We started the day by being woken up at 5am with a knock on our cabin door saying we would be in Lao Cai station in about 30mins so we got our things ready and waited for the train to stop. We soon arrived but we hadn’t sorted a ride to Sapa. We got taken by some locals that said $5 dollars pp which we said ok to but they loaded our bags in the bus and just took off. They left us in the van for about 40mins...While they were gone I was talking to another couple in the van next to us and they had been waiting for over 1 ½ hrs. The driver came back with more backpackers to fill the van and we were on our way... We made our way up ... read more

We got up early today to make our way by mini-van to the airport to fly out to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam as part of our next leg of the holiday. It was an early check in at the airport so had to leave the hotel by 5am. Was a short flight to Ho Chi Minh around 1hr 40mins and as we landed we had to get our Visa’s processed. That took around 30mins to do which was great. We were expecting it to take longer than that. We headed out of the gates and out of the International Airport. It was a short walk down to the Domestic Airport. This is where we were boarding our flight to Hanoi with Vietnam Airlines…our flight was at 11:45am so we had a look in the shops, ... read more

Well the day started a tad bit early with Frankie waking up at 6:30 and wanting to watch t.v..so we soon got up and headed out for some brekkie at Novena mall. Then headed on the MRT to Universal Studios which was about 30min away. We had 2 train swaps along the way and the trains are packed, so many people but its no stress and everyone is carrying on with what they are doing. The Singapore MRT lines are just fantastic! So easy to use and so efficient. We soon got off the train at Harbour Front Station and made our way over the boardwalk to Sentosa Island, where Universal Studios is located, as well as a ton of other sites. We got our passes and headed through the gates. First we headed to Madagascar ... read more

Well we started the day with a 4:30am alarm and pulled ourselves out of bed, got dressed, then jumped in the Ute and made our way to Gold coast for our 9:30 flight to Singapore. We didn't have long for brekkie after we checked in as we sat down to eat, then the call was made for boarding. The plane took off over the Goldie and then headed inland over Australia up to Darwin, as we were heading up to Darwin the captain said we would have a lot of turbulence past Darwin. He wasn't kidding. The flight was pretty up and down the whole way to Singapore and the seat-belt sign was on for over half the flight.. We landed and grabbed our bags and decided to catch the MRT to the hotel as we ... read more

Today was another early start as we had to be up at 5am to drive to the ferry terminal in Georgetown, meet up to hand over the car and then catch the 6.30am ferry in order to be able to get the 7.30am train to KL. All went smoothly till we got to the ferry terminal at 6.15am and tried to find someone from the car rental company to hand over to. We waited till 6.30 exactly and no-one had showed up. There was no way we could miss this ferry as we would miss the train. In the end we had no choice but to leave the car parked in the car park (if you could call it that) with the keys in the car. We were really worried that the car would be stolen ... read more

Ok, so today we headed up the peak of Penang Hill by way of Funicular railway. This was very similar to the peak ride we had in Hong Kong but I’m sure this one was steeper in parts. Either way it was a great ride and the view from up top was fantastic. I am quite surprised at how quickly these things move. There are slower patches but when they move, they move – or maybe it’s just because I’m a scaredy cat and it feels like it’s moving faster than it actually is. We didn’t have the clearest day but that didn’t matter. It was still great to be up there. Once up there we had a fabulous surprise. We saw our neighbours from over the back. We knew we were on Penang at the ... read more

Today we were going to make our way into Georgetown to have a look around and see a few sights, so after brekkie we all piled in the car and made our way there. It took about 35mins as the traffic was a bit busy. We found a park near Fort Cornwallis where early Englishman, Francis Light and his crew landed in 1786 and built the original fort. We looked around for a while and took a few pictures and read about the history of the fort and what the fort stood for as its one of the only star designed forts around til this day. We walked up to the main corner were the gunpowder and the explosives were kept. The bunker the walls were about 300-400mm. There were a number of cannons that were ... read more

Today we were up and out as we had a very busy day to pack in. Firstly we drove approximately 15 mins to the Penang Butterfly Farm. We had a guided tour around the gardens and saw all types of Butterfly’s and Insects. We got some really good info about them as the guide was very good. We walked around for a while and the girls got to touch a millipede and had a photo with a scorpion. Then we headed into the insects and reptile enclosure for a look at spiders and lizards and Scorpions which was cool and in Air-conditioned. We could not get over how hot and sticky the gardens were. Frankie was feeling it a lot poor lil man. We guessed that it must have to be hot though for them. We ... read more

Our first day on Penang was spent sleeping in till about 10. We spent the day lazing by and in the pool. As you can probably tell by now we haven’t stayed in any hotels on this trip. We planned our trip on staying in apartments – so much easier with the children and a lot more room than the average hotel room. The pool is just awesome here and the girls have been having a blast on the slide....doesn’t take a lot to keep them happy. The weather here is very balmy. Just the way I like it. A lot more comfortable than Hong Kong as it was their slightly cooler time of the year. Stu will tell you that he preferred the weather in Hong Kong though. After we got our rental car we ... read more
