23rd December ’11 Ranthambore to Bundi Another 9 am start – I hope we don’t get lulled into a false sense of security! It was minibuses this time and a 3 hour journey. Today’s pee and tea stop was on the outskirts of a village beside a lovely lake. The toilet was the bushes and the tea plus shop arrived with one man and 2 bags! It was brilliant soon we were all drinking chai and tucking into red hot pakoras which blew your mouth off (so Howard had 3 plus 1 other strange thing no one else could eat). Most of the village then turned up to look at the strange people and slyly photograph us!! We arrived at Bundi at lunchtime (oh my god they had chocolate pancakes!!!!!!!) and we stayed at the amazing ... read more

22nd December ’11 Jaipur to Ranthambore Today we didn’t have to leave until 9 am! We travelled in a much smaller bus with no suspension. It took an hour to get out of Jaipur and then we headed off into the countryside and bumped, rattled and were shaken out of our seats for 3 hours until we reach Ranthambore. We stayed in the Hotel Raj Palace another nice small place. We literally had about 30 minutes to check in, find the room, ram some food in – another typical Indian lunch of rice, dal, curried veg and chapattis and then we were off on a tiger spotting safari! We travelled in army vehicles which have a special name I have forgotten but are basically large, high open topped jeeps. We headed off to the old Ranthambore ... read more

20th December ’11 Madhogarh to Jaipur After waking up and opening my cards and presents from Looci and Andrea which was a lovely way to start the day, thanks! We reluctantly left the fort, walking down the hill as the transport today was an enormous bus! It took about 4 hours to reach Jaipur – partly as the bus was so huge it was awkward trying to get it along the narrow country roads. We entered Jaipur through the ruins of a deserted palace entranceway which then led into the town. It was a huge sprawling place teeming with people, cows and pigs! We really don’t remember seeing pigs in India before, they certainly never have pork on the menu and are apparently kept to eat the rubbish and there does seem to be less litter ... read more

19th December ’11 Agra to Bassi by public bus then open back jeeps to Madhogarh Up at 7ish to get breakfast as there is no food available until 2pm today. We all piled into the public bus (much fretting about bag safety by certain older group members) and off we rattled it was a 4 hour journey but we did have 1 pee and tea stop so not too bad – I even managed to find a kit kat and some cadbury’s chocolate (both made in India). When we got to the jeeps Howard and I sat in the open back section, it was great! Bombing along through rural villages with all of life out on display, camels, pigs and cows all wandering around, men playing cards and women working! We came up to a train ... read more

16th December Karol Bargh, Delhi The overnight train was the usual experience except that this train was slightly cleaner and the toilet didn’t start off stinking, bonus! Neither of us got much sleep unfortunately so we were shattered when we arrived at Delhi at 6.50 am and then had to find the tube station, queue for tickets, but soon we arrived at Karol Bargh, which hadn’t changed much at all. The hotel was pretty close and just off the main street which was full of shops, market stalls and food places. When we checked into the hotel – the Pooja Palace (great name shame it didn’t quite live up to it though) we met Sarah also from England and on our trip and also a smoker! As we all had to wait for rooms to come ... read more

14th December ’11 Jaisalmer to Jodhpur 5.30am and there’s a knock on the door – the alarm hadn’t gone off! So 9 minutes later, we are up, dressed and off in a tuk tuk to the bus. It was freezing cold on the bus but I managed to nod off a few times. The bus was interesting, it had a row of 2 seats down the left side, with sleeping cubicles overhead and down the right hand side both top and bottom were sleeping cubicles too. How anyone could sleep in them was beyond me as you couldn’t exactly stretch out. We found our seats without too much trouble, the rucksacks went in the boot with a few misgivings and we were off. The bus stopped once for a 10 minutes break but we just stayed ... read more

Monday 12th December ’11 Train to Jaisalmer contd I went to sleep on the top bunk, having braved the stinky squat toilet one last time and praying I wouldn’t need it again during the night! I went out like a light then suddenly bam! The lights were all on and people were shouting…… we had stopped at another station! I tried to ignore it all but realised I was freezing cold so re wrapped the blanket round me and fortunately I was soon fast asleep again. I woke up about 8 am so I was pleased with that and just laid there putting off the inevitable visit to the loo! When I opened the curtains and climbed down I got a surprise when I realised that the Indian family opposite had vanished and been replaced with ... read more

Then we arrived in Delhi, the airport is much larger and we got through customs very quickly which made a good change. We only found the new metro station by asking as it wasn’t signed anywhere in the airport, it was very quick and cheap and cut the journey time down to 20 minutes from about 45. Due to time differences it was 8pm when we landed and 9.30pm when we got out at New Delhi. We then had to get across the train station in order to head towards our hostel area. OMG I had forgotten how totally mad India is!!!!!!!! We managed it though, a few false starts but eventually we found the security gate you have to go to get onto the platform areas, up and down and along staircases and walk ways ... read more

8th December ’11 Stockton to Dubai via Newcastle Airport Billy stayed up to see us off and our dear Debs came to pick us up and take us up to Newcastle Airport. It was quite sad saying our goodbyes. We got checked in fine and the flight boarded on time and then we sat on the tarmac for an hour as one bag had been discovered without a tag! Finally it must have got sorted and off we went. Due to time differences we arrived in Dubai at about 1am and spent ages and ages queuing to get through immigration. Eventually we got through, got our bags and jumped in a taxi and were soon at the lovely Rydges Plaza Hotel. This was a cheap option for Dubai but was really lovely and the bed was ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José November 28th 2011

20th Nov ’11 Jaco We are now back to the usual pattern of rain and bits of sun not a lot else to say, doing lots of reading, Howard doing lots of interneting and swimming when we get a chance in between the rain. We had one walk up the beach during a dry spell which was quite nice. Most nights thunderstorms and rain permitting we go out to eat but have mainly stuck to 3 places, the Chinese, the KFC and the Chicken place – everywhere else is very expensive and the food wasn’t so good at the one nice restaurant we tried. There are no souvenirs worth buying they all look like chat and are really pricey. Only real thing to report was one evening a bloke was walking down the road with a ... read more
