South America » Argentina July 15th 2005

Argentina - 6 Months I returned to Argentina after cycling from John O Groats to Landsend and spent 3 weeks in Buenos Aires seeing what the night life was all about, and also falling in love with steaks and red wine. From there I went to Cordoba where I decided to stay for 2 months to spend some time improving my Spanish by going out and socializing as much as possible, I made lots of friends while practising. During these months I found time to see where Che grew up as a toddler and to do a little paragliding. After Cordoba I travelled North to Salta to meet another friend and to hire a car with a guy from Holland in order to follow the route of the "Train to the Clouds", which crosses the ... read more

South America » Brazil July 4th 2005

Brazil - 3 or 4 Months Brazil was another country which I visited on many occasions, in fact I think I went to the country 4 times, spending 3 or 4 months there in total. For the first few visits See my "Iquitos to Rio" blog The third time I visited Brazil I entered from Uruguay, with two Friends I was traveling with. We came from Cabo Polonio and hopped along the coast of Brazil stopping in Porto Alegre very briefly and then Barra da Lagoa, a nice town on the island of Florianópolis, sandwiched between two national parks. Here we spent almost 2 weeks, drinking and socialising before heading to the waterfalls at Foz do Iguazu so that I could take my second look at this fantastic location. From Barra da Lagoa I also visited ... read more

South America » Colombia June 11th 2005

Colombia - 38 Days (3rd May - 10th June 2005) I flew with an Israeli friend up to Colombia to spend 5 weeks travelling around. Bogota was like most cities, with its nice buildings and restaurants etc but the coolest thing was the gold museum with its huge collection of pre-Hispanic gold artefacts. From the capital I flew to the north coast and Santa Marta and we went on a 6 day jungle trek to la ciudad perdida, an archaeological site of an ancient city. The city is hidden deep in the jungle and it is believed to have been founded about 800 A.D., some 650 years earlier than Machu Picchu. To enter the city you must first find and then climb up the 1,200 stone steps hidden by dense jungle. As a part of the ... read more

South America » Chile April 4th 2005

Chile - 6 Days - 29th March-3rd April I crossed the border with Peru and arrived in Arica, where I spent a day on the beach, waiting for a bus. I didn't stay long in Chile as it was quite expensive but I did spend 6 glorious days. From Arica I went to San Pedro de Atacama via Calama and spent 3 days touring the driest desert in the world, according to NASA, National Geographic and many other publications. I loved the Atacama desert area, with it's spectacular scenery and thermal activity. It is a virtually rainless plateau west of the Andes Mountains, composed mostly of salt basins (salares), sand, and lava flows. I left Chile when I crossed the Andes and reached Salta, Argentina. ... read more

South America » Peru March 29th 2005

Peru - 2 Weeks I wanted to pass through the country to pass from Bolivia to Chile and decided to take some time to relax after lots of recent hardcore travelling. I spent a week in Cuzco, chilling and just basically absorbing culture. I visited a market in a near by town and enjoyed the easter celebrations. From Cuzco I met a friend from Huancayo and spent a week visiting the Santa Catalina Monastery, some local vinyards where they make Pisco and also plenty of chilling. From Arequipa I continued South to Tacna and then to Arica in Chile.... read more

South America » Bolivia March 16th 2005

Bolivia - A Total of 3 Months I visited Bolivia on three different occasions. 27th Jan - 13th Feb 2004 (17 Days) to see photos of this section see Iquitos to Rio The first time I went to Bolivia I entered from the North, having just travelled along the River Amazon and down the Madeira River to Porto Velho. After I recovered from fever I crossed the river Mamore from the Brazilian town of Guajara to enter Bolivia at Guayaramerin. I spent days trying to arrange a boat trip through the jungle to Trinidad but I was continually told there would be one tomorrow. Eventually I decided to forget about sailing down the river and took a public bus to Trinidad, on what turned out to be a lengthy and eventful journey as the Bolivian ... read more

South America » Paraguay February 18th 2005

Paraguay - 8 Days (9th - 17th Feb) From Iguazu Falls I travelled through Paraguay to Bolivia, taking 8 days to absorb what I could from this little visited, dirty, poor country. I spent 2 days in Encarnacion, so that I could visit the Jesus and Trinidad Jesuit Ruins, preserved religious missions founded by the Jesuit missioners during the colonization of South America in the 17th century. Then I went to the capital, Asuncion to explore all the colonial architecture (the Palacio López was the most attractive thing) but it was your bog standard, nothing special city, so I enjoyed some corn flakes and waited for an American friend coming from Brazil On the way towards Bolivia we stopped at Filadelfia in the Chaco region, right in the heart of the Mennonite settlements. Mennonite settlers came ... read more

South America » Uruguay January 23rd 2005

Uruguay - 25 Days 3 Dec - 11th Dec 2004 I intended to spend Christmas in Buenos Aires but was a bit early to go straight there so I decided to visit Uruguay with a friend and take the ferry across to Argentina. On the 3rd of Dec we took the night bus from Rosario, Argentina to Rosario, Uruguay continuing straight on in the morning to Colonia del Sacramento. Colonia was a nice enough place, cute streets and buildings so we stayed a couple of nights until heading to Montevideo for another couple of days exploring. We found nice colonial buildings and statues like most capitals have. From Montevideo my friend went home and I went to the Benidorm/Acapulco style Punta del Este, for a few days, to enjoy all tourist facilities. Whilst here I hired ... read more

John O Groats to Landsend - 16th May - 13th June 2004 I took a break from South America to go back to the Uk for about 2 months to see friends and family and to cycle from John O Groats to Landsend, the furthest two points apart possible on the main British island. The shortest distance between the northeast and the southwest by road is 874 miles but I took time to see some things and friends along the way cycling about 1100 miles over 4 weeks. I spent the first two days heading west along the scottish coast before I began to go south along the really pretty B871. The countryside in Scotland was beautiful, quite mountainous which made cycling a little tricky but the climbing up rewarded me with some great views. ... read more

Rio to Buenos Aires - One Month I hired an apartment with two friends from England in Rio and after they left I spent one more night to go to a Fat Boy Slim beach party and then i traveled to Ilha grande for more beach scenery and some abuse of caipirinias Sao Paulo was next and was very pleasant, with the usual mix of cool and historic buildings and it was very much like an ant farm with its large number of tower blocks. I stayed with a friend for a week who was nice enough to welcome me and show me round ... obrigado Thatiana Victorelli.
