Geo: 41.89, 12.4744Today we had to leave Sicily and fly back to Rome for our last five days. Sicily has been great, rustic, dry and a little bit dirty, with brilliant food and wine. The hotel owner drove us the 45 minutes or so to the Palermo airport. At one stage I noticed the speedo at 160km/hr, it was a quick trip. We arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare! We were taking an Alitalia flight to Rome which was delayed an hour. G and I waited patiently in an orderly manner in the line to board. The minute the boarding notice came up, the Sicilians all pushed into the priority cue and somehow managed to board. Looking back at the remaining cue I don't think there were any Italians in it. Something to ... read more

Geo: 37.8531, 15.2878We had decided we would have a relaxing day at the resort today. Turned out I didn't feel so well so after breakfast we returned to the room to read, write emails, etc. While I had a nap G did some study. We moved to the pool for lunch and some relaxing mid afternoon. By late afternoon I was feeling better so we still managed to have dinner at the terrace restaurant and knock off another bottle of Rose!!... read more

Geo: 37.8531, 15.2878After a crappy night in Catania we were busting to get away to our next stop. We had booked a deluxe room at a resort and spa in Taormina for four nights. This was to be our luxury time and we could laze about for a few days. Did I mention yesterday that I bought THE BEST PAIR OF BOOTS EVER in France? Our helpful taxi driver from the night before picked is up mid morning for a 40 minute drive to the resort. The Taormina Riviera is much like the Amalfi coast, although the countryside is very dry. It is hot in Sicily. We arrive at the resort and are allowed to check in to our Junior Suite on arrival! We have been upgraded to a much bigger room and I lost G for ... read more

Geo: 37.503, 15.0882We were leaving France today so spent the morning having a late breakfast at the hotel and checking out. The staff at the Ibis have been really great. At midday we caught the bus into Aix-en-Provence to do some last minute shopping of items we had spotted earlier in the week. I bought THE BEST BOOTS EVER after thinking about them for a few days. Had an excellent lunch of Moules‑frites (mussels with a cream white wine sauce and fries). Yummo. And more Rose of course. The friendly waiter (see photo) plied us with some apple flavored spirit following lunch, nice but strong (the drink). We then picked up the car and drove to Marseille airport for a no frills flight with Ryanair to Catania, Sicily that night. The terminal was very basic however ... read more

Geo: 43.5249, 5.45414We had spent the past two days travelling the Provence countryside with Jane's help but some days it seemed we were travelling right alongside the motorways or taking the longer, scenic route although we had asked her for the fastest route. Perhaps G just wasn't driving fast enough. I played with the GPS last night and found a setting "avoid motorways". Oh. That's why. Now unchecked. Today we travelled to Avignon via the motorway. Who knew the motorway ran right alongside our hotel and we didn't need to work our way through the centre of Aix every peak hour, morning and night. Bad, bad Jane. Quick drive to Avignon and our first stop was a 2 hour audio tour of the Palais des Papes, the Popes Palace. This place is massive. It is one ... read more

Geo: 43.5249, 5.45414We had a good night at the Ibis so were ready to head out into the Provence countryside. We had only signed G up to drive in France, perhaps so didn't like my driving in Italy? We did have Jane, our GPS, so navigation was going to be much easier. We visited the village of Roussillon. It is a beautiful village with lots of shops and quaint churches to visit. The first stop was a piazza at the base of a tower and I could see I was going to get my cat fix here. We climbed steps up to take advantage of the views. At the top was a church and asleep inside was a moggie who was not bothered by tourists at all. We enjoyed a great lunch and a French rose, ... read more

Geo: 43.5119, 5.46623Buffet breakfast was provided at the hotel this morning. I don't like French breakfasts. We caught the bus into the city centre of Aix-en-Provence - much easier than taking the car and finding parking. We were dropped at a majestic fountain, La Fontaine de la Rotonde. Apart from the Trevi (which was undergoing maintenance), this would be the grandest fountain we have seen. Aix comes from the Latin word Aquae, and fountains form an integral part of Aix-en-Provence. We visited the tourist bureau where you have to cue for hours to get a tourist brochure. Forget it. We wandered around town taking in the sights and the shops but I wasn't really that impressed. Just another town. Not much atmosphere. The rain was coming in so we chose an undercover restaurant to spend some ... read more

Geo: 43.5119, 5.46623We woke this morning to find Francesca had prepared us a gourmet buffet breakfast. We only had 30 minutes to enjoy it as we need to make our way to Venice airport for a flight. I was very pleased to learn Francesca has three cats and I met Freda, who has a great life roaming around the villa gardens and basking in the sun. It wasn't too bad finding our way to the airport and we made it in plenty of time to drop off the hire car, for G to go shopping and for a quick lunch. We were travelling to Marseille so the Air France flight felt much like just catching a bus. We were only in the air about 90 minutes and we were there! Picked up our next hire car, this ... read more

Geo: 44.4944, 11.3492Today we needed to leave Tuscany. Franco came to meet us for check out at 1000am and we were on the road for Bologna. The drive was a couple of hours and then it took us a bit longer than it should have (ie lost) to find the B&B. We found it, and checked in. Our host Francesca was lovely and the B&B was a nice surprise by Italian standards. Beautiful lush surroundings, modern decor, excellent shower and very comfortable. We quickly unpacked and jumped on a bus for the old town. Bologna is a walled city and the buildings are very grand. Our first stop was a market at Piazza Minghetti. Spotted a few things to buy already!! Francesca had provided us a walking map so we followed that for a few hours to ... read more
