March 26th, 2008. Hi Friends and Family, ’Sorry that I haven’t updated this blog since, but being at home is not like being on holiday! Things to do, people to see, places to go. I mean, Berlin IS a funky town baby. Anyway, here we go….. Some of you already know that I like history and museums so today was going to be a cultural day. First, to the most important place of all - Castelo de Sao Jorge. What an impressive place. It’s a splendid castle perched on top of Lisbon’s highest hill and from which you can see over the city and across the Tagus River. The castle’s formation was laid in 138 BC and the Moors arrived in 711 and stayed for 400 years. After a dramatic four month “Siege of Lisbon” in ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, We were going on a day trip to Sintra. Sintra is the former summer residence of Portuguese royalty and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. It boasts two extraordinary palaces, a semi-tropical garden and a Moorish castle with views over Lisbon! We took a train from the Rossio station in Lisbon and 45 minutes later, we were in Sintra. Apparantly, its a common commuter route as trains leave every 15-20 minutes! We bought a Day Rover ticket for €9 as we wanted to go to a few places including the famous Caba da Roca. We waited for bus 403 as this was the bus that would take us to Caba da Roca or Cape of Rock. Caba da Roca is a coastal resort and is the most westerly point of mainland ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, Our breakfast this morning was scrambled eggs and 2 slices of toast served by the hostel staff and help-yourself tea, coffee, cocoa and juice. We were still hungry so we asked for another batch and the ladies were happy to oblige us. The plan today was to go to the "Bairro Alto", the "Baixa / Chiado" and the "Al Fama" areas. The "Baixa" is the 18th Century part of the lower town which is surrounded by hills and a network of cobbled streets. "Chiado" is Lisbon's most elegant shopping area and the "Alfama" is the oldest and most traditional part of Lisbon and seems to be a village within the city. We didn't want a "guided look" of the "Alfama" so we just immersed ourselves into the area and followed the streets ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, As promised, I said that I would be travelling to Portugal and indeed, here I am! Yesterday was Easter Saturday and also the birthday of "The Small Young Gentleman". He had had his birthday party on Good Friday and Saturday was thus spent relaxing and doing something with my hair! By 7. p.m. I hadn't started packing not to talk of finishing it! By 10 p.m. I was done with everything including no longer wanting to go out for a few Easter drinks with my friends... I set my mobile to 4.a.m and woke up with a jolt when the alarm screamed into my ear. A quick bath, pate and cheese sandwiches, the final squashing of my suitcase and then I practically leapt out of the house as the bus was about ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, It’s our last day in Oberhof. We’ve been having such a wonderful time. It’s just great to be here in the country. Today, it was time to do some cultural stuff and some lets-get-dirty-in-the-snow stuff! I checked out the possibilities of the day and rang up a lady that organised horse-pulled traps about the village. We had hired a private horse and buggy on the Aran Islands in EIRE ( The Republic of Ireland ) and that was a great experience. "The Small Young Gentleman" was three years old then and promptly fell asleep as soon as he was all tucked in. The Irish driver was so calm about things, that he opted to wait until "The Small Young Gentleman" woke up, which was two hours later and then we did the ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, It was soooo good to wake up whenever we wanted to but not exactly whenever as breakfast was available until 10:00 and it was 08:30 already. By the time we had jumped into the shower and got ourselves looking decent, it was 09:15. Not a lot of time really. Ah well! We had a really nice buffet breakfast which was full to the core. It consisted of cooked stuff like sausages and bacon (Yeah!), fried eggs, potatoes, boiled eggs, a huge variety of German breads and cold cuts, cheese, fruit and veg, cereal, help-yourself-hot-chocolate ( the children did! ), milk fruit juice, tea, coffee delivered to the table and cake. Chocolate and Marzipan cake. We had quite a few slices I can tell you! Today, we put on our ski suits and ... read more

Hi Family and Friends, I went to bed pretty late at about 01:30 and at 04:00, I was up again! Bleary eyed, I went through the motions of taking a bath, stuffing the last few things into our suitcases and making sandwiches for our train journey. I figured that if we left the house at 06:00, we would have more than enough time to get the 06:40 train at Hbf or the Main Central Train Station. I didn't reckon on the fact that we would miss the bus as we saw it merrily driving away....! "The Small Young Gentleman" found it all pretty amusing as after all, he had his own suitcase to roll around so all was well with the world. I, on the other hand, knew that it might be a problem as the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Thuringia February 7th 2008

Hi Friends and Family, As promised, a new journey is beginning yet again. "The Small Young Gentleman" and I are going to Oberhof in Thuringia, Germany for (hopefully) a spot of skiing and a means to which we can spend some quality time together. We’ll be leaving early on Friday morning and returning late on Sunday evening. Oberhof is a town in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district of Thuringia, Germany. It is a winter sports center and health resort. It has roughly 1,600 inhabitants (2005), but is visited by tenfold as many tourists every year. Situated directly on the Rennsteig - a classic among the long-distance hiking paths in Germany due to the marking of almost 168 kilometre in length - it is home to many famous sportsmen and women. The holiday region of Oberhof is a venue ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, I woke up at the ungodly hour of 09:00 ‘cos the coach was going to pick us all up at 10:30. My room mates were still sleeping so I staggered to the bathroom and had what can only be described as the shower of all showers. There was glitter and confetti strings in my hair, glitter on my cheeks and glitter goodness knows where else. All well and good in the throngs of a festive night, but in the harsh light of day looked distinctly pathetic! Breakfast was a buffet of Czech bread, ham, sausages and cheese which I went back and forth for, quite a few times. The meal was manageable but the tea was tepid and no matter how long I left the teabag to brew, the tea just didn’t ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, We arrived at the Main Central Station - Hlavni Nadrazi, a little after 09:00. Ann needed to wait for her girlfriend who was on another coach so she gave me some money to pay for their tickets, and then I set off. I bought a 24 hour ticket costing 80 Czech crowns (about €3) and then proceeded to go to “Jama - The Hollow ” which wasn’t opened. Jama is a Tex-Mex restaurant and also the restaurant where we were going to see in the New Year. It wasn’t opened until 11:00 so I went to the Post Office and sent off some New Year cards to Canada and the UK. I then proceeded to look for a booking office for the Black Light Theatre as I didn’t want to spend all ... read more
