend the local population and be run out of town to cheers of BURN THEM BURN THEM! So we set about hunting ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich June 9th 2009

After approximately a four and a half hour train journey from Lauterbrunnen we arrived into Zurich. Now every person we have spoken disregards Zurich as a drab, uninteresting financial district hence why we did a whistle-stop tour of the place. We found Zurich to be contrary to this, it had a cool continental cafe bar culture, a very relaxed atmosphere, and a lovely harbour. We only had a few hours to potter around the town before our 12 hour overnight bus to Zagreb in Croatia. So evidentially Zurich was our last port of call in Switzerland, again it is a very very cool town, we have loved Switzerland but it has been an expensive stop on our trip. So the bus.....this bus was so odd, we could not quite figure out what nationality these people were ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken June 6th 2009

Interesting fact: The Swiss invented LSD and Absinthe - not bad for a country of bankers and neutrality! Whilst aboard the TGV train from Dijon to Bern, we are confronted with the sound Click Ching Click Ching Click Ching, wondering what the bloody hell that was, we noticed this chap sitting alone in his seat looking into his mobile phone camera striking a pose and taking a snap of himself Click Ching - not a normal camera sound I know but that was the noise it made, for 45 minutes this dude changed pose and Click Ching!!!!! We arrived late into Bern the Capital of Switzerland so we headed to the nearest hotel which surprise surprise was a 4 star Savoy Group Hotel for 200 Swiss francs and fell into Bed. Yes, Laura one down but ... read more

Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire June 2nd 2009

We arrive into Tours where we did a bit of sightseeing, there was not much here except kebab shops, "elephant legs" where prevalent and could compete with London's Leicester Square. Tours was a transport hub kind of town and our entrance to the Loire Valley. We were heading straight to Chenonceaux, a stunning area made famous for its formidable Chateau - Chateau Chenonceaux. We had already booked our plot at a wonderful, cheap, amazing camp site called Le Moulin Fort, a mere 17 Euro a night BARGIN!!!! So after a 1.5km yomp from the train station in the midday heat we arrived at the site and set about choosing our pitch - one right beside the river. So in true Ray Mears style, T dig out the Swiss army knife and started to cut down a ... read more

As we have both already been to Paris we did not do much sightseeing apart from pottering around, Tony had the world’s most expensive beer, 15 Euro!!! We also had a “Big Sausage” for dinner, which turned out to be a pork tripe sausage YUK!!!! G was glad she did not like it which meant her leaving it and looking rather smug once we found out what it was!! We stayed in a lovely hostel where we got upgraded to an en-suite room, beginners luck hey!!!! Monte Claire Hostel 50 Euros a night. ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » West Midlands » Birmingham June 1st 2009

After feeling like this trip has been planned forever, the time finally came for us to leave London and the UK. After many wicked leaving parties (thanks to everyone who organised them and came), we started our journey at Birmingham International with George throwing up outside the train station in front of her parents ops!!!! A bit too much sun and drink over the last few days we think he he. The train ride down to London did not go as smoothly as planned (it never does with us involved), someone decided to jump in front of a train further down the line so our train was suspended at Northampton. After a slight panic we found out that we could get a taxi over to another train station and get a train from there. Luckily this ... read more
