We only stopped in the 3 ports for about 8 hours a day but it did give a taste and sound of Scotland. The brogue was titillating especially on the hearty bearded Viking males. Shetlandwas the best with the countryside tour: the ponies, the seals, the oyster catchers, and the sheep everywhere you looked. As we passed fields it was hard to distinguish whether the fields were dotted with hundreds of sheep or rocks. Sheep it was. Deb got to visit Jamieson's wool shop and she was greeted with hugs, smiles and photos. She was in wool heaven - must be like my fabric fetish as a quilter. Kirkwall was another stone city - good masonry work available in Scotland. Interesting Earl's Palace and quaint shops on narrow cobbled streets but alas no time to shop. ... read more

Bodo - nice little town - went to a concert in a church with an impressive organ! Bronnoysund - another small town made up of many islands. Nice scenery. Went past one of the featured landmarks (the old firehall) 4 times. Not a lot of things to do in town unless you wanted to go to a shopping mall. Should have chosen one of the optional ($) tours. Alesund Beautiful art Deco facades and the few river inlets reminded us of Venice. After the hilltop tour for photo op four of us walked around the town so we could get more photos and I could sketch. Bought a pair of pants in a "salg" shop (I know the word SALE in most languages). Back on the ship with 30 minutes to spare before sailing time I ... read more

Honningsvag Bundled up this morning for our tour to Nordkapp. Technically not the most northern spot in Europe but the little peninsula that sticks out a few metres more does not have the advantage of being up on the windswept plateau. We did pass herds of reindeer on the way and stopped at a Sami village for the souvenir bit and photo op of a really gorgeous guy working there. I think it's on my camera and not the tablet so you may not get to see him. Very cold and looking out to sea I know I would never have been a groupie with any of those polar explorers. The very thought of heading into ice water on a ship to wherever sends chills down my spine. Listening to the guides tell what life is ... read more

Spectacular scenery every place we've been. Geiranger Fjord Amazing waterfalls as we headed into the fjord. Every few seconds there was another photo op. I was up on the top deck for a long time but then when we came to the 7 sisters waterfalls I raced down to our room to wake up sleeping Ross and have him see it. He moaned that he could see them from the bed via the mirror. I stood on our balcony snapping away. After docking we took the 11 hairpin turns up to Eagles Bend and had a great view of the fjord, the ship, and the falls. Later Deb, Ross and I walked back to the village following a path down a rushing river and back to the ship. Kristiansund Our tour took us along the Atlantic ... read more

Just a wee bit behind in my blogging so I’ll use paragraph headings so I can stay organized. To OLE BULL The flight from Toronto to Copenhagen was fine… I dozed just before landing. Saw a few good movies and watched the airplane tracking program on the screen (thought it would put me to sleep but no I just kept tracking the numbers to destination and so on). Connection to Bergen was quick and Ross and I and our luggage arrived in Bergen at 1:10 pm. Found our hotel after one error (an optical surgeon’s waiting room). Then we went out and got some cereal, milk and fruit (Norway is expensive –wow) since we had a kitchenette. Next a short 5 hour nap which mucked up the time change even more. Dinner across the street and watched ... read more

Two weeks ago I got keen and thought I'd condition my feet to the hiking boots I wore on the coast to coast hike. I put them on and sat on the recliner for 2 hours - boots were fine. Then 4 days later I put them on while I was quilting up on the third floor so the boots went up and down about 20 flights. Good to go. Since then I haven't touched them except to pack them in Ross' bag. The other get ready part of our trip was Ross checking our accommodation details for the hike section of this trip. We had booked B&B's through various methods back in the fall along with our travelling companions L&I. I usually pooh-pooh him wasting time doing these checks but thank goodness he did. Cabin seemed small on arrival but good storage. The boat is compact but comfortable with a nice dining room and a great Sundeck. We have visited many villages and temples in several towns such as Kampong Cham, Kampong Trolach, Phnom Penh (3 nights docked here), Tan chau, Sa Dec and Cai Be. All have their charms except Phnom Penh. We had several excursions there but it is probably the only place I would not return to for many years. A real discrepancy between haves and have-nots and no apparent effort by the Cambodian government to improve the situation. So far this trip our transportation methods have included: plane, buses, electric golf cart type vehicles, sampans, rickshaws, cyclos, riverboat, bicycle, kayak, tuk tuk, and some even did elephant. My favourite is tuk tuk. They go anywhere and ... read more

Flight to Siem Reap was easy but a little late. Arrived at the Sofitel Angkor Wat in the dark so did not appreciate the beauty of the resort until morning. As soon as we finished our buffet dinner (everything you could want and artistically presented as well) we were entertained by Aspara dancers. Bed - early as always here in Asia. {I am travelling in the bus right now headed to our ship and just before our rest stop we were in beautiful sunshine and right now it's pouring rain} the other amazing thing about this bus is that I can communicate this way while travelling through a country that has very little as you can see from the photos. They do love their beautiful things though - flowers, silks and women. Up at 7 for ... read more

We mastered walking across the streets. Once you see a 3 Metre break among the buses, scooters and bikes you just walk straight ahead in a steady pace. Works best when there's someone bigger and taller than you or an elderly Vietnamese person leading the way. We saw typical tourist spots provided by Viking: Ho chi Minh mausoleum, palace and regular living quarters, the Temple of Learning, and Museum of Vietnamese ethnology (good gift shop). The rest of the time the 4 of us wader ed through the old town and around the lake taking a thousand pictures of people carrying outrageous amounts of things on scooters, people squatting on tiny stools having lunch, interesting items to sell, people welding, sewing, painting, building right on the sidewalk. In fact sidewalks were either scooter parking lots, food ... read more

Flight to Hanoi was uneventful. Arrived on time, not bad through customs and our guide was there to get us to the Sofitel Metropole. We had been told we were upgraded and the way the guide was extolling his abilities to get us the upgrade had me very suspicious. We had been told earlier that the old wing was the more characteristical and historical wing. On the way Ng was saying it was better than the new wing which was just too modern and no atmosphere. On check-in we discovered we were really in the new. However it was Le Club floor where you had a perosnal butler to assist you, free cocktails, free canapes, etc. practically all day. The room was fantastic. Took off walking through the old town and saw amazing ways of doing ... read more
