Geo: 40.6344, 14.602620 MayToday we headed off in the car for Amalfi. Interesting drive. The first challenge was to reverse the wagon out of the parking lot into the narrow alley. Took a bit of maneuvering but G did it. So off to Amalfi, the next village down the road. Scary drive! The buses are the problem again. We can't fit on the road with them. Thankfully we don't have any bingles, it's a beautiful day and we find a large parking garage. Amalfi is nice but somewhat tacky and full of tourists. Souvenir shops get a bit boring. I did buy a great canvas with a Vespa in it, oh and a pair of shoes, so a successful day. Had a fantastic lunch, gelato and then drove back home late afternoon. We are staying at ... read more

Geo: 40.6118, 14.524It's a sad day. We packed and left Lugascello to drive Deb to the Orvieto train station. After a few tears we waved her off on her train ride to Rome and then flight to Heathrow. We've had a fun week together and we're not sure when we will all see each other again. Now Sue, G and I are off to the Amalfi coast for the week. Every time we mention to someone we are driving to Amalfi (well G is) they raise their eyebrows and grin. G has done the drive before so knows what to expect, but I'm not sure. I'm imaging sheer drops to the ocean and near misses with the crazy Italian drivers we have been experiencing the last week. Perhaps crazy Italian drivers with gold medallions and hairy ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Orvieto May 18th 2012

Geo: 42.7165, 12.1116What a fantastic day today. This morning we attended at cooking school. Just the four of us with Lorenzo and Jake at Zeppelin Ristorante in Orvieto. 9.00am start with lattes and pastries. The restaurant is award winning and we are cooking today with the restaurant chefs surrounding us, cooking for the guests. Although Lorenzo (Chef) and Jake (Medic - he's a nurse) are all ours for four hours. We learn to make pizza dough (a huge quantity) and make five different slabs. We make pasta from scratch and then prepare with a scrumptious pork and asparagus sauce. Next is a pork stew which is divine. Also a caponata (like a ratatouille - tomato, eggplant, capsicum). Finally a huge tray of tiramisu that Sue slaves over for ages, piping rosettes on top to complete. We ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Narni May 17th 2012

Geo: 42.5165, 12.5266Managed to visit two towns today. The first was Lake Bolsena, a very picturesque village set near a massive lake. To me it was nothing like the rest of Italy I have seen, although I believe the Lakes District in northern italy (where George Clooney hangs out) is similar. Bought myself a handbag here!We then moved across to Narni. This was a medieval village with completely different architecture to any other towns I have visited. We arrived home tonight just in time to meet Simona who delivered our cooked dinner of veal saltimbocca with grilled vegetables and potatoes. Tough life!... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Cortona May 16th 2012

Geo: 43.2741, 11.9878Another hilltop town today however Cortona is the town where large chunks of Under the Tuscan Sun were filmed. I was sort of hoping my trip would have worked out like that story, but no. We had a nice day wandering around, enjoyed another great lunch and found the roads a breeze as G is nos becoming more "italianesque" with her driving style.Arrived home to find a snake sunning itself on the front path at the house. Only about two feet long but the girls didn't hang around outside for long! It was too fast to get a photo.... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London May 15th 2012

Geo: 42.7066, 11.9774Today I'm not feeling 100% so I decide to stay at Lugascello while the girls visit Orvieto. What a mistake that turns out to be. At 11.30am I went back to sleep until about 1.30pm. I need to hang some washing out so I go out the back door and the door blows shut behind me. Shit!I know there is a spare key in a lock box outside. Thankfully G had mentioned she would remember the code as the house manager is 10 years younger than her. It takes me a few minutes to work the code but I have the key. The key won't go in the lock. Not the front. Not the back. Not any door. The keys are still in the doors on the inside so won't open. For the next ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Spello May 14th 2012

Geo: 42.9898, 12.6719Now Sue's boss has a business associate we decided to visit in Spello. It's a small village, however we didn't see much off it. We asked the first shop if they knew where to find Roberto at the Enoteco something or other. Of course they knew him and pointed the way. Roberto is the proprietor of Enoteca Properzio. It is like a fine bottle shop also providing fine foods. We met Roberto and then the fun began. We were warmly welcomed by he and his brother,Carlo. Did we want lunch? We had just eaten and just wanted to say hello. We were encouraged to sit down and Roberto appears with a "very important" bottle of 1995 Assisi Rossi he wants us to drink. So we do. The waitresses scurry around and prepare two platters ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi May 14th 2012

Geo: 43.0702, 12.6175Back in the car today. We are off to Assisi. It's pretty cold again. Assisi is the spiritual capital of Umbria. It is beautiful. St Francis of Assisi was born here and one of the most moving places I have visited is downstairs from the lower church of the Basilica di San Francesco: the crypt of St Francis where the saint's body has been laid to rest. We did some serious shopping. I bought a painting ready to go on the lounge wall at home. It's fabulous. After a very average lunch we were back in the car and on the winding road.... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Spoleto May 13th 2012

Geo: 42.7453, 12.7384We get to Spoleto to find many streets closed. They are running the equivalent of a bob-sled race down the cobble stone streets. Everyone is out to watch. We enjoy wandering around the town, viewing the race from different points. The competitors are all very serious in their Lycra, even if we think they look ridiculous and the event is crazy. We get back to Lugascello early evening after G has travelled some very narrow winding roads. She is doing a great job and hasn't driven on the wrong side of the road today.... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Todi May 13th 2012

Geo: 42.7802, 12.4085This morning we head off from Lugascello on the first of our week's worth of road trips. We zip off, well actually casually motor off, in our Ford diesel family wagon. I'm not actually too impressed with this as I had envisioned the four of us in a red convertible, scarves blowing in the wind with our Chanel sunglasses on. Not quite. We are rugged up in jackets, scarves and socks looking like tourists. Also the GPS doesn't work so I'm appointed navigator, G is driver. Good luck!Anyhoo, we arrive in Todi mid morning. It is another hill town but we come across an antique market and mum gets yet another present. She would love this place! We pretend to view the sights, ie cathedrals and piazzas, but then find a lovely restaurant with ... read more
