This was a 9 hour journey which was through the Nevada desert, which seems to be where they build prisons perhaps because if anyone was to escape they would just die of heat and exhaustion long before they found any sort of a town! The truck stops were quite interesting and they were blasting out country music and everyone looked like a good ‘ole boy! While we were eating our lunch the tanoy kept announcing customer 41 your shower is ready in room 4 – now you don’t get that happening at Leicester Forest East! Anyway our long LONG day was made even longer by our over shoot of the motel which led to a little detour (of about 1 hour) around the farmlands of Idaho trying to find another motel. We were really off the ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Reno August 30th 2011

Picked up the hire car and set off on the drive to Reno. Enroute we visited the Lassen Volcanic Park, the scenery was fantastic and once again very different to anything we had so far seen, there was lots of snow about, mountain peaks and high altitudes. Eventually we got to Reno and found the Eldorado Casino for our 2 night 'holiday' – thanks to Groupon! (£20 for the 2 nights woo hoo!). It seemed like the height of luxury big plush bed, all the trimmings!! When I say I lost it all in the Eldorado Casino in Reno I actually mean about $7 over the 2 nights, but great fun down to the last few cents and then you win again etc kept us occupied for a good few hours I can tell you. There ... read more

....continues from last entry! Well it’s amazing what you can find when you mooch around, no not anything of scenic beauty but we did find a K Mart – which Abi had told us about and most impressive of all they sold levis for $19.98! and had some in the sale for $11, got very excited and then noticed they were all size 4, somehow I just knew I had no chance!! We did discover they sold quite cheap sleeping bags though and we will need them for when we stay at the Kampgrounds of America sites so at least now we know where to buy them. We also checked out another massive supermarket and spent ages drooling over all the wonderful gallons tubs of ice cream (no we did not buy any), after a bit ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Crater Lake August 27th 2011

Met a couple of bikers from Nottingham this morning who were staying at our motel. They were travelling around on a Triumph Boneville which they bought out in the states and keep over here and use each year for trips! It was great to talk to them, pity we met them just as they were leaving. Today we drove to Crater Lake National Park. A beautiful area and when we got our first look at the lake all I can say is STUNNING, STUNNING, STUNNING! I have never seen anything quite like it, the water was the bluest blue, surrounded by trees, mountains in the background – a truly beautiful place. There was a small island in the lake, part of another volcano. We drove right around Crater Lake, which would have taken about 2 hours ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Klamath Falls August 25th 2011

After a great stay at the Moore Hotel, Seattle we got the free bus (all the buses in the downtown area are free!) to the station for the Coast Starlight train to Klamath Falls – a 12 hour journey (handy hint on the Amtrak trains you have to give your ticket to the conductor at the station who gives you a boarding card – you can’t get on without it). The first 4 hours to Portland are through some stunning scenery (sit on the right hand side for the best views), they had a couple of park rangers on who were explaining what you were seeing and telling funny stories which was really interesting. A lot of the towns are named after the native American indian tribes who lived there originally. The blue rivers (Pugot sound) ... read more

OK so Bonnie is our sleeping car attendant and she seems very nice but she ain’t no Ainsley, so it’s going to be regulation smoke stops only (thank god I have my electronic friend), no loo in the room which I am quite pleased about and once again free water and soft drinks. The observation car is a bit of a cheat its about 5 cars away and everyone can use it – when we booked it was supposed to be just for the sleepers and we thought it was attached but hey ho you still get a great view from the compartment window. The train was running 2 hours late – not really sure why, something to do with having to give priority to the freight trains, this means it’s even longer to the stops ... read more

Stacy bless her took us down to the station to catch the 9.35 sleeper from Baltimore to Chicago, after our goodbyes (see you in OZ) we found our gate etc and then when it was time to board they announced it and sort of sang out All Aboard – magic!!! Couldn’t stop laughing there are some things about America you have just got to love. The train whistles regularly and the theme to Casey Jones just keeps playing in my head. What a curious little sleeping compartment we have it even has a loo and a sink in it, which is good in some respects but rather disconcerting in others – I’m sure you can imagine! Ainsley is our car attendant and a good lad, he is sorting me out for all the smoke stops! ( ... read more

We had a lazy start to the day and Stacy was our tour guide to the sights and delights of Baltimore, what a lovely city, the harbour area was really pretty and we walked around and over to the old area with all its little cobbled streets and original houses etc. We heard the news from 1814 from the town crier!! And then potched around some of the quirky little shops before catching the water taxi back over to the harbour area. We then watched fudge being made (which involved lots of audience participation, singing and jokes) but didn’t get any as Howard was too tight to pay for it! We then managed to buy a sat nav for when we hire the car and we were all knackered so went back to Stacy’s for a ... read more

What a delight and a treat to be staying with Stacy, she really is the hostess with the mostest!! Nothing was too much trouble and she went above and beyond the call of duty in looking after us! I’m not sure Kipling and Kim – her 2 dogs, were as pleased to see us though, but we soon all made friends. Well after the luxury of a real bed, shower, washing machine and brekkie we headed off to the station to catch the comuter train into Washington DC. When we got to the station there was only 1 other person there and it turned out the next train wasn’t for another 2 hours! However the other passenger’s husband turned up and we all got talking and they offered us a lift down to the DC subway ... read more

We arrived in Philadelphia yesterday late afternoon and found our way from the station via the subway to the hostel which was in the old quarter of the city. This was the one I was dreading as it was a shared dorm! The actual hostel was in an old building down a back alley but was a really nice and bright inside. They even provided ear plugs free of charge!! The night’s sleep was better than expected, but still awkward and I think Howard has now learnt his lesson and will not make that mistake again!! The thing that really struck me about Phili was how friendly and helpful everyone was, the guy at the subway gave us a map, told us how to use the system and which train we needed, every time we looked ... read more
