Another Day!
On a frozen pond. Hi Friends and Family,
It was soooo good to wake up whenever we wanted to but not exactly whenever as breakfast was available until 10:00 and it was 08:30 already. By the time we had jumped into the shower and got ourselves looking decent, it was 09:15. Not a lot of time really.
Ah well!
We had a really nice buffet breakfast which was full to the core. It consisted of cooked stuff like sausages and bacon (Yeah!), fried eggs, potatoes, boiled eggs, a huge variety of German breads and cold cuts, cheese, fruit and veg, cereal, help-yourself-hot-chocolate ( the children did! ), milk fruit juice, tea, coffee delivered to the table and cake. Chocolate and Marzipan cake. We had quite a few slices I can tell you!
Today, we put on our ski suits and decided to check out what was out there. I still wanted "The Small Young Gentleman" to have fun in the snow. The ski school wasn’t going to happen for him as every ski school for children was closed until further notice, due to the fact that snow at lower levels just wasn’t enough and since I didn’t want to leave him
behind with “strangers”, I decided that we would spend the rest of the weekend having lots of “fun”!
We stuffed my bag with “refreshments” of fruit, chocolate, eggs, sandwiches and water and decided to go on a hike. It was such a glorious day. It was so hot and the sun glared so much that at one point we took off our hat, scarf and gloves and I felt as if I were in Milan with the huge amount of sunglass wearers that we saw!
We started our all-day hike by skating on a local pond nearby. We found a post-office and even a drug-store “Schlecker” - how nice - and so we stocked up with more liquids and proceeded on. We walked through the village and followed the signs. Our destination was to find the trail that would lead us to the Rennsteig forest which as I said in one of my earlier blogs, is a classic among the long-distance hiking paths in Germany and a paradise for cross-country skiers.
The hike took a couple of hours and it was just lovely to walk through the forest, on the snow or by sliding on the

In a German town. ice. We saw a couple of war monuments, a couple of hikers on skis and quite a few fellow hikers. We arrived at the Rennsteig Natural Park and Botanical Garden but unfortunately it was closed for the winter. What a shame! Never mind, the hike back was just as good as we even managed to make a snowman before it became too dark and hunger began to drive us back to the hotel.
Once we arrived at the hotel, we took advantage of the hotels facilities. We were quite wet and soggy and our feet were a terrible mess of mud, snow and slush. What was needed was warmth.
We had planned to go into a sauna unit which can be privately allocated for ones’ group. It is coin operated but we soon discovered that we didn’t have enough coins necessary and it would mean getting dressed again and going out to Reception so we called it a day in the sauna and just jumped into the swimming pool instead which had a spa and Jacuzzi.
Bliss.
Just Bliss.
By 18:00, it was time to get ready for dinner. We didn’t want to leave but
Where are we?
Lost in Translation.... the "The Small Young Gentleman" had plans for the evening so we had to!
Dinner was lovely as expected and the "The Small Young Gentleman" wolfed down his dinner because at 19:30, the children’s’ cinema was going to put on the very excellent “Ratatouille”. We had already seen the original version months before, but it was amazing how many people wanted to see it and by people, I mean adults! The cinema was stuffed with kids on cushions and parents on the floor or leaning on the window-sill and doorway. It’s a very popular film. I even watched 45 minutes of it myself before I scooted off to take advantage of some “me” time to read a book.
By bedtime, we were both exhausted but full of good fresh air.
Ta-ra!
