Monday 27th Decided to do a drive around today - headed over the bridge towards Loxton and checked out the houseboats on the other side of the river to where the caravan park is. Then onto Loxton - just an ordinary town but on the Murray River, then headed to Banrock Station Winery, did some tastings and left with 1/2 dozen wines, 3 white and 3 red for $80, not bad for wines bought at a winery. Beautiful setting on 1,800 hectres with 250 hectres under vines - most of the property is wetlands and natural bush. Had lunch at Lake Bonney, Barmera - just another beautiful setting for lunch. Lots of small ducks swimming around on the lake with the sun shinning over the water.... read more

Sunday 26 June Today we took the bikes off the front of the caravan and went for a ride around the marsh (or Billabong) just in front of the caravan park, then along the Murray River and into town for a little shopping. The weather was just beautiful again so we walked into town again in the afternoon. Butternut Pumpkins are in abundance here at the moment so I have been doing a little cooking. Pumpkin soup, pumpkin scones, roasted pumpkin salad, pumpkin fritata etc - tomorrow I am going to make a pumpkin fruit cake and maybe a chicken and pumpkin curry. John says he does not like pumpkin but he is eating everything I cooked. I was checking the camera today and came across some photos I took back at Port Augusta of some ... read more

Saturday 25th June After a very cold night in Burra we set off toward Morgan, planning on an overnighter but when it only took us 1 hr to get there we decided to carry on to Berri (another three hours on). Our first sighting of the Murray River was at Morgan, then we sighted it on and off on the way until we came around a bend just before Waikerie and then all of a sudden we come across a ferry crossing (our first). We were not sure what to do and the man operating the ferry just waved us onto the ferry (caravan and all) and off we went across the Murray. As you can see by the photos - it was not a very wide crossing but it was our first, so the reason ... read more

Wednesday 22nd June 2011 We have spent the day packing up - we are going to leave Port Augusta this time. John finished working for Jimmy Martin yesterday - Port Augusta has been very good to us with the weather being a little cold but very little rain and nice sunny days. We have had plenty of sight seeing to do with plenty of day trips around the county side but we are ready to carry on with our travels. We are going to start heading north towards Queensland where we will look for some more work where the weather is a little warmer. I am recovering from a fall last week where I landed face down on the cement out side the caravan needing to have a gash over my eye glued up. So of ... read more

Sunday 5th June 2011 John worked all week again and Saturday was a rest day so Sunday was our day out. So we headed off down Eyre Highway to Crystal Brook - again a very old quaint town - had morning tea here - a little cold in the wind. Lots of well maintained quaint old homes - it is so good to see people so proud of their heritage that they look after the old buildings. Crystal Brook is the gateway to the southern end of the Flinders Ranges so I think we have just about seen the whole length of the Flinders Ranges from the south all the way to the North at Arkaroola. The area around Crystal Brook is rural with wheat and sheet farming so the scenery all around this area was ... read more

Sunday 29th May Today we headed towards Orroroo to have a look around - what a very quaint old town with many of its old homes very nicely renovated and very well looked after. First we stopped and looked at the Giant Gum Tree which is estimated to be over 500 years old and is approx 10.4 mtrs (34ft) in circumference, then visited the Tank Hill Lookout (great view over Orroroo), Pekina Reservoir and Pekina Homestead ruins, the Lions Park Pekina River Park where I took the reflections photos and we saw some Aboriginal Rock Carvings, then had our lunch on the park tables in the middle of the main street (very nice spot and a great way to use up the very wide road down the main street) then headed to Magnetic Hill where we ... read more

Saturday 28th May John has worked all week so needed a rest day today so we decided to take the bikes of the front of the caravan, to get rid of the cobwebs, for a nice easy ride around the city - only the second time since we left WA. Rode from the caravan park, over the old bridge and around the city foreshore then around the gulf - just a great cycle path (flat and a very easy ride) - we rested at the picnic area near the end of the path then decided to tackle the last bit of the path not realizing it was a 4WD track, a little tough on our legs. When we reached the end we decided to head back home using the roads instead of heading back on the ... read more

Sunday 22 May 2011 Wet and cold today so thought a drive would be better than sitting around in a cold caravan. Invited Margaret and John to join us to visit Melrose and we had a great day. Showed them Hancock Lookout - even though it was a cloudy we still managed to see the stunning view (the wind was very cold though). Walked around the town checking out all the very old buildings - Melrose Surveyed in 1851 but some of the buildings are older than that and still standing today - many still in use. The cloud was hanging over Mt Remarkable all day. Checked out all the eating places for some lunch - the first hotel was too costly but an interesting old renovated hotel, the blacksmith cafe was booked out (it looked ... read more

John's work has come to an end so it is time to head off on our travels again. We decided to see the Flinders Ranges so we decdied to start at Leigh Creek. - The caravan park was good and cheap $20pn - Leigh Creek is a coal mining town - the town being built for the workers after the town was moved so they could mine coal and is very neat and tidy - I guess it is a closed town - (no job no home!!!). We left the caravan at the caravan park and head to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary- as we were not sure what to expect we packed a overnight bag just in case. The drive to Arkaroola was 133klms of gravel so we had a few river crossings on the way. To ... read more

John came home from work and said he had a bad toothache on the tooth he had a root canal job on back in Geraldton only about 3 months ago - we were not impressed - managed to get an appoitment the next day with a dentist in Port Augusta - just before we went to bed he said the tooth felt loose. He woke me up about 4am and said the tooth has just fallen out and now the pain was gone. We cancelled the appointment and the gum has healed up well. Quite a relief. On Friday we settled in for the big wedding (William and Kate of course), setting our chairs up outside the door of the caravan as it was still quite warm outside - the people in the next caravan came ... read more
