Last day, didn’t sleep that well, disappointed it is over already, can’t believe it went so quickly. Christine is packing and I need to go and buy a bigger bag and ring Eulong. Took Harry and Corry, got them some breakfast and the extra bag. Got onto Eulong and arranged for him to pick us up at 12.00. Isabella and Liam were awake, so we went down for second shift breakfast, they had coconut sticky rice and fruit shakes. Eulong, Oi and their driver picked us up, took us for lunch and back to their shop where they spoiled the kids. Great lunch and really nice to see them. They drove us to the airport, there in good time and no hassles. Although we left Bangkok early last time, it has grown us this time. In ... read more

We got up early to do a long boat tour. Walked down to the pier and found one for 1800 Baht for 2 hours. It was interesting going through the canals, we went through Bangkok Noi and Bangkok Yai. He asked if we wanted to go to the snake farm, this is something that Corry had really wanted to do, so we said yes, only to find this was the wrong one. This was a private zoo devoted to animal cruelty and skimming money from tourists. Harry was ok to start with and quite enjoying it, but when he saw the bears he burst into tears, overcome at how sad they looked. The kids spent the rest of the trip talking about how they could free the animals, by whatever means. We went and got breakfast/lunch, ... read more

Bangkok was very hot again. We got up late and decided to get back on bus 53 and go to Chinatown. We had Dim Sum and a wander, but so hot it was uncomfortable. We then went to Jim Thompson House, this was very interesting and no hard sell. They do tours of the house and garden, the house was built from six old teak houses. As we wandered I wash wishing we had bought some of the antiques we saw in Luang Prabang, as we were seeing such similar pieces in here. So hard to know what to buy when you are travelling. From here we walked to MBK which is a cross between a market and a department store, but airconditioned. The kids loved it, and the boys could get some PSP Games. It ... read more

We had decided to get off at Lopburi and have a look around. The train was so cold it was hard to sleep. I couldn't believe they would have it so cold, you got a cotton blanket, but that wasn't enough. The kids had jumpers, but I haven't needed anything more than a shirt, so was very uncomfortable. We do like getting off the train as the city wakes up. It is a great way to learn about what a city is like. Lopburi is famous for its monkeys, and it didn't take too long to get an introduction. They were everywhere. We wandered through town, and look around, not the nicest of cities, and by 9.00 it was hot. We continued our way around and then went back to the train station. We had decided ... read more

It's time to leave Baan Nam Ping. We have enjoyed our stay here, and Chiang Mai. We have all become fond of Eddie at the resort, particularly Harry who is always at his side. We checked out at 12.00 and went to the train station. Unfortunately no sleepers on the 9.00 train, so we book sitting up (still can’t work out ticket pricing, the more popular the route, the higher the price I think) and we head into town to the markets. They close one of the main streets at 4.00 for the walking street market, so we did a smaller one first. Got some lunch, kids had noodles (it's taken Corry 4 weeks to try the noodles) and I had Pad Krapow Gai, Chili chicken stir fry, and Christine and Harry had an omelet and ... read more

Months ago Liam found Flight of the Gibbons, and this is the one thing he really wanted to do, so today is the day. They picked us up from our accommodation in a really nice van, then drove us for about an hour. We arrived and could not believe the number of vans and people. These guys must make a fortune. Well, it appeared to be a complete shambles, no one seems to know what they are doing and no one seems to be in charge. Great, we are swinging 50 metres above ground through the trees like gibbons with a bunch of guys that cant even get organised on the ground. They fed us, a good red curry and stir fried vegetable, then more utter disorganisation, then fitted with harnesses and back in the van. ... read more

It is not possible to have a traditional Xmas whilst away, so we wont even try. Some cities in Asia seem to be very Christmassy, Kuala Lumpur and Khon Kaen in particular, really strange really. Then there are the mixed up religions, such as Christmas music in the resort on Xmas Eve, with the monks chanting across the river at the temple, or my favourite in Central Market in Kuala Lumpur with the Christmas Carols playing, and the Muslim Woman selling Buddha statues. Harry was up early, Isabella and Liam had made a tree from fern fronds, and Santa had found us. The kids opened their presents and we wandered down to breakfast, more of the same xmas music playing. The kids played with presents for a while, then went for a swim. After catching up ... read more

We decided to have a quiet morning, after breakfast the kids went swimming. The resort has bikes, so around midday we went for a ride to Ban Tawai, about 9 km away, and looked at handicraft stores. There are about 600 on the one site. There is also manufacturing in the area, and looked at some furniture. The ride home slowed down when Corry got a puncture. We stopped in the town near the resort to get some dinner. They have all sorts of take home things, from grills to curry's and rice. Only one trader sells rice, someone else only curries etc. Once we got everything the owner of the resort came, she was concerned as it was dusk, so the bikes went into the back of the Hilux, and off we went. They don't ... read more

The kids went for a swim after breakfast, I think they needed to after cereals and cooked breakfast. We relaxed for a while making the most of the environment we are in. At midday we arranged transport into the city. The only downside of where we are staying is the cost of getting to and from the city (and the fact no-one knows where it is). We were dropped at one of the temples in the old city, and went through it and then progressed around the city. The temples are very old, a number around 600 years, and all different, one was teak, another had a huge Stupa. There was Monk Chat at one temple, where you could sit and have a chat with the Monks. This improves their English, and is a nice insight ... read more

We left Chiang Rai reasonably early, the bus station just around the corner from where we were staying. Went to buy the tickets, and told the next bus at 1.00pm. After some discussion we discovered most buses leave from the new bus station. We caught a sangthaew out there and got on a 10.00am bus. The trip was very scenic, through the mountains (Christine was saying I think I can, I think I can up the hills as the bus went to the lowest gears and crawled up), and one stop along the way. It took about 3 1/2 hours to get to Chiang Mai. In Chiang Mai we needed a sangthaew to get out to our accommodation. We are staying out of the city in a resort www.baannamping.com and amongst six or so drivers they ... read more
