15th Oct ’11 Playa del Carmen and joining the trip Well it’s still tanking it down and the pool is nearly bursting its banks! We had to check out of the lovely El Acuario and go to the hotel El Elefanta to join the trip, the hotel is ok but rather dingy and no lovely courtyard pool but it does have a lovely comfy bed so that will do for 1 night. We were forced to spend the afternoon in a little reggae pub as the rain was to bad to do anything else! We met up with the group, who seem a nice bunch there are 16 of us in total. We all went out for a meal at a local Mexican place which ended up with a river running down the middle of the ... read more

I kid you not, there I was laid out by the pool, thankfully under the 1 and only sunshade and it bounced off it and went under the little table next to me! The iguana then spent about 5 minutes looking down from the top of the wall behind us trying to find its lunch! Later that night I saw the hotel cat, Coco, speeding along with the dead rat in its mouth. I also came across the hotel tortoise today, which was huge, it’s the one and only time I have spotted him. 13th Oct ‘11 Well I guess it’s time for an update again, so basically it has just been days filled with sun, swimming and reading – wonderful!! Not another flying rat in sight! Not a lot else to say really, we have ... read more

We had a great breakfast of pancakes today cooked by the exuberant Viktor who had clearly survived or escaped home in time to miss the protest drama – maybe there hadn’t been any trouble this year after all. He greeted us with ‘new day new start’ which seems to be his favourite saying and his jolly dancing and smiling! Then it was time to head back to the airport, having decided the only option was to cut our losses and fly to Playa del Carmen where it would be warmer and we could hole up and try and get my ankle sorted. We fully intend to return to Mexico and do the section of the journey we have missed, it really seems a fab country. The journey back to the airport was through much quieter ... read more

Up early for the taxi to the airport and managed to get some breakfast at the hotel (fortunately as no grub on the plane). Got to the airport and limped to check in, limped to queue for security and had to go into a massive backwards and forwards pre- queue before getting in the actual queue! We finally got to the front and then were allowed to go through a short cut due to my ankle. Typically we managed to end up in the slowest xray queue known to man then only to discover we had left the sun cream and insect repellent in the bloody back pack. Lost the suncream but we were allowed to keep the insect repellent??!! (we don’t want you getting malaria said the official!). My stick had to go through the ... read more

Up early and checking emails and the house sale had gone through!!! Hooooorrrrrayyyy! So now officially homeless. We had to walk to the station due to the taxi situation, so me limping along and Howard carrying two rucksacks and the back pack set off. We were just walking along when this black guy crosses the road over to us and asked if I was ok and if then asked if we could use a few dollars! So less than an hour homeless and already being offered money!!! We caught the Pacific Surfliner train and again had to sit upstairs. This time there were no reclining seats as it wasn’t a sleeper train and the tray was to high, so we plonked ourselves in the reserved group area – this meant we could sit opposite each other ... read more

28th September ’11 Update Well the car didn’t get trashed, no bears were spotted but very little sleep was had – to busy listening out for bears!! We were up early so we could get to Yosemite as soon as possible, as it was a Sunday Howard reckoned there would be loads of people going there and parking is limited. The drive through the park to get to the actual ‘scenic yosemite’ area took a couple of hours and was beautiful, all windy road through the mountains, lots of trees and lakes with mist hanging over them, very picturesaue. We got to the parking for Bridal Falls – I had no idea Yosemite was a park of waterfalls so that was a lovely surprise, we walked up to see the waterfall and then carried on ... read more

Death Valley California and Death Valley Junction Nevada Well we managed to get out of Las Vegas fairly easily and I was glad to get away from the mad cap driving I can tell you, so it was back to Howard’s usual mad cap driving but at least there was only one lane on each side of the road! Death Valley was HOT so HOT infact I don’t think I have ever been so HOT as it was there. It was a really barren, arid, dry landscape with mountains. We got to Badwater Basin which was below sea level and you could walk out onto the salt flats, so we did. Well the heat was unbelievable even with a hat on it felt as if you had a burning hot weight pressing down on your head ... read more

Bright light city gunner set my soul, gunner set my soul on fire!!! Viva Las Vegas! Listening to ZZ Tops version while driving through the desert and seeing the skyline appear was quite something! It is mad totally MAD! But very exciting! We managed to find the hotel (the Gold Coast) without too much trouble but the traffic was unbelievable they have 4 or 5 lanes on either side of the road generally and 6 on either side on the Interstate Highway and they all drive at top speed! We checked in, nice room, had a look round, sussed out how to get our B Connected cards so we could get 10% off the buffet and free entries into the American Football Scores Competition (yeah right!). We then spent a couple of hours frying ourselves out ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Bryce Canyon September 19th 2011

19th Sept ’11 Bryce Canyon. Well the most outstanding thing about this park is the rock formations! They are known as The Hoodoos and look just like people!! One is even called Queen Victoria and various presidents have been compared to some of the others! We did a 3 mile hike down from Sunrise Point at the top of the rim to the Queen’s Gardens which although it had steep drop offs I coped with them as they were mainly shielded by rocks, we made our way through rock archways and down to the canyon floor. The rocks were all beautiful reds, pinks and yellows. We then went along Navajo Loop which winds through the rock formations, with trees and shade. We saw birds and chipmunks here and then went back up the trail to Sunset ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Zion National Park September 17th 2011

17th Sept ’11 Cedar City, Utah This was our base for 3 nights allowing us 2 full days of exploring. We set off from Flagstaff that morning and drove to Cedar City via Zion National Park. This was a fabulous park, we both agreed it was our favourite. From the direction we came from we had to drive through a massive long tunnel right through the mountains to get into the park – an unusual sensation but pretty exciting as it was so long and there were occasional windows where you got tantalising glimpses of soaring mountain peaks. The mountains surrounding the canyon were all different shapes and colours, from red jagged peaks to white flat topped mountains with vegetation growing on them, all different heights and all equally impressive. What was particularly unique and special ... read more
