Geo: 42.7066, 11.9774Yay the girls are coming today. So very excited. Woke this morning to the lady in the room next door falling down the stairs at the hotel. The ambulance came then she was back later with a cut to the head and a big headache. All ok though. I toured the underground caves in Orvieto this morning. They were dug out BC and then used for centuries as strongholds, temples, olive oil processing areas, bomb shelters and now wine cellars. I visited 2 of 1200 caves under the city.Met more Americans. They just love to say "hey it's an Awwwsie". What is with that? They really do think they are the centre of the universe. Found a market as well. Mum gets ANOTHER present!!! Now I need to wait for the girls to arrive ... read more

Geo: 42.7169, 12.1113Yesterday on the wine tour we laughed at a single carriage train we saw twice, packed to the brim with passengers, seated and standing. Well turns out that was my train for today. Thankfully I had a seat on the 1.5 hour ride, packed without air conditioning. It's fun - all part of the adventure. I arrived in Orvieto mid afternoon. It's a another gorgeous town perched on a cliff. Took a furnicular train to the top to get to town. This is where I will meet Sue, Ginnetta (G) and Deb tomorrow. The will arrive with the car from Rome, enjoy lunch and spritz in town and then head out to our villa, Lugascello, in the countryside. I will have them for company now until my trip ends. It's gonna be a hoot! This ... read more

Geo: 43.0446, 11.4884Slept in this morning and missed my dry cold toast. Got to sleep at 4.00am so wasn't too fussed. This afternoon I took a tour of the Brunello wine region of Montelcino. The countryside is beautiful and the village sits atop a hill. It had a fort that was very interesting. There were only eight on the tour so I sat up front of the van with our guide Christiano. He was great, ok so I had a huge crush on him. We chatted the whole tour and ignored the other guests. I thought he was going to invite me for a drink but then said he lives with his girlfriend. I didn't want her to come so I didn't pursue it any further. Shame. Off to Orvieto, Umbria tomorrow.... read more

Geo: 43.3187, 11.3305I arrived in Siena on Tuesday via three trains. I am an expert at this now. Oh except for the conman at the Pisa station. He was hanging around the shop and told me it was compulsory for me to pay him government tax on my ticket. I had heard about these guys scaring tourists into handing over money. I pretended I didn't understand English or Italian. He went away. Sorted myself out on the map and took to the streets. Siena has the largest piazza I have seen, Piazza del Campo. It is fantastic. It slopes like a sink on its side and everyone lays around in the sun for hours all gazing in one direction toward the Palazzo Comunale. I was tempted to sit at that area and face the opposite direction ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Lucca May 5th 2012

Geo: 43.843, 10.5085-7 MayLucca is a lovely city, obviously much quieter than Florence and Venice but still plenty to see and do. The city is surrounded by a wall used to protect it in war times. There is a road on top of the wall and the walk around it is 4km. It poured all day on Sunday and the shops are closed so I walked most of the way around and called into the Lucca Gallery of Contemporary Art. There was a very strange exhibition on called Paint where the artist started on white canvas, colored the majority of it with black lines and then used different textures of white paint to cover it all. I think the aim was to use white as colour whereas we usually start with white and introduce other colours ... read more

Geo: 44.1086, 9.732961 MayArrived in Manarola today after two comfortable train rides. The last section of the ride was through a tunnel and then we popped out on the side of the cliffs up against the ocean. Outstanding. It is absolutely beautiful. The trek up to the B&B with my suitcase was tough but I knew to expect that. A good reason I hadn't done much shopping. The village is very small. A handful of restaurants specializing in seafood and pesto, a couple of delis and tourist shops. It is lovely and a great place for a rest. Had a lovely meal with some girls from New Zealand and met Fillipo the restaurant cat. 2 MayThere are many hardcore hiking trails in the Cinque Terra although a few are still closed following the mudslides last October. Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence April 28th 2012

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Arrived in Florence after a full day on the train. I found all of the high speed direct trains fully booked so took three trains to get here. Was lovely to see the Tuscan countryside and take a break from walking (although yes I was nervous about the train connections, pickpockets, getting lost, mugged, hijacked, etc).Arrived at my lovely hotel and skipped straight to the Uffizi Gallery. 430pm = no queues! Fantastic! Made sure I saw all the masterpieces and made out I knew what they represented and ohhhh'ed and ahhhh'ed at the right times. Then needed a prosecco. Found the Clubhouse where I could have a wine glass FULL of prosecco and buffet appetizers for €6. Outstanding. I think I love Florence. 29 AprilDay 2. Checked out the Galleria dell' Accademia. Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 25th 2012

Geo: 45.4345, 12.338425 AprilSo the scary train ride I expected from Roma to Venezia was easy. Not such a great start when the power at the Rome B&B off, so no shower and horror no hair washing or drying. I look a fright. There was a festival in Rome so my planned budget bus ride to the station became a last minute run and taxi ride but I made it. So proud of myself! Not sure what to make of Venezia yet. It is beautiful and unique with the alleyways and canals but absurdly busy. People pushing everywhere. Glad I'm out before the weekend. Shops everywhere but very expensive. Might be an early night tonight as I am quite overwhelmed. My room at the Casa Cosmo is lovely Start afresh tomorrow. 26 AprilOff to the fresh veg ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome April 24th 2012

Geo: 41.8959, 12.4724Have found my way back to my favourite square again. It has just started raining for the first time so must retreat to a wine bar for a rose. Shame. It has been cold today, but just like Manjimup weather. I think my future husband is sitting at the table next to me, but he seems busy so I won't speak to him. Visited the Colosseum. Have to say it is a bit shabby and in need of a facelift. Must write to the Roma shire council when I get back home. It is difficult to image what went on there and I will need to read some more in the next few days. Also viewed the Pantheon which is outstanding. The hole in the centre of the Dome is bizarre. Apparently rain rarely ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio April 23rd 2012

Geo: 41.9038, 12.4508What a huge day. Took a guided tour of the Vatican. Aside from the quite overwhelming religious aspect, the frescos, tapestries, sculptures, mosaics and artworks were mind-blowing. The tour meant we skipped the lines, hundreds of people at each location. The museum taught me a lot about the history of Christianity. The Sistine Chapel was beautiful. How Michaelangelo created that ceiling, in those days (years), I don't know. St Peters Basilica was massive and amazing. I touched the feet of the bronze St Peter as the pilgrims do, and said a prayer in the prayer room. Met two girls from Perth who invited me to lunch. Nice to speak to someone other than myself for while. Turns out they know a very good friend of mine in Perth and will see him next week!I ... read more
