Hi Friends and Family, Today, we visited Hoa Lu (the capital under the 10th Dynasty) and went to Cuc Phong. Cuc Phong is Vietnam’s oldest national park where we did a very basic trek up to the caves to find evidence of pre-historic man! With torches, we climbed up the steep slippery hill. The caves were dark and interesting with traces of fossils and natural elements. The park is also a tropical rain forest which contains rare hardwoods and an amazing wildlife. We visited the Cuc Phuong Primate Rescue Centre which is sponsored by the Frankfurt Zoo in Germany. We were guided around various species of primates and met one of the German sponsors from an Animal Wildlife Organization. We were also guided around various species of primates and met one of the German staff members ... read more

Hi friends and Family, Meet up time is 07:15. Today, we’re going to Ninh Binh via train. We’re on a day train rather than a night train. I went to India in 2005 and the overnight train I took then was extremely uncomfortable. The Viet Nam Railways train is pretty alright. We were in the 1st class Sleeper carriages that have 4 Sleepers per compartment. We were in Compartment No. 9. We’re with Simon and Trevor. Provided are free bottles of water, duvets, sheets and a pillow. The beds had mattresses and each room had air Con, individual lights, a wooden attached table, and hooks. It was pretty comfortable. There was a mirror on the door, guards and constant railway staff plied and paraded the train, and the doors had internal security locks. We had a ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, Meet up time 07:00. Set off 08:00 Today, we set off in a convoy of 14 motorbikes and drivers. I picked a red motorbike ‘cos I liked the bright colour and the driver turned out to be Ngon, the Hue local guide and the Team Leader for the day! Ngon was funny, knowledgeable, and not bad looking. I was lucky to have him nearby ‘cos I also got private sessions while we were on the bikes! Ngon even got a little flirty, but I kept it all in perspective! We visited the stately Thien Mu Pagoda and the Museum of Fine Art. We learnt the history and philosophy behind Buddhism ands the symbols of honouring and worshipping the dead and or royalty. Yesterday, I enclosed a video of lots of carp fish ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, We had a very quick breakfast as kick off was 08:00. Our previous driver and bus had left us to go back to Saigon so our new bus was smaller and with our new purchases, a little bit more cramped! We were on our journey to Hue so we crossed the dramatic Hai Van Pass which is the only link between North and South Vietnam and a very modern road that twists and turns. We drove through the Marble Mountains so named 'cos of the marble that was derived from them and took many photos of China Beach which used to be a naval base. Danag is a wealthy area and we noticed that there was barely any litter to be found and the streets had green dustbins every couple of metres. ... read more

Good Morning People! Today, we took our time and again had a bit of a lie in and a lazy day. Ladies and Gents, today we did nought! Actually, my companion went swimming in the pool while I dangled my legs, drank orange juice, ate melons, and updated my diary. Hoi An closes early so its difficult to complete my blog at the moment. We lazed in the hotel pool just below our room, which is pretty cool. My companion has been in and out there since we've been here. The night before, we had booked our cookery class which became a private class for two. The name of our cookery school was the "Red Bridge Restaurant and Cookery School". We attempted to pick up my companion's shoes but they were not as we expected and ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, Today I decided not to go for breakfast. Firstly, I was still feeling a little unwell and secondly, I just couldn't be bothered, and wanted a lie in! My companion however DID go for breakfast and brought me back some French bread and ham! Today's plan was to shop 'till we drop, and we pretty much did that! We had tickets to go to the Old Town which is a World Heritage feature and thus protected. We had plans to go to 4 or 5 places but only managed to go to one place which was a famly chapel. For the rest of the day, we thought wandering along loosely would be more interesting. We flitted in and out of various tailoring shops and finally settled on one. It was a shop ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, Breakfast was a wonderful buffet of noodles, French bread, toast, fried or scrambled eggs, local delicacies, 100 day old eggs, rice and various stews and sauces, salted herring in tomato sauce, a variety of pates and jams, melon, banana, dragon fruit which is a black and white dotted fruit on the inside and a bright purple on the outside, pineapple and lots of yummy cake. Tea / coffee, orange, lemon, strawberry and pinapple juices. We went back and forth a few times! Today was a long but scenic drive to Hoi An. We sat on the front seat of the bus this time, so we could experience the drive more fully! Today was enormously humid and all day I felt hot, bothered and in a faint. Even getting out of our bus ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, Again, we had a lovely breakfast and then continued our journey. we were on our way to a small town called Quy Nhon. We travelled via scenic sections of Highway 1 - a new intersection - and saw huge granite cliffs which fell away into the blue of the South China Sea. We stopped over at a beautiful beach that was lone of people except us and a local woman selling live shell-fish. It was wonderful to just roll up our trousers, take off our shoes and walk into the sea. We also saw a lot of fishing vilages. My companion had seen lots of green bottles of liquid for sale at almost every stall we passed, and wondered if it was some sort of rice wine. It wasn't. It was petrol! ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, Breakfast was a huge buffet of bread, jams, noodles, spicy meat balls, bacon (Yum), pate, ham, a very strange sort of boiled egg, fried eggs, tea / coffee, pineapple, melon, cake and various juices - orange, lemon and pineapple. Today, we went on a boat trip to the sea amongst the islands. Our boat was a typical snorkelling boat with wooden seats that was later converted to a long dinning table. We did have life jackets on board but fishermen believe that life-jackets bring bad luck! There was a lot of jollification on the boat as we practised being Kate and Jack from "The Titanic" with the "I'm the King of the World" pose! The sea was the best I've seen yet. Emeraled green and lovely with a wonderful smell. We sailed for ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, Meet up time 8:00 am Today, we left the Golf 1 Hotel. The hotel itself was pretty sleek. The rooms were large and we had a double bed AND a single bed with a very nice en-suite bathroom. Complimentary water (so very important), cable and satellite TV and very nice looking professional staff. I gather that the more the customers use the facilities, the prettier the girls who front Reception are! Today, we checked out of the hotel and proceeded to go to Nha Trang via the Ngoan Muc Pass. The Ngoan Muc means “pleasing to the eye” and with breathtaking views we made our way down the mountain. Again, a few hairy moments on the road and an ear-blocking time for me due to the air pressure. For a few hours ... read more
