We arrived in Manchester last night (Wed) around 5:30 pm and then walked all around downtown. Today we got up at 9 and did much the same. Only missed one turn trying to get to the train station to validate our ticket for Friday. We're blaming the error on the rain that was pouring down and the fact that as we pondered which way to turn we were actually directly beneath the sign and therefore could not see it. That only cost us four blocks. By noon it was hot and sunny so we took our stuff back to the hotel and left our purchases. We are down to a reality check now. When my husband and I began planning this trip a year ago I thought a walk across England would be quite nice, just a lovely stroll. We chose the leisure pace and it was fun to pick the various B&B's where we'll be staying. Ross has been reading guide books and studying maps all year long. I was waiting until closer to the time of departure. Mistake. On closer examination I see that what I thought were elevations of 500 or 600 feet are really meters. A little different from the Stanley Park hike and UBC walks I've been leisurely doing. Now I am sitting in the boarding area and the families are boarding and we could be next.
